Wintery mix evident at Merritts Live Cam (1650m)
Exactly 3mm rain in Melbourne East Suburbs in my guage.
Differently abled snow on the basin cam lens shield, maybe it's heated?
I observe a couple of Yetis at thredbo...
High Noon ?
Id say thats Sergeant Stoke!
Pleasantly surprised to see the snow so early and it looks like the temps are dropping in Western Vic so hoping for a better than expected result. Does anyone know why Mt William AWS is out of action?
Steady rain at the high perch and getting cooler
They might get Summit open after all at Hotham, looking at more snowfall in the next few hours on the radar.
SWW updated to only alpine areas.
Perisher is definitely filling in. It's wet. But it's sticking to the ground at Front Valley Level.
If you look at the right hand side. Grass is disappearing.
Approx 1800m, if I am not mistaken?
Pretty spot on 1800m.
they had a fair bit of man made on Summit. with a bit of fresh top and and some creative pushing around they might be able to get it spinning.... not that there's any point at all to it...
Steady snow on the High Noon live cam. Looks set in for the day now.
Perisher Weather Station at 1730m is headed towards zero. Sitting about 1 Deg. If it goes below. Could be a reasonable event for the resort.
flakes falling down to bottom of Slalon/Snake Gully at Hotham. Not settling.
Macquarie news network just told me it’s not snowing.
I observe Macquarie news network isn’t a reliable source for this kind of information.
Just under BC terminal filling in nicely since 9:30am
There’s snow starting to show at the middle of excellerator which is a good sign
Definitely settling and sticking at Mid Station
Still well above zero, 1Deg at Perisher, 1730m. Nearly 10mm in the can since 7am. It's wet. But it's great base builder.
Just arrived in jindy, vis is poor up about the peaks, windy and cold
I observe winds have been stronger (maybe ~10 knots stronger) than progged this morning, which is why we're seeing snow sub-1600m IMO.
45 knots @ ~700m, and 35 knots @ ~1450m has aiding the cooling.
Observed 10AM this morning:
GFS Prog (note the wind speeds of 30-32 knots down the RH axis @900mb/800m ASL).
Here is my 2 cents on today......
8:30 rain turns to sleet and snow at PV. Then continues as heavy wet snow all morning.
Mt P early on below pic:
A few runs on Front Valley which is holding up well but it’s a slow ski run after 10:30 am.
10:30. WIN TV interviews @Normo and @robbo mcs - presumably for a quick weather bite on tonight’s news.
By noon the grass is starting to hold heavy wet snow and some is settling on the heath.
Quick run up past Spencer’s and it’s still hammering in. @skifree obviously it needs a lot more before any XC can be considered. See below trail between PV and CP:
But it is starting to stick around the rock in some areas:
Smiggin Holes was getting sleet and some wet snow but to warm and was melting. Hopefully that changes this evening.
Next 72 hours should be interesting....
Great report SMSkier. Thanks for sharing. Feel like I am there. well, almost....
Great report SMS.
Wow ........ Really starting to fill in at 1800m on Perisher FV.
9:30am Vs 1:30pm
Wax the phat ones
Just to show how important the resort elevation is for this system. This is right now Thredbo High Noon 1800 metres where accumulation is happening. Vs Merrits 1665 metres where it's just very wet.
I observe that there is precipitation in the nsw snowy mtns but the radar is not showing it . Any ideas on why?
Radar is never good at showing precipitation in the mountains.
The presence of mountains within the range of the radar can block part or whole of the radar beam, thus significantly reducing the echo intensity from rain on the other side of the mountains. This is considered "ground clutter" and can also be produced by buildings and trees. Occasionally birds, planes, ships and even a dense enough swarm of insects can be detected by weather radar. This is even more common with Doppler radars due to their higher sensitivity.
Base building stuff.
Looks moist. Rain to Smiggins, turning to sleety rain above the Smiggins entry.
Yuck! Just need that temperature to drop a little more.
Drizzly, misty 9 degrees here in emerald. Has been one very soggy day, 15mm in the gauge.
Panning out pretty much as expected, with accumulations 100-200m below FL.
Effing wild in Jindy now.
Low altitude Lee wave... Looks like fractus towards the hills.
Davenport circa 1700m. Looks plenty windy.
Shame it didn't Astro. Not for want of crossed fingers, legs and everything else from most of the forum members I can guess.
Was never supposed to snow until 4pm....
The way that temperature graph dropped this morning - it was such a tease . . . . and then flat lined . . . . . just above zero!
Looks like a bit settled higher up - Bluecow cam gone from grass to white. Mount P you can see the snow line half way up. From what I was expecting reading on here that seems none too bad with more to come lower down tonight?
Looked like a flash of lightning on the High Noon Live cam. Anyone down there hearing any rumbles?
Merits cam looks like there is snow settling now .
