Hoping to get over to Mawson's Hut this weekend, heading from either Schlink Hilton or Schlink Pass via the Kerries.

Have recently walked from Schlink Pass to Tin Hut via Gungarten (in March), and also skied to Mawson's from Valentine's (last Sept).

Anyway, weekend is meant to be sunny with temps between -1c and 8c (still pretty cold!) and there doesn't appear to be snow forecast between now and Saturday morning.

My question is this, do people think crampons or snow shoes will be necessary this weekend? How icy does it get on the Kerries?

Hard to know. I'd be surprised if there was much snow depth or any boilerplate on the very top. The wind forecast is for 30kph northerlies.

I've tried both and find snowshoes to be more versatile in a range of conditions but a bit heavier. If it's not boilerplate but slush between the tussocks you might not need either, just gaiters.

Thanks, trip was successful!

Left Guthega PS on Saturday at 8.20am - went via aqueduct trail - got to Schlink Hut at midday and stopped for lunch - then headed up the Kerries about 12.45 - the snow was deep enough in some sections near the high point of the ridge to make it a real slog for a good hour (post-holing / swapping leader for maybe 1km or so - exhausting) - got into Mawson's about 4.45pm. Long day!

On Sunday we headed back via Valentine's river making it a kind of loop back to Schlink road - made it back to the car about 4.35pm. Another long day but easier walking.

Glad to hear about the deep snow, thanks for reporting back.

Some photos - also brand new sign at Schlink Pass.
