Is there much in the way of kid stuff to do at Thredbo?

(ages 4 and 6)

Perisher has its kids club and ski lessons, plus their toboggan section, does thredbo have anything equivalent?

Thanks

Lots more to do at Thredbo for the kids.

Both have ski schools for the kids. I think Thredbo does that part a lot better than PB, at least based on the reaction of our daughter to having been in both. If you're there midweek they also have crazy hat day and a flare run (with battery-powered flares, of course) for the kids.

At Thredbo you can feed the ducks, take them to the playground, watch them put the chairs away for the night on Kosi express or gunbarrel, ride on the big red bus (or the little white one), use the swimming pool or the climbing wall, play with the metal animals and generally hang out in the village.

We stopped going to Perisher because kids plus luggage plus skitube on a busy day is really no fun at all when you can drive almost to your door in Thredbo.

You just can't compare the 2 from a kids perspective.

My 6yo visits Perisher, she has only ever had it in small doses and even still says the only good thing there is tube town.

Many people raise families in Thredbo, impossible to do in P. even if it was allowed.

Liesure Center!!!!!! pool, mission inflatable, water slide.

Toboggan slide - not snow, a metal track for some time the longest in Aust.

Lots of activities to share with the kids and lots of other kids for them to play with.

Wildlife, some tame.

Thredbo is great for the kids on non-ski days. The AIS pool/waterslide/inflatable course is a huge bonus - kids will happily spend hours in there. Thredboland€ animals, real animals (wombats crusing around Friday Flat and the village green/river), sealed roads (instead of slush covered dirt), plus family friendly bars and restaurants make it a much better option than Perisher when the weathers crap.

very interesting!

Metal animals?

Is jindebyne the best place to stay for thredbo? (Other than thredbo itself which would be prohibitively expensive)

There is a pair of metal birds (emus I think?) which my kids like to sit on outside the pizza shop and a metal wombat in the village square. Probably a few others as well...

Jindabyne is an ok place to stay for Thredbo, but remember on a good day it's half an hour down the hill and if you're lucky enough to get a big dump of fresh snow as we did on arrival a few years ago it could be a 3 hour trip.

I'd add that often kids (and on occasion partners) don't want to ski all day and would rather chill out in the lodge, especially if it's snowing or windy as they get cold more easily than adults. If you're staying off-snow and only have one car for the family then you get to sit in a motel room reading a book. If you're on-snow then the adults can still take it in turns to go out and slide. Also if you're not in the village you miss out on the whole on-snow experience. Slogging up and down the hill every day is a hassle.

Check out this thread for ideas on how to save money including on accommodation.

The added expense of staying in Thredbo is SO WORTH IT!!!!

40km uphill then 40km back at inflated fuel prices is one offset.
The grief of sitting in damp or wet and no doubt smelly clothing, in a car at the end of the day Vs being caught in a bar still in your ski gear (or freshly groomed & showered) - it's a choice...

Burnt Downs, Blue Mtns, 1100M.
If you get a Thredbo Card and stay at the Alpine Hotel you get 15% of the accomodation as well as lower priced lift tickets.
Its a good deal IMO, its what we do, smack bang in town and just a walk across the bridge to Valley Terminal
Dinner at the pub isn't bad and not too exy either for a family.

Second that. Once you've done it once you won't stay at Jindy ever again.

Spelling and punctuation are the difference between helping your Uncle Jack off a horse and helping your uncle jack off a horse.

Camping about 8k out of town costs $0 per night. Recently saw a family there with kids approx 6 yrs, 4 years and 6 months! In a caravan though.
5 star accom there

A friend of mine camped out near Thredbo a couple of seasons ago. Not sure where as I'm not exactly into snow camping, but it was a long stagger home at midnight. One windy night they arrived to find their tent half blown away and snow right through all their stuff.

Probably not the ideal way to get the kids enthused for the snow...
