Is there anywhere else apart from Furano where kids under 12 ski for free? Is Furano a good place for a first time ski experience for children? Where would you go if you had two children (boys) aged 13 and 10. The 10 year old is really active and physical I think he will pick up skiing easily. Other 13 year old...not so much!
our 10 year old does a bi lingual program at school so we would like somewhere that isn't completely westernised.

All the Prince resorts have kids under 13 ski free.

There's also a number of resorts in Japan where the kids lift ticket is very cheap, often around 1000 yen. Tomamu has super cheap season pass deals for a family. Our 4 season passes (2 adults + 2 kids) cost us around $650 earlier this year, which includes unlimited skiing at three Japanese resorts, discounts at others, a week at Cardrona NZ plus a host of other savings. https://www.snowtomamu.jp/winter/en/ski/ticket/season.php

We did the Furano/Tomamu double earlier this year with our two kids (9 and 12yrs).

We were in Minikami last year and Okutone had free skiing for 12 years and under.
Even if skiing isn't free, most Japanese resorts have very cheap skiing for kids. For instance Nozawa is about 2200 yen. Moiwa at Niseko is 700 yen!
