Interesting article in the local paper this week. ' A Labor government would review "the failed privatisation" of the Mt Baw Baw resort in the wake of a decision to close the parks office and restaurant four days a week, says the ALP candidate for Narracan, Kate Marten' The article continues with comments from the Belgravia appointed resort manager mainly about 'consolidating services' and 'putting resources where they're most useful' Obviously something has come to the attention of Ms Marten in order for her to respond in such a manner!

Very interesting! Waiting (patiently) for someone to post a copy of said article. Perhaps someone at Kelly's café knows something?

Thanks Currawong, sounds too technical for me! Hopefully some other bright spark can do what you have suggested, otherwise I have a scanned copy which I could email out if there was a private and secure way of doing so via this thread?

FYI, as published in the West Gippsland Trader, Thurs Nov 27: Labor proposes Baw Baw review

A Labor government would review the “failed privatisation” of the Mt Baw Baw Resort in the wake of a decision to close the parks office and restaurant four days a week says the ALP candidate for Narracan, Kate Marten.
Belgravia Leisure, which the State Government appointed to operate the resort in April, has confirmed the resort office and restaurant will only open Friday to Monday outside the ski season.
Ms Marten said the winding back of operating days was clear evidence that the resort was in financial trouble.
“The cost of privatisation through management fees and supervising the contract has not left enough money to pay suppliers or run the resort.”
Resort manager Alex Flint said Ms Marten’s information was inaccurate. “It’s frustrating because we’ve worked really hard to position the resort.
“We are trying to drive attendance and occupancy. The vast majority of people who stay do so at weekends.
“The number of people coming up midweek wasn’t sufficient to have staff standing around making a couple of coffees.
“The idea is to consolidate services and to employ people more usefully on maintenance and other tasks.
Apart from the restaurant, all the facilities would be open during the week and people could use the trails and other facilities and stay in the lodges, he said.
“There will be a duty manager and people on site to assist guests in an emergency.”
He said the resort was encouraging visitors to visit from Friday to Sunday when facilities will be open from 8am-8pm.
Ms Marten also claimed resort staff were being harassed by suppliers who had not been paid, and that local positions had been lost as functions were moved to Belgravia’s head office, and as the new resort managers turned their back on the “green season”.
Mr Flint said a check of the resort accounts showed all creditors had been paid.
He said the number of staff employed had “decreased slightly” as some functions, such as human resources, were transferred to Belgravia Leisure’s head office in Bayswater.
Far from cutting back on green season events, the resort was ramping up, with new attractions such as alpine fitness retreats, he said.
“The only events were not running on the mountain are those that didn’t make any money.
“We’re growing, were just trying to make sure were putting the resources where they’re most useful.”
A record white season delivered the new operators a dream start. The resort recorded 94,000 skier days this season, a 54 per cent rise on the 61,000 recorded last year and 25 per cent up on the 75,000 recorded in 2012.
Mr Flint rejected Ms Martens claim that several lodge owners had been left in limbo while they waited for their leases on the mountain to be renegotiated.
“We’ve put systems in place to process leases a lot earlier but it is dependent on certain processes happening in government.”
He said he had met with ski lodge owners last weekend and they were happy with the process and level of communication.

Thanks for posting, Serenity. Clearly there are 2 sides to the story and perhaps more that is not in the public domain yet. You'd think they would have to be happy with 94,000 skier days but perhaps there are other measures of "success".

I only hope they don't set up another money wasting, snouts in the trough, Alpine Resorts Commission which, from memory only drove up costs for the resorts and provided a few privileged people with endless overseas "fact finding" trips !

Thanks also Serenity for those stats. Great result for the 2014 white season!

Hi all. In yesterdays Warragul Gazette, the heading reads "Baw Baw resort up for review". Will have the actual article posted soon. In short, Lisa Neville, the Environment minister, is seeking advice from DELWP (formerly DEPI) re changed operating hours and the current management situation. Over the coming months, she will work with all stakeholders to find a long-term management solution. Interesting times no doubt.

Baw Baw Resort up for review

The new Labor State Government will review the management of the Mt Baw Baw Resort in light of reduced operating hours.

Environment Minister Lisa Neville told the Gazette she was concerned about arrangements made by the previous Liberal Government, which last April appointed Belgravia Leisure to operate the resort.

In November, Belgravia Leisure said the resort office and restaurant would close four days a week outside the ski season.

Before the election. The ALP candidate for Narracan, Kate Marten, told the Gazette a Labor government would review “the failed privatisation” of the resort.

Ms Neville said she had asked the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, which is responsible for overseeing Victoria’s alpine resorts, to provide advice regarding the reduction of opening hours and current management situation.

“Over the coming months I will work with all stakeholders to find a solution for long-term management of the resort”

The Gazette asked resort manager Alex Flint for comment but he did not respond by deadline.

In November, he defended the cut in operating hours, saying most people visited Mt Baw Baw at weekends.

“The number of people coming up midweek wasn’t sufficient to have staff standing around making a couple of coffees.

“The idea is to consolidate services and to employ people more usefully on maintenance and other tasks”

Apart from the restaurant, all the facilities would be open during the week and people could use the trails and other facilities, and stay in the lodges, he said.

“There will be a duty manager and people on site to assist guests in an emergency”.

He said the resort was encouraging visitors to visit from Friday to Sunday, when facilities would be open from 8am-8pm.

    interesting topic....yet another review.

Here are some very simple solutions to helping baw baw out of its current situation.

    1. Seal South Face Road to improve access to the resort
    2. bring mains power connected to the grid to the resort. I mean how many people would pay nearly $1 per kwh for power?
    3. Invest in the infrastructure of the resort like:
    * a chairlift on the summit t-bar summit for all year round access and increased movement in winter
    * remove the rediculous terrain park on tank hill and return it to a beginner hill so that hut run can run full pace instead of 50% speed for beginners
    * with the benefit of mains power, increase the snow making
    * put a toilet down in the bowl during winter. Seriously as a parent with young kids no toilet down there is a problem and I am sure they could get a corporate donor from coates etc that could spare a decent tiolet facility for 10 weeks.

In part I agree with privitising the operations but think they errer in the selection of the contractor. Why not give a grollo or someone similar the rights for a decent term (5-10 years) that can run a big resort, hell you might even get hand me down snow making equipment or a lift that could increase capacity further.

Every other resort has significant corporate backing, maybe i am too logical but surely with the right people marketing and branding the resort a corporate backer could be found?
