Following our trip to Canada earlier this year, I thought it might be a good time to return to Japan where we ventured for the first time in January 2016 (one of the worst snow seasons on record, so here’s hoping for an improvement on that). A mix of sightseeing and skiing, after a short stopover in Singapore. Just a few bags in tow ....

Now I just have to survive the overnight flight to Singapore after a very stressful few days. Whose idea was it to host Christmas lunch then fly out the same day? Oh, hang on ....

I deliberately haven’t been checking the Japan weather thread this past week! Looking forward to trudging around Kanazawa in the snow

    Kanazawa is a great town.
    The buses work really well.
The gardens in snow will look epic

Best time to see them. Apart from being the best gardens in Japan IMHO they are awesome in snow.

Unless there is a metre of snow like last winter and Kenrokuen gets buried. Hopefully there won't be that much again.

Dammit, why can’t I sleep on planes? Never mind we had perhaps 3hours between dinner at 2am and breakfast at 5.00 to grab a few winks. On the plus side, I got a chance to browse some good music on the flight and watch “The Queen”. Very impressed with Singapore Airlines - they leave Air Canada for dead (not hard). We have just left our ski bags at the rather expensive luggage storage facility at Changi airport ($18 per bag per 24 hours x 3 ...) ready for a couple of days in the heat.

There is Komatsu Airport very near the Komatsu tractor factory. Komatsu was named Komatsu because the company was founded in Komatsu city. Hitachi is the same, I mean, Hitachi was named Hitachi because Hitachi was founded in Hitachi city, Ibaraki Prefecture. Hitachi also produce tractors, and Komatsu and Hitachi are rivals. Ah, sorry for posting something off topic, but some of my family / relatives have been working for Hitachi, so I felt like mentioning Hitachi:p

By the way, Komatsu Airport is the closest airport to Kanazawa city. It used to have only domestic flights but they started having some international flights in recent years and they'll newly have international flights between Hong Kong as well. Most people will use Narita or Kansai, not Komatsu Airport, though even if they are interested in visiting Kanazawa.

We did that a few years back. We had to kick everyone out by 4, be at the airport by 6. Never again. But it did seem like a great idea at the time!

Well, our first day in Japan hasn’t exactly been a roaring success. Our flight out of Singapore was delayed by 45 minutes meaning a late arrival into Kansai airport. So by the time we reached the Taqubin counter at 10.37pm the damned thing was closed, as was pretty much everything else. This left us with 4 cases and 3 ski bags to cart around . After some difficulty I located the relevant bus into Osaka, bought the tickets, and then we had a very forgettable walk from Herbis Plaza to our hotel (about 700m, made longer by his Lordship decisively taking a wrong turn) with tired children and ski bags in tow. My bad back is not feeling fantastic right now. It’s now 1.20 and I’m going to bed! Hopefully we can Taqubin the darned ski bags off to Shiga Kogen from the hotel tomorrow. Yawn.

You have my sympathies. In similar circumstances I have found that a regime of Voltarin, rest, massage and Sake is of assistance. Hopefully your male aides will also now perform all required luggage labouring duties.

This cannot be underestimated, but you can send Takkyubin from pretty much any convenience(conbini) store.
So what you COULD have done, was arrive in Osaka, and BEFORE walking to your hotel, go into the conbini and send your bags from there.
OR. Arrive at the hotel and get them to send directly from the hotel.
You could do either of those this morning.

Thanks Sandy. The clerk on duty at our hotel last night/early this morning was exceptionally helpful and stated that they could certainly Taqubin the bags to Shiga Kogen. Oh well, nothing like a 12 minute walk dragging a 25kg double ski bag after a long flight :D

There are two days of the year that Himeji Castle is closed, we found out today - the 29th and 30th of December. Guess which days we are visiting Osaka? Undeterred, we navigated our way through the slightly intimidating Osaka Station to collect our JR Kansai area passes and headed off to Himeji, where we wandered around the outskirts of the castle in somewhat chilly conditions (5 degrees).

But the highlight for the children was the multiple sightings of some very disdainful-looking cats. Who needs history?

Edit: while waiting for our train back to Osaka, we heard that trains from Hiroshima had been delayed due to “heavy snow”. Hmm ...

Today, we once again navigated our way through Osaka Station (that place is very confusing, or maybe I’m just hopeless with directions) and made our way to Osaka Castle. Guess what? It’s shut :D. No matter - some lovely views of the (renovated) exterior.

A stay in Osaka would not be complete without visiting the very impressive Umeda Sky Building. One for the budding architect/engineer in my family (Mr 12).

Meanwhile I’ve lost count of the number of times Miss 15 has told Mr 12 that he is “so annoying”..... Gotta love family holidays :)

Im hiring a car for 24hrs after some days in Shiga Kogan, having a rest day going for a drive then spending the night in Myoko with friends before returning the car to Nagano, then heading to Hakaba for 5 days. Kanazawa is a fair drive, just one of my thoughts.
