Absolutely. And my children love skiing with my friend’s two. Having said that, I’m currently doing a few red and black runs while they amble back to Ichinose ;)

Thanks! She would never admit it, but she’s been having FUN tearing down the slopes and hanging with Miss 16.

Well, the clouds did part this afternoon treating us to some glorious views. The scenery around here is wonderful when you can see ....

We caught up with @elSpike and his family at Dairoku this evening, albeit with incredibly uncomfortable seating arrangements ....

Last day in Shiga Kogen tomorrow before we head to Nozawa Onsen. A distinct lack of enthusiasm for the bus options to the far end of the resort. Oh well .....

Looks like you'll get plenty of snow to village level at Nozawa later this week. Will be gorgeous.

We thought so too. And the Hotel Grand Phenix (sic) also seemed very swish (the toilets even had automatically opening lids when you entered the cubicle). Liked Okushiga Kogen; only problem would appear to be the distance from many restaurant/food outlets at night time.

don't see much Phenix gear around. I lashed out and bought two of their beanies in Thredbo, and I've only seen it in one store in Canada so far

Some great views today as we ventured slightly further afield, making it to Maruike, Hasuike, and Sun Valley. Fantastic first tracks at Ichinose Diamond on lightning fast groomers, then another delightfully fast run down the black at Ichinose Family. While the black runs here are not terrifying, they are still classified as blacks and I have been proud of my increased control and speed on them. I’ve also had fun tackling a few bumpy ungroomed black runs.

    The views from Terakoya:

We then enjoyed another pleasant run at Higashidateyama before trekking over to the Giant lift and heading off to Maruike. Arriving there at 11.00, we found untouched, perfectly groomed corduroy! More fast, carved runs .... On to Hasuike and Sun Valley (I think in that order), once again with barely another soul around. The views at Sun Valley were quite spectacular:

My friend’s 13yo (with not many days’ worth of skiing experience) managed the black run at Sun Valley, earning some fist bumps from my boys ...

Then, finally, we saw ... snow monkeys! A posse of them heading out of the trees trekking determinedly towards the nearby deserted hotels and restaurants, no doubt looking for food.

Sadly, this is our last day at Shiga Kogen. Would I come back? Hell, yeah! A great variety of terrain to explore (and hopefully next time I’ll persuade my lot to bus it to the far end of the valley ... or we’ll hire a car ). Pros: great views (when not snowing), fantastic intermediate terrain, good grooming, authentic Japanese resort, no lift queues, pretty much ski-in/ski-out, well-priced lift tickets (RFID, too), and friendly service. Cons: lack of advanced or off-piste terrain (not such an issue for us), limited activities for anyone in the family who doesn’t ski (or wants a rest day), relatively limited restaurants (Ichinose has been a good base - I recommend the Hotel Diamond shabu shabu and buffet, Dairoku, and the Teppa Bar in Chalet Shiga), lack of good coffee, and some slow double lifts. Some lifts also required an uncomfortable hike up to load on, while a few of the cat tracks had flat or uphill spots. I can’t imagine that would be very nice for snowboarders. Overall, however, Shiga Kogen gets an A from me .... Off to Nozawa Onsen tomorrow.

Nice one @Lady Penelope! How did you get back to Ichinose from Sun Valley? Skied all the way back or bus?

Shame that you couldn't make it to Yokoteyama and Kumanoyu. I suppose that's for next trip (or if you're bored at Nozawa )

    Nice TR.
I note from the pic of Sun Valley is that (externally at least) it looks pretty much the same as it did 30 years ago when I was there. This being a good or bad thing depending on point of view, especially compared to another resort which others have commented on in another thread today. It seems like Shiga is a resort I should go back to one day, although I have been pre-occupied in recent years with Tohoku. I also very much enjoyed the skiing at Terakoya, Shibutoga etc back in those days.

We walked across the road after skiing (against the rules :D but we followed a Japanese skier so felt justified!) through the tunnel to get there. Then over to Giant, Nishidateyama, and so on to ski back. Really recommend Restaurant 200 at the top of the Higashidateyama gondola - lovely spot, nice staff, reasonable coffee, and good selection of food (except for vegetarians ).

I’ll tell them that! We have a Chuo taxi booked for 9.30 taking us to Nozawa. Hoping to get some skiing in tomorrow; some of the children were a bit half hearted. This news might cheer up my tired powderhound ;)

Areas of the resort did look quite dated, and a few people I have spoken to on gondolas stated that the Prince Hotels (South in particular) were showing their age. Chalet Shiga (where we stayed) is showing it’s age too, but overall was very good value. However, I’ve been very impressed with Shiga as a whole. As long as you’re not expecting brand spanking new 5 star accommodation, you will be fine. I loved Shiga ....

Funny. It depends on the quality
We stayed in nagoya at a place that had a brand of futon that was mint
    was advertised as such
We all agreed. As good a sleep as we've ever had

I think futons get tired and old . Especially in snow country
Bunched up for 9 months at a time

I agree,I have doubled a few up and its ok. No where to sit is more a problem. Getting up off the floor all the time after days of skiing is hard on this old body..

Yes ... We’ve just had 6 nights on the floor on doubled-up futons (I never realised my hips were so bony!), with another 7 nights on tatami mats to come in Nozawa. Now whose idea was that ...... ?

Following this report in earnest as my husband and I are venturing to japan for the first time ever in a few weeks and will be hitting up nozawa , Madarao and Shiga so all your pics and insights are perfect for us! Can you tell me the price of that taxi from Shiga to nozawa? We have to go nozawa to Shiga Kogen and are currently looking at us to iiyama and then bus up to Shiga Kogen hotel. It’s cheap but we have to drag all our gear , if the taxi is not too bad it might be our choice as well. Cheers and look forward to your nozawa reports!

We did the bus to Iiyama and changed to another to Shiga Kogen last year. Didn't have to move our stuff far... I left my husband minding the bags in the train/bus station while I went shopping in the adjoining supermarket and stocked up on cheap snacks and drinks (take a spare bag).
Friends caught the direct bus which was three times the price and when we arrived at the Prince West there they were, waiting patiently in the foyer for the 3pm checkin!

Great trip report thanks. Seems like it has not changed much. There is some good off piste around shiga and the fact you can ‘tour’ around the resorts is a big plus. Surprising that it’s not more visited by hordes of aussies.

Scheduled to leave for Nozawa in about 40 minutes. It looks pretty unwelcoming out there with the wind, I have to say

    Eek.
Lucky you have a local experienced driver who knows the roads.

I’ve got a hire car from the airport, and back to the airport, for a month. Let’s hope Ullr-san dumps that kind of snow on the mountain not on the road when I’m driving after a two leg overnight journey in economy.

in conditions like this do not have your windscreen wipers running at high speed. Counterintuitive, I know, but if you have them on slow it will give then snow landing on the windscreen a chance to warm up and melt off. Running them on high speed will only freeze them up. I know....I leant the hard way in a snow storm last year.
