Hi.I have just returned from the VIC. ALPS. Lake Cobbler, Mt. Cobbler and Mt. Spec. were superb.
I must admit my curiosity about driving into Lake Cobbler was heightened by HONGOMANIA's and CHOKEN CHICKEN's white season 2018 BC XC trip reports which involved skiing the Cross Cut saw etc. and approaching the terrain by this route. So I easily persuaded the hiking obsessive Ms. C. to come with me. It was very quiet out there on a Mon. to Wed. jaunt.

On arrival at the Lake on Monday we walked and climbed up to the true summit of Mt. Cobbler and it was grand!.
Ms. C. appreciated me showing her the way up the crab crawl section to the top of the final knoll that is the true summit of Mt. Cobbler.

In the back of my mind I wanted to walk out to Mt. Buggery and back from Mt. Spec., the only section of that area I have yet to walk , but once we arrived at Mt. Spec. on foot on Tuesday 18/12/18 , having walked 12 kms ,fully loaded up with extra water for camping there , we were fatigued and the sun was becoming hot after lunch.
    Camp Creek was PUMPING!.
It was good that we decided against going out there to Mt. Buggery after lunch and relaxed at our scenic summit campsite instead ,because the weather changed rather quickly from warm and sunny to very cloudy , cool and breezy. Mt. Buggery and the whole vista was obscured by heavy low cloud drifting in like a wave or jet stream from the S.E..
It was not shabby to enjoy some leisure time watching this spectacle as well as the sunset that evening and subsequent sunrise from the summit of Mt. Spec.
Some young happy clappy ;-P Christian outdoors ed. students had also camped up there and they were nice enough people.
The walking tracks out there have not been given any love at all since I was up there last in May and Nov. 2017. Soon they will become jungle.
Had I stayed another day,I would have run the chainsaw over the first 1.5 km section of the Mt. Cobbler walking track coming in from Lake Cobbler .There were so many poles down across the walking track that it was like pick up sticks or perhaps akin to a giant scattering the contents of a matchbox every which way.
There was a huge tree across the 4 x4 track near Mustering Flat on the Speculation track . Luckily we elected to hike up to Mt. Spec. from Lake Cobbler and camp on the summit.
The weather overall allowed this to be possible.

Whitfield is a very sleepy place and rather hot in summer. Cheshunt is clearly the commuter belt of the metropolis that Whitfield is not.
The road into the Lake at Lake Cobbler was not too bad. The RAV4 with All Terrain tyres (the Tee Mobile ) was OK with that but the Cobbler Lake Track up to the junction with the so called "Staircase" on the Speculation rd. has been decimated by flash flooding and was only fit for a Monster Tonka Toy 4 x 4 .
Much of the Parks Victoria signage in the area has been damaged or trashed by brain dead bogans in large diesel powered vehicles. Thankfully there were no yobbos on the loose in 4x 4 trucks during our visit. NONE :)

It is a L O N G drive from Melb. to Lake Cobbler. The drive in via Mansfield and Power's lookout near Whitfield is rather slow and winding. The last rocky steep twisting section of road up to the Cobbler Plateau and down to the Cobbler Lake requires careful driving in low gear with some good ground clearance. A 2 WD street car would not be a clever choice of conveyance on those carriage ways.
Dandongadale Falls , as seen from the road were in flowing in full force, care of the recent heavy rain.
There is a ford that I had to get out and walk just before reaching the Cobbler Lake hut.
The drive home was one hour quicker because we returned via Whitfield, Glenrowan and the dull but quick Hume Highway.

There is SO MUCH WATER flowing out there in them thar hills.

    Photos are coming soon.
    T.

The Rock apes had been busy backing into the road signs in the area in their huge 4 x 4 Tonka toys.

The Last section is a crab crawl down and then up to the true summit of Mt. Cobbler.

It would have taken some time to chainsaw through it so it was better that we chose to walk on such a fine day.

The track seemed to wind up the plateaux towards Camp Creek for some time and distance indeed ,and the sun became hotter through the morning even though we started walking at 0730 am. The track was very rough and water damaged in some places and was not suitable for the Tee mobile. Elsewhere it was fine.

The weather seemed settled enough to camp up there. Some numpty had tried to burn green snow gum branches in a camp fire next to the famous tree. The mind boggles over how little goes on inside these people's brains.

Mt Typo is one of the walls of The Wabonga Plateau, it's one of those small to medium sized sub-alpine plains that are scattered all over the high country.

The Wabonga Plateau is not especially grand, but much of it is treeless or only lightly wooded, it has a few peaks with good views overlooking the Rose River, a few lookouts overlooking the King River valley, the rather lovely Paradise Falls and a tranquil and peaceful vibe. Well worth spending a few days exploring and you won't be bothered by anyone else when you're doing it.

There used to be a one square mile block of freehold in the middle of the plateau with a pretty double story hut. I used to day dream of buying the Wabonga Block and building a holiday home / bolt hole there that no one would ever find. But sadly the hut was burnt and I think The Block was forcibly acquired by PV even though it probably only gets a few dozen visitors a year.

I think Mt. Typo was on private land and PV acquired it and incorporated it into the Alpine N.P.. Most non outdoorsy/Non bushwalking/Non BC XC skiing people I speak to have never heard of the Alpine N.P., let alone Mt. Typo , Whitfield or Lake Cobbler.
They all go to Rosebud foreshore or some such place for their summer break.

The Tee Mobile at Lake Cobbler. It is not a 2 WD street car /street tyres kind of place to drive to .Taking a chain saw and related gear is not optional. It is remote and trees do fall down on the access road.
