10 cm of fresh white stuff fell from the sky overnight, just in time for the weekend!
Sounds like you're in for a big day at the shop tomorrow!
Maybe not. Too late to make the Thursday night TV weather report. Which means it's not likely to be too crowded on the mountain.
It looks like it is GAME ON for tomorrow .
I hope LM won't be closed tomorrow due to the severe weather warning. I notice Donna Buang and other parts of Yarra Ranges NP will be closed
good to go lm on Saturday? Saw Sunday may have showers. But Saturday too windy?
Id say ok but go early
Looks like it's on again for the weekend. Snowing heavily atm.
Lurker around these parts for a while, bout time signed up. Thanks for the updates folks.
Heading up Monday afternoon with 1 of the kids for a couple of nights - looks like Tuesday may be a cracking day.
Was up there last winter on a Friday and while not crowded it was busy enough - is it quieter mid-week and will the forecaster dump bring them along?
@FFB1975 FFB, It is definitely a lot quieter on weekdays. Snowfalls may bring a few out of the woodwork, but it's still not going to be nearly as busy as a weekend.
We're heading up Tuesday with kids - looking v good!
The cams looked the goods this morning so I loaded the chains, skating skis and headed for LM. No chains required but there was snow by the road from the Snowy hill car park and it was snowing at the resort base. Lots of school groups walked up the middle of the main access trail so the fresh cover was smashed up for a way. I walked up past the water tanks and clicked in to skis. No grooming at all, surprisingly, so it was hard work in fresh snow but there was full cover along Echo Flat trail and few tracks. The further out I went, the better the snow. It was coming down steadily at the Camp and the skis made a satisfying crunching sound as I proceeded along the Woolybutt trail. Some downhill cruising led to the climb out of the gully but down the other side my skis disappeared- this was very dry snow. I turned right at the Triangle and headed up to Upper Muster where the wind rose and the visibility was deteriorating. Time to head down. Cheers to the teachers and students on a day trip from Geelong; a long day indeed.
I suspect they were fearful of damaging the wet snow lower down if they'd groomed it this morning. I think they'll probably do some grooming tonight though in preparation for the weekend.
Yarra Valley primary schools collective day at LM - hence all the school groups
In years past, there was someone at the trail head advising people to walk at the side of the trail. Now, no-one. Why not run a basic groomer over the new snow to set a base which might last weeks? Managers running the place, not skiers. IMO.
Pretty much all the overnight snow fell when the temp was above +1 degrees. The snow down low would have been very wet.
With trail tickets no longer required, no one is needed at the bottom to check them (and issue advice).
I was there. Snow was dry. Just saying. No-one to give advice does not make for better trails.
I could almost be temped to visit Lake Mtn. on Tuesday instead of Mt. Erica. I will watch the snow report tomorrow night!
I tend to agree with you. At Mt. Stirling they get the groomers out very soon after a good snow fall.
That is showing thinking like a true XC skier not like a resort manager.
Lake Mtn. now seems to be aimed at squeezing money out of the parents of under 8 aged children , kids who want to have a day on a toboggan.
I would really , really love to have my say about the management of this resort regarding XC skiing over the past few years but....I rather keep my mouth shut !
When they did charge for trail tickets it only cost $20.00 to get up the mountain.
It used to be a great place for a day out on the XC trails.
It's still a great place to go skiing! I have been a few times since the trail fee was dropped and it was well groomed and great skiing. Perhaps they have got a bit slack this season, I have not been up due to lack of snow!
I haven't been skiiing for about 25 years, but have now taken my kids up 3 weeks in a row (the snow has come just in time each time). The things that strike me: there is no classic grooming and there are no crowds. I used to dread the bus loads of tourists and would have to get to the mountain by 8 to have some peace. Now it looks like they all go tobogganing - which is great (for skiiers). Only problem is some tend to think the ski trails are walking tracks - found some guy today from Poland walking down the middle of Wolly Butt - tried to explain he should be wearing snow shoes - I don't think he cared too much as he kept walking - at least he went more to the side of the track and what's with the parents who put their kids on skiis and walk along with them (without snow shoes) - they were really trashing the bottom of Royston.
That's the the trouble with LM, you can see it on the cams people going past the skiers only sign with their toboggans, and if you say something they either shrug or tell you to F--koff GRRRRR
How is the wind condition in the area and on the mountain?
All trails classic groomed
Wind speed averaging 20kph on the mountain, so not too bad at all
The snow cams are now showing the best conditions all year at LM.
Having groomed them they may even build a base and get a week or two out of this dump of snow.
Finally great cover at Lake Mountain. Spent the entire day skiing around, and it was suberb. Rawson return was fabulous had it not been for some boot track in the middle of the path. For those able to get up there this week, you should have a fabulous time. Staff were also excellent yesterday after a delaminated ski.
Great to hear, thanks. Bout to head on up there, looking forward to tomorrow - forecast still looking pretty good.
Brilliant snow yesterday! Even got half a dozen goes doing tele turns on the hill just before you get to panorama Was definitely the day for tele skis to plow through the fresh stuff
Yes all the trails were groomed, but it didn't last long it was snowing so hard!
They were fitting chains to 2wd, and was very happy I put chains on my car (AWD) at the car park before heading out to ski - kind of funny watching 4wds with wheels spinning when they are trying to leave for the day
Some great pics there. Thanks for posting.
Most of the trails were sheltered so no dramas. Had the best time on Sunday arvo and Monday morning.
Yep, we had to put the chains on.
And... yep, skated on deep fresh pow. That was hard work. I am uploading some photos of Monday.
The roads were a bit dicey on Monday morning. The car fishtailed on us twice. Luckily we got control of it. Phew! It was snowing at the gates.
So off we went to ski the usual trails. My favourite - Woolybutt and then back to the carpark via Royston. I couldn't ask for a better condition.
Extra deep snow conditions in a few places. If you were on skates, you are definitely in for a treat. Most trails were groomed except Jubilee.
The quintessential Helicopter Flat view. My favourite scenery at Lake Mountain. Oh, Mr EB is good at ruining the photo.
Trails were still holding up today, but very soft. Need a few cm to freshen things up. Need to walk 20m or so to get to the start of snow on the home trail. Entry into Lake Mountain on the Sunday was complete chaos, backed up well onto Woods Point Rd.
Ok tecks looks like we are coming up on Sunday , assuming that mother nature will deliver some good stuff this afternoon and tonight . Will have 4 pax in total , require skis poles and boots !!
I saw that there was 2cm on the ski report which is sad. Fingers crossed it snows today and tonight. I might come up on Saturdays to ski for the first time this season. Looking forward to getting back to LM cool pics @EquatorBunny looks awesome! I miss the place, I just got some new skin classic skis to try should be a lotta fun!
im banking on 10-15 overnight and this afternoon
First returns indicating that snow is falling 5 to 6km below the entrance gate. Snowing heavily on the mountain.
There is quite a bit of snow in the LM car park according the snow cam. That is the real determiner for me , but I am going to Mt. Stirling on Tuesday where it should be very good indeed!!
This shop went nuts today - we were run off our feet - I'll be at the shop till midnight, and back at 7am. Anyone planning to come on the weekend should come early, or risk a mountain lockout (like last Sunday)
I would hate LM if it was super busy. One day I will trek in from Keppel's hut in white season and have a sneaky visit in snow shoes around the boundary hut ruins.
Beautiful snow and sun today
Nice, I went up yesterday it was beautiful, fresh and fast. There was a few snow showers during the day. The trees were heavy with snow down low near the ticket booth. I had a ski on jubilee on classics it was beautiful, I didn't see anyone there sadly, it was nice and peaceful though
Near the booth
Wow what a great day. Snow was amazing and dry. Perfect xc conditions. Thanks again to Teckle at Mystic Mountains for great service and rental equipment with 6 pairs of skis et al to rent. Hopefully will be back next weekend!!
