Team Bears ran into DSE on Mt Margaret Rd.....they have been clearing roadway ....plenty of snow at Mt Margaret Gap......DSE are not going down Talbot Dve..Bears drove about 50meters downhill and gave it away real fast.....just too risky with one four wheel drive with limited clearance. Some skiers have parked and gone further on skis...DSE are clearing to green hills Track apparently .....they say many people will come over weekend and park up here. Now rodeo was following clear wheel ruts and we are up here in two wheel drive but we have new Maxxis. Mud snow tyres on the back of rodeo.I will take a few more pics shortly !It is still up here ...quite pleasant....we had our fun doing a skid turn and getting our arse back up the roadway !
Bears continued driving to Greenhills Track.
A couple of other 4x4s rocked up ....so that’s a half dozen sets of wheels clearing snow off the roadway all up.Road is in good condition and should be accessible in sedans if care is taken but chains should be carrried with two wheel drive vehicles.

Pulk is sitting here waiting for you! ;) Please phone and book it when you want it, as there is only one. You need to supply baby blankets etc. It comes with closed cell foam on the inside of the bottom and has a storm cover and windscreen, but is not supplied with bedding. And remember to really rug bub up, as he/she won't be doing the exercise like you will be.
Recommended age is 6 mths up. ie: not recommended for under 6 months.

Always get up at 6 am for an LM trip, beat the traffic and carry a chainsaw in the boot if need be. I have seen timber down on the road between Fernshaw picnic spot and Narbethong but have not had to cut it myself....yet . There will come a day when that be necessary.

Ms. Bunn thinks LM might get 10 cms of snow this week around Tuesday . If it happens then I am desperate enough to consider skiing on such thin cover on Thursday. I have a day off on Thursday this week , whereas I am usually at work on Thursdays . However a bigger snowfall is estimated to arrive late next week and one could be better served by spending 60 clams on the gate fee at that juncture.

    $57 I think?
On the plus side, they offer a "Midweek seniors car" price of $30 - but only an option if all vehicle occupants are seniors.

Yep nearly 60 clams per car!, so you have to pick your ski days carefully at LM. I usually drive up on my own so the Ka Ching$ factor is considerable. The plus side is that if there is sufficient snow then the Keppel's hut option become more inviting and feasible.
If there is enough snow I can also ski at Mt. Buffalo for nothing , Mt. St. Gwinear for free and JB Plain to Wire plain and back for Zero $. LM is so much closer as a day trip and when there is a decent fresh deep dump of snow it is worth paying to Nordic ski there.
    https://www.lakemountainresort.com.au/trail-conditions/
Looking at the current conditions , the notion of XC skiing anywhere near LM at present is purely theoretical.

The entry fee is quite reasonable, as it covers:
    snow-making
    snow grooming
    ski patrol
    road clearing
generation of power (they're not on the power grid)
    insurance

The major resorts get some of those things (eg: snow making) paid for by lift companies, and they tend to be on the grid so power is about a quarter the price. Yet the entry price for the major resorts falls not far short of LM's price.

The other thing to consider is that the further you drive, the more petrol you use (and the more wear & tear on your car) so the small amount you save on resort entry is easily exceeded by the extra cost of getting to another resort. Also, you're far less likely to need to use chains for LM.

Bear in mind too, the majority of people going to LM are snow-players. LM is set up perfectly to cater for these people. No other mountain does it nearly so well and makes it so easy for the snow-playing visitor.

While the snow ball throwers are doing their thing after a really decent snow fall , we are XC skiing mid week with the impression that we are the only few souls Nordic skiing on the XC ski trails.

Woo hoo! If only my knees were like they used to be :(
That is less than I paid in the 90's for a day out solo.
Then it was $20.00 for the car and $11:00 (per person) for the trail fee.

I think I prefer this pricing structure as an entry cost - it acknowledges that there is an inherent cost to the parking component and encourages car pooling, but means that it is not nearly as cost prohibitive for an individual to make a trip up vs a group of 4-8 in one car.

The carbon foot print of Lake Mt operations must be huge......
    Diesel generated power??

The cowboys are off the grid.....do they generate any solar power and store the power in battery banks?
I would not be too worried about emissions from vehicles compared to that from plant at the Carpark!

I think they're working on solar and wind.
They re-use the heat from the generators to heat the buildings and provide hot water, so in effect, the heating is free, which is more than could be said if they were on grid.
BTW, Baw Baw isn't on the grid either.

What is the story with Lake Mts stupid snow cams....have we got a time frame for their return?
We may have to House our Forum Correspondent up there so we can receive accurate reports !Yes a special position for Mr T.He could give directives to smarten up the Lake Mt Corporate Machine ...it seems to have seized a few wheel bearings this year?
Perhaps the forum needs a undercover operative in the coffee shop enabling more precise information regarding snow fall and trail grooming quality?

Well, at least he'd be sober. As of this year, no alcohol is being sold on the mountain. A hip flask may be in order.
Umm - I thought "dry mountain" meant no rain, just snow! :out:

I gather that is not the same as “no alcohol can be consumed on the mountain”?
No beers at a bbq could be counter productive!

Don't know. Does it say that anywhere? I doubt such a pronouncement could be made without legislative/regulatory requirements.

Not sure - will depend on the depth of snow on the trails. There's a guy up there taking photos atm from a skidoo. As soon as they're posted, we should have a good idea of what's happened on the trails.

Reply to PM sent. Mission LM is on!!.After tomorrow I predict the next mid week XC ski day at LM will be on Wed. July the 3rd. That is approximately near when the next major snow fall is estimated to occur. I shall take photos tomorrow and report back.

You don't put machines on snow with so little, it just makes a mess. You need to be
a bit more patient, it's just June after all.

Ms.Bunn is predicting 12 cms of snow on Tuesday next week followed by a top up of 2 cm on Wed. next week. In fact there will be some R**n on Sat. as well as some snow as the cold front progresses, followed by some smaller snow falls. It is a long way off but I am watching this trend. I am organizing my time to XC ski on Wed. week at LM.

As long as the groomers are working I will be able to find a way on nice terrain to escape those under 16's who will try to wake the dead with their noise.

The computer often says NO but in reality 24 hours out from the cold front coming into effect is the best way to forecast and plan a XC ski day.

Teckel may have to set up a jumping castle for the kids and station a few hot food vans around her carpark to capture the market before they waste their time in Marysville or at Lake Mt.

Perhaps Lake Mt Management could consider billycart races with participants holding umbrellas for Saturday. The Road Only has gentle incline to the Snowy Carpark!!Maybe the intoduction of a go cart track in the Carpark area.Team Bears r sure the Nordic community would embrace such developments!

That long boarding could also be investigated on the steep roadway just above Marysville!Perhaps Nokian make more suitable bitumen wheels for the elongated skate boards?

Come on you clowns. That's enough!
There's plenty of snow on the toboggan runs to survive anything. And it's expected to snow on Saturday night/Sunday morning to partially replace anything lost in the rain.
With the school holidays on us, the mountain is looking great. If you're thinking of going up, ignore these clowns and go, although Sunday 30th is looking a lot better than tomorrow (Saturday) when it will be wet.

We are looking at 4-9 cms of snow by 9 am on Sunday. If you are looking at this and want to take the kiddies to slide on a toboggan on Sunday at Lake Mtn. then go for it .
Lake Mtn. was not really all that XC skiable with only 9-10 cms last week. So I am holding off until it gets 20 cms with grooming.

For us XC skiers JB Hut is looking feasible/skiable on Sunday in the Dinner Plain to Hot Ham area with 13 - 15 cm s of snowfall predicted. Mt. Buffalo 's automated forecasting is still sticking with 14 cms at Cresta on Sunday by 9 am.
Take Wheel Chains for all locations just in case.

LM for Nordic skiing looks a bit grim at present and Ms Bunn is not suggesting that 20 Cm of snow will fall there soon at all. JB Hut to Wire Plain on Sunday week July 14th might be the best option for XC skiers. We shall watch the forecasts and reports and wait …. grasshopper.

At last Ms. Bunn predicts some good news for LM. The long range 10 day outlook and snowfall prediction looks brighter with Friday July 12th and Sat. July 13th bringing some XC skiable snow. Locations in VIC. above 1600 M ASL will get a lot more!!.I could almost get motivated to XC ski there on Friday week if it happens.

Keep in mind that if 24 cms of snow do fall at LM on Friday week then there is a chance that the road to the resort will be closed to protect nuff nuffs from themselves.
I saw someone slide off the road at Hot Ham last Sunday so it happens a lot more than is reported.
Therefore: It may be better on Sat. week after the groomers get to it. That would mean getting up there super early to get a good parking spot and before the XC tracks get chopped up.

However this outlook is at variance with the forecasters who clearly don't like skiing !:

After all the Tee Mobile has been repaired and is now fit for service .It was n't cheap but no car=no skiing.

We live in hope of putting the rock hoppers away and skiing on the good planks soon.3 days out from a proper snowfall is the best we can ascertain things sensibly and even that is still a matter of conjecture.

Anxiety and panic have gripped the snow community?

Now everybody settle down ....uncertainty is the word ...has always been the word...always will be the word....
Anything is possible/probable this is the Australian Snow Season after all!

Stop that despairing ....life is good always will be:whistle:
Deep breathing exercises everybody ....it’s not life threatening like the geopolitics of Hong Kong!

Even Teckel is taking things as they come!;)
