Friday next week could be the snowfall we have been waiting for. If it happens then I hope LM can cope and not close the road and the resort. I would be tempted to get up at 5 am to ski there on Sat. or Sunday next week !!

The BHP conditions at Langford Gap for BC XC are looking like Late September at present. If we do not get a huge snowfall within 2 weeks then we are Faaarked. Then I will be going back to surfing and hiking and cycling and looking at saving up to XC Ski at Silver Star in Canada every day for 2 weeks in their ski season.
    BUT
    We wait, watch and hope!

Two weeks ago I sent an email to LM management, via the feedback/contact link, regarding the lack of individual trail information (snow coverage, grooming status etc).

I received a prompt and helpful response from Alan Eason (Snowsports manager) who does the grooming daily. He acknowledged the issue and said it was due to a change in website design and, is looking to have it resolved.

In the interim, he offered to provide me with a report on any day regarding trails open, snow conditions and grooming status via SMS or email if I contact him on his mobile, or email the night before. This is much appreciated. The office number is on the LM page, and you could use that to contact him.

I think Mr. Eason is doing his best but Mt. Stirling's web page has the exact ski trail details us Nordic skiers expect from a ski resort where we pay to ski to there.

Agreed. For years, this was the information provided and was often a key to the decision regarding which area to go to.

Ms Bunn is still sticking with some decent snow falling at LM next weekend :) or at least the modelling which is automated shows that pattern is holding . It could be carnage on the road up there:eek: on Sunday week.

Good and bad at the same time. I think that's would be the potential date for the XC Recharge race, but don't quote me on this. Any closer date will see all the skiers will be heading up to FC for the Hoppet. Please don't tell me we have to go up there super duper early on Sunday morning. lol.

You mean there is a XC ski race on Sunday August 11th 2019 at LM?.
Would that be a problem for us Pattern based XC plodders? or should one get up half an before one goes to bed on a Sunday and ski at Mt. Stirling instead?

Isn't the FC Hoppett XC ski race on the 24th or 25 th /8/19 ?. I plan to be skiing out to Pole 333 via Pretty valley on 26 or 27th /8/19.
Weekdays are much better for XC skiing at FC/BHP.

Usually that is the main race before the Hoppet at LM, snow dependant. Since this is an LM thread, I'll be cheering for it. A weekend full of snow just means we'd have to go up early to secure a spot close to the huts.

And yes, the Hoppet will be on the 24th August at Falls Creek. Mr EB and I will participate of course.

Automated modelling shows a decrease in predicted snowfalls for ALL VIC. locations. It will snow next weekend esp. on Friday but 'how much?' is the question .

This looks like the one cold weather system this winter where I will be able ski/skin into Lake Mtn. from Mt.Margaret Gap via Keppel's hut track and back in one day, next weekend i.e 10/11-8-19 . That is to say XC skiable BC cover in the Yarra ranges above 1000 M. !!! :).

I hope the resort can cope with clearing the roads and car parks!
I hope they can manage the chain situation, without breaking out into panic mode!

To be Honest I doubt the resort will be able to cope.

    http://www.janebunn.net/lake-mountain
The automated modelling is bringing the ETA of the front closer to the end of the present week with less volume i.e 62 cms not 92 cms but a sooner arrival.

Friday this week could be THE DAY at LM for a front entrance ski day. I could be tempted to visit Lake Mountain on Friday as long as they don't close the road.
Another factor is that is will be effing windy on Friday and wet , and there could well indeed be timber down over the Maroondah Hwy between Fernshaw and Narbethong and elsewhere. A wise idea is to either wait until Monday for LM or take a chainsaw, wheel chains and a snow shovel.

I will have to ring the resort because their website is often bleeding useless.

I am considering going in via Mt. Margaret on Sunday and I will see if I can ski /skin all the way to the Panorama loop via Keppel's hut track in one day. It will be a HUGE day trip.

If that much snow does fall ,then the following 2 weeks will be skiable at LM and less chaotic on the roads.

I cannot trust LM to cope with a real snowfall :confused::(. I am plotting a day trip to Mt. Stirling on Sat..

However I will ring the LM resort on Friday at 4.30 pm to see if they are coping with snow and trees falling on the roads and people who cannot drive in snow and ice trying to enter the resort by motor car.
I would like to drive less and ski more in a day . That is where LM has appeal.
    http://www.janebunn.net/lake-mountain
'Mexicans' should check the Vic roads web site for road closures ( fallen trees, landslides, flooding, car accidents, black ice, snow drifts, general mayhem ) before driving off to the ski locations south of the Border.
    https://traffic.vicroads.vic.gov.au/
Ms Bunn 's automated modelling just 2 days out from the storm is
saying 90 + cms at LM.
    FFS!.
Even Mt. Margaret Gap could become iffy with fallen trees , deep snow causing even high clearance 4 x 4 vehicles to become stuck in D E E P fresh uncompacted snow. It will be amazing and possibly disastrous at the same time.
    :-0
Remember snow chains are useless in deep and uncompacted snow. Snow tyres are not much help either. The snow balls up under your car until the car cannot move. Just like cheap and nasty snow shoes but worse.

I think one should call LM Administration
    ph. 59577201
before getting into the car and driving to LM .
If LM gets even half a metre of snow down to 700 M ASL then I suspect VIC ROADS will close the road at Marysville all the way to Woods Point.

right now I'm at ground zero in Healesville... 1:30am 7/8/2019

conditions are... there are strong winds "Winds averaging from 26 knots and up to 33 knots.". if this continues in conjunction with the predicted snow falls, it may be fair to assume that at best trails will be closed. if this wind and continues in conjunction with the predicted snow falls i'd say road closures may be a in the cards...

non-the-less... some good skiing is coming to LM

If the snow goes really low just getting to Narbethong from the east might be dodgy let alone Lake Mountain.

Yes, a bit of patience may be required to ski at LM , most likely this coming Monday after things have abated could be the wisest option for rusted on XC skiers .
Reports have come from forum users this season of falling dead trees on the ski trails and ski runs being shut due to ice falling and high winds as well as nuff nuffs driving every which way on icy roads, means all this could be best avoided until the storm has passed .
    Generally
Mt. Stirling can cope with a huge snowfall and windy weather with snow and ice on the road piling up quickly . I know they can. I have seen it last season.

I am worried. It's critical that I go to Melbourne early on Friday am. Hoping there's no snow on Dom Dom Saddle on the Black Spur. If there is, VicRoads will close the road, whether or not I have chains! Snow is forecast to 600m, Dom Dom Saddle is 500m asl.

Mmmm. A dilemma based on uncertainty. We won't know what the weather does until it happens. Could you stay in Healesville on Thursday night after the shop in Narbethong shuts?. Write off a hotel tariff for one night on tax as part of your business ?

We were there this morning. Arrived at the roundabout and LM staff were advising cars to wait out at Marysville. Initially, they were to re-aseses the situation at 11am but updated their website around 9.30am to say the mountain would be closed for the day. Frustrating because we got different comments from everywhere and their update wasn't early enough.
We drove circa 4 hours for a toastie and coffee at Marysville cafe. Pretty disappointing experience today. :(

Mt.Stirling is open and kicking goals with amazing snow from TBJ onwards.
I would have gone up to Mt. Margaret Gap and BC skied a bit along Lady Talbot road or even driven onto Yea and Mansfield and skied at Mt. Stirling. I have yet to hear of Mt. Stirling closing the road because of snow :-0. SNOW is what they do , it is their job. They understand snow.
I cannot deal with the uncertainty of LM's modus operandi this year.
We were very lucky to get up the hill yesterday but the Black spur was blocked by a car crash on the way home and it took us 3 hours to come home via Yea and Whittlesea. In fact that is the same driving time as the drive home from Mt. Stirling.

Has anyone skied the ungroomed Huts loop lately ?. What do you estimate the snow depth up there to be?

Wed. next week looks like a mild top of snow up for LM will come .

Black Spur Road was closed this morning to the best of my knowledge after a “large tree”hit the road !

Vic Roads crews have had their work “cut out” for them lately!

It's looking like Monday and Thursday next week will be good :emoji_cloud_snow: powder days. IF the current weather holds... there seems to be a trend of forecast snow days being warmer :emoji_sunny: than predicted and not producing the falls we hope for.

Fingers crossed, hoping we do get another 14cm.

MSG still has 50 cm and more snow is coming to the Baw Baw N.P. this weekend. That is where I am going on Sunday :). Mt.Buffalo may become XC skiable on Monday at The Horn if this last hurrah from the Snow Gods delivers the goods.I will watch with interest .
