Skiing necessarily involves friction and we are not in Alaska, British Columbia or Hokkaido. Therefore there will be some wear and tear on ski bases, it goes with the territory. Better to take the skis which are most fun to ski and easiest to control, not the ones which save money (IMO).

The modelling from Ms. Bunn now suggests some snow will fall. The Great Alpine Road has the best hypothetical XC ski access options at present.

    Off topic but -
Mt Stirling Covid update says "The trails at Mt Stirling are accessible for locals for hiking, snow shoeing and XC skiing".
    https://www.mtstirling.com.au/covid-19-updates/
Interesting isn't it. The Gov rules say otherwise but the locals...........

Maybe that’s to keep no’s. Down?

The Govt blogs say visits are OK and NPs and state parks are open.

Buller-Stirling could be being a little ‘cute’ with their messaging? It’s no time for a free for all!

Have to say, Im glad it’s not my using my skis this weekend! (;-)

I don’t have dedicated rocky-set (mind you if I did ski, then I would by the end of the day!)

Can I say that I am not happy that LM remains closed. Let the health authorities and government make decisions about what is allowed and not in dealing with COVID-19. The resorts need to then show innovation and initiative to then create the best experiences and opportunity for people within the framework provided by government.

LM seem more interested in just saying 'no'. The 'stay at home' directive that they quote on their website includes the capacity for day trip recreation with size limits. The directive they quote does not require the resort to be closed. We can see that in how Stirling is open. Baw Baw (under the same management board) is open for day visitation.

There needs to be push back about this. Letters to the board of management and the minister responsible.

There is still a bit of snow left on the upper Keppel's hut walking track. I went up there today .I hid a supply drop and slashed back some of the most over grown sections of the track which would be a real PITA to push through carrying skis in full snow .
The track up there to the hut is in very poor condition. I had to do some 4 WD stunt driving to get up the worst section. It was very sketchy :-0.
I do own a dedicated pair of rock hopper skis which are old Fischer classic PB skis with new NNN BC bindings attached to them. I do not care how knackered they get. They are my early/ late season/ no base but gravel skis.

Sounds like lot of effort to save not much money. You've already driven up there, with brushcutter (and fuel), in order to save a couple of day entry fees? Ok, fuel is cheap atm. Dedication to marginal bc skiing, I say. I hope it pays off. Perhaps if you stay at the hut and ski uphill?
Meanwhile, why should LM be open when there is no skiable snow, the "official" season has not begun, other ski resorts are not open, the covid crisis has yet to be fully resolved? Caution would seem like the sensible policy, for a while yet.

Keppel's hut pre season preparations. May 16th 2020.
Quite the autumn adventure after lockdown hell.

This section of the road is utterly shite and it had me a bit worried there for moment :-0 , until I got myself out of trouble, again.

@chriscross , the idea is to hike in/ski in during early August[?] , snow camp at the hut , utilize the supply drop and ski for zero on the upper LM trails with day packs.
    People do it every year.
Just read the hut log book .
The winter gate is locked at Mt. Margaret Gap. The access on foot or on skis to the hut from that point
is about 6 or 7 kms.

+1 on that. Once you get over loving your shiny skis and accept they are a consumable item you treat them like tools. Use em, look after em but don't sweat the wear and tear.

Earlier, Victoria said it would relax travel curbs to boost tourism in its bushfire-struck towns, a key contributor to the southern state's coffers.

Tourists will be able to stay overnight from June 1 in regional areas in the state, Premier Daniel Andrews said.

Victoria will open up ski fields from June 22, with strict rules around hygiene and without shared facilities after a testing blitz showed low levels of community transmission.
    WE HAVE GAME ON!!!!!

Put the small chain saw into a back pack and ski up the Upper Taggerty Road.
There is snow coming on Monday June 1st - June 3rd. BOM and Ms. Bunn are backing it.

A little bit for LM i.e. 10-20 cms but the motherload for Hot Ham and surrounds. We shall wait and see what comes.

The straight legged over dressed people depicted on the XC ski section of the LM white season website do not look like they are actual XC skiers :-0. What happened to the slouch posture and knees and nose over toes with slightly bent knees and one's weight being thrown forward with double poling &/ or diagonal stride?
Who did they get a lesson from ? :-0
AND the snow shoers depcited in the website photos are also shown posing with XC ski gear and looking very upright and immobile indeed .I smell a rat.

For some reason, many of the local ski hires hire out XC length poles for snow-shoeing. But, snow shoers aren't double poling and have no need for such long poles. I hire out downhill poles with large baskets. Far more comfortable and practical. Sure, not adjustable, but adjustable poles could be a nightmare for rental, and LM isn't steep.

They won’t be snow shoeing much unless Lake Mt Management inspects it’s tracks and deals with the fallen tree issue.

A heads up for anyone planning to visit LM from 1st June to 21st June. You must register on the LM website that you intend to visit prior to the day of your actual visit. Bookings on the day will not be allowed. (The mountain said you must pre-purchase from 1st June to 5th June inclusive, but there will be no charge, so it's not technically a purchase).
Failure to do this will mean no entry. Until the 5th June, the only facilities on the mountain will be the bathrooms. No bistro. But they need to know in advance for staffing reasons to clean bathrooms.
They told me the link to purchase the passes will be on their website from tomorrow. I'll post the link here as soon as I know it.

Thanks Teckel / T - bit messy but things slowly looking better snow & access?

Have to say a reduced price for fewer facilities would be nice as mtn entry reaches ~ 45% Buller day Lift ticket? (Mustn’t complain I guess - budgets From Govt will be Tight this year & the next few? )

I am going for a ski at JB plain to Paw Paw plain on Tuesday. Just park on the Gt. Alpine Rd.at JB plain and XC ski.
With skiable snow and no staff on duty at LM to stop numpties walking on the skiable snow on the XC ski trails you'd have to be up there as early as possible to make it worth it. The same goes for Baw Baw.
If LM do not groom the snow at dawn on Tuesday to make it pack down and form a base then they have no idea .
We shall wait and see what happens but I do not hold out much hope for LM to be Mega XC skier friendly the way it was in the 2018 in white season.

I see on the LM snow camera that the pile of fake snow is growing larger and they have wheeled out the machine groomer .

I don’t get the Saturday forecast - snow to 1200m but a max of 7 C is not likely unless it’s a Mid morning max the a rapid drop. Weird.

Wax skis but be prepared for disappointment.

I kid you not. A number of times (not enough to say it is common) I have seen snow fall here at home at 7 degrees. It is not good snow but it is not rain or sleet. Big wet flakes. More commonly we get snow that will lay below 3 degrees.

That’s remarkable! Are you talking about Glen Valley / Glen Wills? If so it’s not all that high so would heat up and cool down more diurnally than the mountain top.

I can get 3 degrees. But 7? That’s on the edge. We also know how quickly a major front can drop the temp, hence the risk to underprepared folks in the BC!

Isn’t that what happens usually? Offline with s### snow and miraculously working for the next dump?

(sometimes I think I’ve played this (ski) game too long!) :rolleyes:o_O

I have been reading what lifted down skiing will look like this season and how things will be managed for ski resorts in general. :-(
I am not keen on using resorts for XC /BC XC skiing/ski access too much this season. Esp. with the booking and paying the day before caper. What happens if the resorts don't show a proper actual realistic snow camera indication of the ski trails and their true state on the day you book?. They will still take your money !! Call me cynical but there you go.

LM's web site seems to be designed to put skiers off from going there. There is no online booking form for the gate pass.
There are no up to date pictures of what the ski trails look like. Their video of the season opening did not mention skiing or even show anyone putting on a ski boot or hiring skis.
I will not hold my breathe about us XC skiers or would be XC skiers at LM getting much love this season.

Aaah Keppel's hut Track , Boundary trail , Upper Taggerty track , Boundary Hut ruins trail etc. It is a better way !!

LM might become skiable on Sunday July 5th after three predicted days of 4-5 cms of snow in a row. It looks like it will stay cold enough to perhaps skip the crowds and try for Monday July 6th.We shall watch and wait.

I reckon it’s touch n go based on the 14 forecast. If they’re lucky and the tail delivers 20-25 without rain afterwards it’s game on. Especially if they groom the stuff. If it’s 10-15 of sloop and not groomed or followed by rain...? Might then wait.

Thinking as positively as I can given WA have ‘stolen all our precious’ systems!
