Re: Lake Mountain to be run by private operator

I think this will be a bad idea no matter which party governs. Being in the VPS (not connected to DSE, PV etc), this change doesn't surprise me.
This mob are gutting the sector & anything in public hands is fair game & likely to be closed, flogged off or severely cut.
With the current climate I fear for the longevity of the resort. I can't see how a profit can be returned without large hikes in charges & probable reductions in services.

As things stand paking fees are very high - I feel there's little elacity in what people are prepared to enjoy on the snow.

It could be a very interesting 12 months in the mount. (good luck Teckel)

Re: Lake Mountain to be run by private operator

Been tried already and nobody would take on the resort, I am suprised they found someone to take on LM.
I too hope it is a roaring sucess for you Teckel.
One thing is for sure they will run it lean to have the best chance of turning a profit, reckon you will see a noticeable pace increase in the incumbent public servant staff.................

This will be interesting to watch, my tip is they will take snow cams serious from the go get, anytime their one snowgun is firing there will be more cameras than channel 9 pointed at it.
    Things will be different.

Who knows a wild thing might happen and they may engage some of their customers right here.

Re: Lake Mountain to be run by private operator

The $19 mill the government is giving to a private operator to build a conference centre in Marysville would be totally wasted if Lake Mountain were to close. They'd be better off gifting the $19 mill to the mountain.

106,318 visitors last year in a poor season.

Hunter, there's more than 1 snow gun. They have (I think) 2 fan guns, a more modern high elevated gun, and 2 shaved ice makers (one big and one small). Unfortunately, the temp up there doesn't drop low enough to use the traditional type snow makers. Eurosnowtec could confirm the full complement of guns.

Re: Lake Mountain to be run by private operator

My theory as to the loss last year was the huge expense of TV advertising summer and winter. Especially the summer advertising which must have failed miserably to pay for itself. But the insistence that all resorts must plan to operate 12 months a year, was the reason for that. The ARCC now recognises that to be an impractical expectation.

Past experience would not alert many to that, we have watched to slussie/ice maker spew out some blobs in the past yes.
Not sure if it is really more effective than that failed refrig container thingy Buller had a for a season or so.

Re: Lake Mountain to be run by private operator

It kept the main toboggan run open right through July when there was no natural snow. And approx 90% of LM visitors are snow-players, not skiers, so at least they had something to do. One of the fan guns was positioned right in front of the toboggan run cam right through last winter.

Told them so for years, summer visitation is a croc for all but thredbo, the only time that matters is peak winter season.

They should have dumped all the burnt building materials from the area on the mountain after Black Saturday, then covered it with a layer of dirt. (just joking) Instead, it all went down to some landfill on the Mornington Peninsula.

Re: Lake Mountain to be run by private operator

Hunter is correct - not everything has to run a profit not even in these so called austere times. Society/ people should help the Govt decide what services should be subsidised. Public health, schools & transport are good examples - they'll almost never make a profit but are essential for a healthy community.

But our parks, beaches, (probably) public pools & the like rarely make a profit but all users would suffer incredibly if we lost them to developers.

For me, Lake Mtn fits well into this latter group - it's more the level of subsidy & service mix that should be in question, rather than banging on about running at a loss per se ( hardly a unique attribute!)

Re: Lake Mountain to be run by private operator

It's a feeder for the big resorts who do turn a profit. How many people on this forum for instance, started their love of snow at Lake Mountain? Heaps of them. It's affordable for the average mum & dad rather than the larger resorts which are quite elitist and cater mainly for the well-to-do. Should money be the defining factor in who can go to the snow?

Just this last winter, I sent a number of customers on to Buller when the amount of snow at LM clearly wasn't going to satisfy them. These were people who otherwise wouldn't even have considered Buller. Those people contributed to Buller's bottom line. On returning their gear, some of them said that they were going to spend a week at Buller next year because they could see how much it had to offer and wanted to try downhill skiing/snowboarding. Likewise, if people phoned in advance and LM didn't have the snow for their needs, I'd send them to Baw Baw (being another affordable resort close to Melbourne).Other people driving past en route to Buller, stopped in and decided they'd go to Lake Mountain rather than Buller - all they were after was snow play (this of course in August when LM had good snow)
What I'm saying is that the resorts close to Melbourne should be regarded more as a pool than individually.

Re: Lake Mountain to be run by private operator

They tried that first and it didnt work which was why resorts were split up into seperate RMB's
LM was subsidised by the others but the return was probably not flowing on.
What tecks says is true but it has limits, that is how much can Buller and others subsidise LM against the future patronage they get from it.
Post split up their visitor numbers did not drop by anyway offsetting the reduction in subsidy to LM or BB with it.

While tecks may send people to Buller I think its worth recognising tecks that if the people are not happy to go to LM then Buller provides you the abilty to still service a customer and send them to the snow who might otherwise pass on a day at ther snow and not hire. It swings both ways a bit.
