    hey,

I need to go to us for work again in a few weeks and it's been a while since I went skiing, so was thinking of doing 3 days somewhere in transit (prob 2nd week of feb). Was originally thinking aspen as I have a contact there but have already skied there som am happy to try somewhere else.

I've literally done no research yet, have no idea how good (or bad) the season is.

I'm an advanced /expert level skier and would prefer somewhere reasonably close to an airport with on mountain accom that is not too dear, ideally west coast between lax and Houston ... thoughts?

I'd just look at where the snow is good and make a call based on that. LAX and Houston makes it very easy to go anywhere, have slide and then get where you need to go next.

Without having a look at any conditions, I'd suggest Snowbird. Close to SLC airport, accom costs can be contained and it's just good.

Good suggestion for terrain however given the time constraints sticking to more serviced airports could be easier.

    Mammoth.
Base today has about 170cm - Summit about 380cm.
Easy from LA - about 1.2hrs with Alaska airlines or United.

After looking at prices on mountain, I think I might have to stay in town! for Snowbird Im seeing $550/n + for 10-13 Feb on AirBnB!! Yikes

can get a place in SLS for the same price for all 3 nights! :)

Yeah. That's the containing costs part. Only a problem if the road closes. If that looks like happening just take the hit. It'll probably be worth it.

Good to very good season in most of western USA. All through the Rockies is pretty good.

Jackson is going gangbusters. 200 inch base or something.

Where are you going in the States? That would affect my decision. For a short ski somewhere I could get to in one flight from where I am working. For most places, that rules Jackson out (they have some direct flights, but not many - most go through Denver or SLC). But it rules Utah right in.

I'm pretty sure that United flies non-stop between Houston and Jackson daily.

If airport closeness is a priority go all out and hit up big sky in Montana - Bozeman is very close

Even land Seattle and go pnw

I might know a resort in Colorado that you can fly to using only 10 frequent flyer points and it is fantastic, infact you'd be crazy to look elsewhere.

Salt Lake City. Lots of connections to Houston and LAX every day. Major airport so shut downs are unlikely. Sub-hour trip from airport to resort. Great snow.

Or Denver. Same deal, except longer shuttle to resorts. 1 - 2 hours. You could even get to Copper Mountain. Also, if you are leaving on Sunday, traffic on I-70 back to Denver on Sunday afternoon can be a nightmare and worrying if you are trying to catch a plane. Or check flights into and out of Eagle-Vail, but it is a mountain airport, with all that this implies. More reliable than Aspen or Telluride airports though.

There are no other sensible alternatives.

You'll get some fuel vouchers to go with it. Think David Andrews/nadeals nonsense. Copper Mountain.

Yeah think I've settled on SLC (unless a friend in TX decides to come to the party and invite me to his family cabin in CO!).

Now to figure out flights, stupid expedia being difficult, wont let me see multiple flights in different airline classes ...booo

yep, I'd go SLC. Rarely shuts down. Rental car pickup to PC / Canyons / Deer Valley is 45 minute drive on easy Hwy. Or just stay in SLC and head to Alta or Snowbird, etc

Have a look at the lodges in Alta. They have a range of accommodation standards from bunk rooms up.

Gold Miners Daughter is one. Prices include breakfast and dinner.

Ok, flights booked! Bit of a nightmare as I cant do a simple multi-trip so am flying return to LAX from PER and then a bunch of one way flights internally in the states ... Problem will be if one flight is delayed the next flight wont know as they are all on different PRNs ... I'll also have to re-check my bag at LAX but that is not a huge issue as you need to kinda do that anyway ... oh well.
    PER-BNE-LAX-IAH-DFW-SLC-LAX-BNE-PER !

A mate is going to join me from elsewhere in the states and he's gonna organise on mountain accom ... somewhere ... it will be a surprise to me! :)

Ask at SLC if you can check bags through. I have done it from New York to Sydney via LAX on different tickets.

Ive done the work weekend fly in to SLC . Proximity of resorts to Slc second to none . I think Snowbird is onky 40 k or less . Other reasons is frequency of flights which trappers needs given hes time poor . Also you can also stay downtown metro hotel in Slc as well

Ok in Houston at the moment but off to SLC tomorrow. Intention is to ski Deer Valley Monday / Tuesday with a mate, and hopefully also meet up with another "ex-snoinfoer" (the man formerly known as darkone :) )

I tried this in Perth on the way to the states. The lady said they had changed the rules and you can no longer check bags through on different PNRs ... a bit of a PITA. I had to walk my bag at LAX from Term B to Term 7 ... the longest possible walk! d'oh!! but it was actually a nice bit of fresh air after 16 hrs of flying.

    Fresh air in LA?!?!?!?!

Enjoy DV! Go have the 'skiers buffet' for lunch at the Stein Eriksen lodge. But don't expect to ski after it!!

When I did it, it was American to Qantas which are partner airlines. That could have made a difference.

Exactly, we did the walk from TBIT to T7. Thoroughly enjoyed the crisp morning air. Easy walk (and this is with a 6, 8 and 9 year old).

Ok ... that was seriously one of the best ideas I have ever had ... and I have had a few! Monday was near perfect, today was ... wow! Some photos to come in a thread in USA, but I will be back to deer valley in a heartbeat. Yes it is exy but it ain't as pretentious as aspen. Older demographic, chilled and just so flipping easy!

Perfect snow today, great friends, excellent food, fantastic runs, and seriously spectacular weather with no wind, no clouds, and 35-40 F temps ... wow!
