I understand having special deals only available at events to bring people in the door but yes, as a West Aussie who also misses out on said deal - that’s pretty shitty!

First time I clicked through to this website even though Ramenman had provided a link earlier in this thread. Full English website. Very targeted. The recently posted video is interesting. It appears they have 'converted' Niseko skiers to real skiing in Japan. (Tongue in cheek.)

Now, they are promoting the region by saying "Aizu is Samurai City". They try to attract more foreign skiers by offering them some cultural experiences. In Edo Era(1603 - 1867), there were 200 - 300 domains called Han in Japan. Aizu - Han (Aizu Domain) was one of them. There was Boshin War in 1868 - 1869. It's a war of New Modernized Government(Red) V Samurai Clans(Blue) who want Samurai era(Tokugawa Shogunate) to continue. Aizu Han was on Blue side and they lost, but they are proud of the history and they've started trying to attract foreign tourists by use of their samurai history as well.

    About Boshin War : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boshin_War

I like the history of Japan's 19th century. This picture was taken during Boshin War(1868 - 1869), of course colors were added later on. In the picture, they are basically wearing Japanese traditional clothes, but a few of them are wearing western ones as well.

The new modernized government troops demolished Tsuruga Castle(Aizu Castle) in Boshin War. It was rebuilt later on.

We visited Aizuwakamatsu in march this year. Thought we only spent the day there in transit from sendai to tokyo. Passed the Alts Bandai mountain area. Samauri city pamphlets were noticeable.

We spent the day there, but there may be more to see than we got to. Note we were travelling with 5 and 9 yr old.
On arrival we purchased an all day ticket for the vintage style hop on hop off bus, the option we purchased was bundled with entry to tsuruga-jo castle (rebuilt but some interesting stuff), then on to oyaku-en (small but picturesque) garden, then onto the byakkotai memorial site and sazedo temple (very old unique wooden double helix temple) you can get more info on japan-guide or check out my youtube clip of our day at

I hope these sorts of idiots DON'T get a warning from this, and keep doing it in Japan and get caught & locked up. That way, they might stop doing it in Australia as well. ;)

I actually forwarded the article to my youngest to share with his mates. Mine knows what’s what, but who knows what his mates might think is ok on their first ever boys trip. 20yr olds can be kinda stupid.

Some pretty wild logistical stats in that report. 4 hours from Tokyo to “nearby” Hakodate. Ha. It’s another 2.5 hrs from there to Niseko. 50km from Sapporo? Maybe a stretch as the crow flies, but edging 2 hrs car ride. Makes it sounds so convenient to access.

(sponsored content) up the top right.
a little bit of creative marketing ;P
just like how Hanazono wins the galaxy's best ski resort every year, and Hokkaido backcountry club wins worlds best heli-ski operator.

i guess if you had a helicopter pick you up from Hakodate then its rather nearby :p

Well that’ll make my wander up Yotei in August super easy LOL

Friends of ours - competitive cyclists - are going for August. Staying at ours. They’re out the day before we get in. I’ll get some feedback from them on what it’s like for non skiers as a vacation destination for summer.

Nintendo will open its first ever official Nintendo Shop in Shibuya, Tokyo in this late November. Nintendo has been quite popular in Japan and many countries in the world but they didn't have a theme park or their own official store according to local media(There are many Pokemon Centers, though). Last year, Nintendo announced they would open a Nintendo Theme Park in Universal Studios Japan, so it seems Nintendo have started taking new growth strategies.

Odd, only available if you also have a JR east/Hokuriku/Tokyo wide pass. Not even if you have a nationwide rail pass, let alone no pass

Hakuba have been investing a lot for green season activities recently and they'll newly open Glamping sites at 1200m above sea level next week. Since several years ago, Glamping(glamorous camping = luxury camping) has been very popular in Japan and many ski resorts have started opening Glamping sites.

These are videos of average Glamping sites in Japan(but not Hakuba's)

This is for constructing new Nagasaka Gondola at Nozawa Onsen. The current Nagasaka Gondola takes 15 mins from the bottom to the top. New one will take only 8 mins and it's 10-seater, so you can sit. The new gondola is designed for wheel chair and MTB too.
