I have this friend, lets call her Bruce. She is travelling to Singapore and Malaysia with me TOMORROW. I have just looked at Bruce's passport and it only has 4 months validity left. Apparently Singapore / Malaysia require 6m validity for entry (even transit) ...

We have no choice now, and so Bruce and I and Bruce's kids will have to risk it as there is no way we will get a replacement passport in time.

Anyone else had experience with this? Any suggestions?

Book a holiday in WA. You need a fallback. The first challenge will be getting out of Perth.

There was a similar thread earlier this year about someone going to the US. Turned out to be not an issue at all.

I know someone who recently had her husband have a serious heart attack in NZ. She couldn't get an emergency passport to visit.

Renewal is very different to get a new one from scratch. Even if the new one is just because the last one expired. Never let it expire.

I got my dad in to SG on 4 months and a couple of days. They were very sceptical but I showed them his return ticket for a week later and my work permit and they let it slide. Your mileage may vary as it’s actually up to the duty officer of the day.

I’ve found that it’s the Check-in staff that are more strict. Again, depends on the day.

    Good luck.

It is the checkin staff I am more worried about! Will find out in about 25 min!!

    Fingers crossed

The conspiracy part of me suspects Bruce knew all along and just wants a few days without the kids. Bruce is clever like that.

ok so just had the joy of going from SIngapore to Legoland in MY. The Singapore imm lady picked up Bruce's passport expiry and let us through with a warning "They might not let you in" ... drove off the island to MY imm, they didnt blink. Back through MY imm today and Sing Imm today with no issues at all...

    5 down 4 to go!!

That’s strange. The passport expiry date as far as I was aware only implicates the entry into a country and not the exit. Every country is different regarding the length required on the passport also. You could have 1 day on your passport and leave Australia. They couldn’t care less. Re-entry into Australia wouldn’t be an issue if you were a permanent resident or citizen.

wasn't allowed to board implies the airline wouldn't let them not that the aussie immi didn't let them out of the country.

It is the airline responsibility to fly you home if you can't enter the country they flew you too.

    Goods news @trappers!

Just noticed this -- and you are good,

according to my Singapore ex-pat sources -- the real issue with less than 6 months on your passport in Singapore is if you are an extended stay, or already living there and dipping in and out - my 'Bruce' (not a +1) had to leave Singapore and return to Syd just to get her passport renewed during her 4 1/2 years stint so it would not drop inside the 6 month thing as this was an issue for her expat status.

Short stays generally just get a warning as you have experienced. Though I dare say if there was only a month left it may be somewhat dicey.

Yep, thanks @Richard . We are entering both Singapore and Malaysia on a 3month (90 day) tourist visa anyway, and the passport is valid for that, and have fully paid for and confirmed return flights.

I am currently in Transit at Changi on our way to Malaysia, MH staff made Bruce sign a waiver form when we checked in (Essentially releasing them from liability if we are refused entry, which I totally get and expected). Singapopre Imm lady didnt blink on departure this time, and Malaysia?! They'll let anyone in, was much more worried about Singas!

The airline has no responsibility at all. When you fly it’s that countries immigration that decides if you enter or not. People get sent on flights all the time without passports. If the checkin is prudent they may well save you a headache or cause one but that is all. I wasn’t aware of an airline refusing to fly people with valid documents. Expired documents are an entirely different thing and flight captains make the call as do immigration at the other end if you get in or not

Um no ... It is the airlines responsibility to fly you back AT THEIR COST if you do not have valid travel documents When you get to the destination and are denied entry. That is why Bruce had to sign the waiver, and why all airlines check your passport and visa prior to allowing you to board.

No point arguing on the internet.... believe what you wish. Australian passports are valid for travel to and from Australia until their expiry date. However, some countries may refuse entry to persons with less than six months validity on their passports beyond the period of intended stay. ... You may be required to obtain new visas in a valid passport.

My best friend is a pilot with Qatar and was from back in the Anset days..... so I know plenty in the industry. It has nothing to do with the airlines. Nothing. It’s Immigration

    Chilly,

You have totally missed my point. Yes it is totally up to the countries immigration to refuse entry (I never said it was not), however, if the countries do, then the airline is the one who has to wear the cost of flying the passenger back. Therefore this is why the airlines can (and do) refuse boarding or demand the passenger sign a disclaimer (which they did in our case) saying we are responsible for all repatriation costs if they have a reasonable suspicion that the passenger may be refused entry by imm.

I fly OS, a, lot. If my understanding is incorrect, then I’m happy to be corrected, but I do not think it is.

In fact, if this is to be believed, it is not just the cost of having to repatriate the customer, the airlines ALSO get fined $3500 for allowing a passenger to board with documentation that is not valid for the country of entry.
    https://airlines.iata.org/analysis/document-verification-travel-trouble

Of course the IATA is only the International Air Transport Association and probably has no idea what they are on about ;)

Couple years back I organized a work trip into Washington state to view fish hatcheries. Took all the key trades from the salmon hatchery project we were about to begin so we would better understand what we were in for. This wasn't strictly tourism so I got the WA hatchery authority to send a specific invitation letter for our group with names, locations and dates on it. We took two vehicles and drove south, group of 7 or 8.

A week before we were leaving, the head electrical fella says he doesn't have a passport, it expired five or more years ago. He wanted to give it a try so he arranged to be working at a job close to the border that afternoon, we would pick him up and if he was refused entry to the US, we would drive him back to his vehicle and then continue south without him. At the border, he handed over his out of date passport (was actually nearly 9 years expired) and current drivers license. CBP guy looks over all four passports and our site visit letter, then looks at sparky and his ancient passport: "Dont you like us anymore?" Asks a few questions about our employment and the reason for the trip then hands everything back and welcomes us to the Excited States. On the way home we handed three passports and a BC drivers license to the Canadian official, he didn't comment at all. (I'm pretty sure it's only the US that requires a passport for land entry, not Canada.)

Different story when entering by air of course, the airlines are very fussy about who they board because of the downstream costs to them if a passenger is declined entry. The point of my longish story is that immigration officials can and do consider unusual circumstances, especially when accompanied by supporting documents such as return flights, hotel bookings, etc.

Many many years ago, I exited the USA by car at Tijuana. We got in the wrong queue and never had our passports processed. You could do day trips then, not sure what the story is now. I then travelled further south through Central America, where at one point my passport was confiscated for working illegally. The Honduras police/immigration kept my passport until I left a couple of months after (while still working illegally the whole time) and fined me 100 lempira.

I then headed back north and flew from Mexico City into Florida 10 months after crossing into Mexico. By which time my original 6 month USA visa had expired and my passport showed that I had never left. I got a talking to and was given another visa and entry back into the USA.

I’m not sure things would be so easy these days.

    Dis
A lovely french family got booted just this week from somewhere on some aeroplane.
Silly as it's just an online approval for them afaik.
And yes the airline is fined and can have slots revoked for continual noncompliance.
