I was under the impression that the LPG powered power station on the mountain was installed by Optus and/or Telstra to power their repeaters. I wasn't aware that they were going to sting the resort for the electricity to run the lifts, lodges etc. I wonder just how close grid power is. There is certainly no power lines along the tourist road (Tanjil Bren does not have grid power.), but I wonder if the South Face road would provide an option to bring the mains in. I think that Erica has grid power.:)

That's frustrating (LPG). Are there any prospects of the resort detaching themselves for this noose?

I assume Coonnecting to the grid would be impossibly expensive without a huge grant from the state Govt? Wind / Solar como would require similar assistance at a time when resorts "should be self-sufficient"

I wonder how the big boys received their grants? Falls has hydro at its feet so the grid was never in doubt.

Makes you wonder about payback times if the resort could generate its own power 80-90% time with LPG as a back up??

    ....Never say Never! ;)

Interesting. LM is also not connected to the grid. They spend about $17k every 3 or 4 days on diesel to run their generators. Makes a huge difference to the bottom line of both resorts.

Falls started life as an SEC installation, and some of the workers built accommodation huts and lifts (legally and illegally) for themselves and their families.

There is/was a proposal to state government to seal the South face road (16mill) and run the connection to the grid under the road (4 mill), but it never quite makes it to the top of the govt funding priority listing. That one off Investment would be enough to allow BB a chance to break even, even though they have a shorter snow season. Stuart was always getting ministers up to BB and taking them along the South Face Road, explaining how it could make such a difference. Unfortunately Kim Wells was made police minister just before he had the opportunity to help out. Now, without Stuart knocking on doors, we have no-one to champion this cause.

I would have thought Belgravia would be interested if it meant substantial cost cutting.

I'm sure The Resort could form a business case with the loggers to seal the road. Something about higher volumes, greater transport reliability. ;)

Has anyody been up to BB in the last few days? I'm thinking of heading up next week for a final XC jaunt, since tows are closed, and it is free entry. Is there enough snow on trails or runs for skiing?

Cams this arvo suggest that a hike up top would be rewarded. Could be more to come from this latish system.

Always on your mind, I gather, or just a Freudian type insult? They do say skiing on one leg is good for technique, but getting up to summit area could be tricky. Then again, I think one of the lodge owners has a skidoo...

Think that was when someone else was running the place.

I would but I am just about chained to the bench here at the minute. The depressing thing is that they announced a few redundancies last week and I misssed out! Apparently our department is the sfest place to be.

Re: mr, was not someone running the mountain like their own little empire not that long ago? And, yes, I was fortunate enough to get a ride to the top on one occasion when lifts were not running.
Re: weerab. Clearly your skills are too vital to be allowed out of the industry that easily. Maybe a transition via part-time work. A sick day tomorrow would also be a good option.

In 95 and 96 that was standard!
    During seasons too.
No police or anything either so getting towed up the road from bottom station was a regular occurrence too!
Used to be the wild west up there!

If there's enough snow still on the ground on Saturday I'll be heading up to BB for a day trip/sneaky ski. If anyone would like a lift up from SE Melb or anywhere en route please let me know;)

Good for snowball throwers and tobogganists, but I'm not sure what the trails are like!
