    Hello everyone

I'm a Melbourne film student that is looking to direct a low impact student film that tackles World War 2 in August.

I'm currently looking for a location in Victoria (ideally near Mt Buller or Mt Baw Baw) that we can film in for 2 days from the 16th of August to the 18th of August.

I'd love to get your recommendations & permission to film inside a hut.

We are looking for a hut inside a snowy area. IT should ideally be evocative of 1920's / 1930's / 1940s. The older the better, the smaller and more bare, the better.

We will have 3 actors & 3 crew members, with insurance, full health/safety plans & permits. With utmost care demonstrated if there are any damages to the huts, we will be fully covered it financially.

I will give full credit & acknowledge in our credits as well as an interviews / press that we do.

If you could get back to me at 0410 737 457 or adamjamesmarsh@gmail.com it would be sincerely appreciated

We cannot make this film without your support & would be happy to promote your organisation or support it through any other means.

    Gratefully yours,
    Adam Marsh

you will need to consider access to the hut. in the national park you either have to walk/ski all your gear in or get permission to use some snowmobiles or other vehicles. this could take some time.

if you want exclusive access during filming you will probably need to use a privately "owned" hut.

The oldest huts are slab and older than your dates. Eg Wallaces on the Bogong High Plains which is in a park as Curra warned.
Razorback at the Stirling XC area is corrugated iron from memory and may suit you.
Moscow Villa out of Omeo might be an option.
Tracks going to alpine huts are usually closed in the winter.
These guys are worth contacting: https://hutsvictoria.org.au/

As Ziggy and Curra have said the oldest (and oldest looking) huts are made from vertical slabs. The Huts Association are a good contact, although if you want a quick response, I've written plenty of hut histories and acted as historical adviser on mountain huts, so I'm probably as savvy as most people you will talk to

There are no suitable huts in the Baw Baw area that don't require a difficult trek to access, although further east (road access through Licola) there are some options. The road beyond Long Plain is closed by snow in winter but close to the road closure gate there are a couple of rustic looking huts under Mt Reynard. The road usually opens beyond Long Plain on Cup Weekend and if you can wait until then, Guys Hut on the Snowy Plains is a very atmospheric log hut, about 15-ish minutes from the 2WD road. If you have a 4WD then Millers Hut south of Mt Wellington looks great on the outside (nothing on the inside).

Places like Wallaces Hut (slab) and especially Cope Hut (iron) near Falls Creek really fit your description of basic pre war huts that are nearish to a sealed road, but that will be closed until the snow melts (usually late October or Cup Weekend). However Wallaces Hut is so "classic" that it has become a bit of a cliche, there are photos of it everywhere and every local travel show has featured it at some time, so perhaps Cope Hut would be better if you don't want the location to look overly familiar to viewers?

If you need guaranteed access in August then the lower altitude Frys Hut is a four room slab homestead at Howqua Hills (near Mt Buller / Mansfield) and it would be suitable. However the inside is fairly sparce without fittings or furniture, so if you're doing interior shoots, ask me and I'll think of something.

I'm sure I don't need to say this, but if its for a student film, no one will really care if you have formal permission to film or not. They only care about commercial shoots for TV and commercial cinema. I know of plenty well made small scale documentaries that were made without formal permission of the government agency or grazing family that own a hut and there hasn't ever been the slightest bother.

Anyway, I could rabbit on for ages, so post here if you want to refine your request or if you have any specific questions.

EDIT. If you want lots of snow in August and can't drive all the way past Licola on a dodgy gravel road, then consider JB Plain Hut near Mt Hotham. There may be a few tents pitched nearby but with the right camera angles you should be able to avoid them. It's a rustic looking hut with a few trees. The aptly named Blowhard Hut on the other side of Hotham is in a very bleak location above the tree line if that is what you're looking for. Both huts have basic fittings that could be made to look circa WW2.

What about Geelong Grammar School hut on Mt Stirling. You could get a snowmobile up there in half an hour or o.

As Ziggy has mentioned, Razorback Hut at Mt Stirling sounds like a strong possibility. It's not too far from the car park so not too far to carry gear and it is an authentic cattle family hut. After a good snowfall (as promised in the next few days) it will be surrounded by snow. I believe it is cold to sleep in, not well insulated, but it has a fireplace. Go and check it out. You can hire some cross country skis at mt Stirling base (TBJ). Grammar school hut is too far to travel with film gear, etc IMO. Good luck!

Pity Joyce Brockhoff Hut is tenanted this season. Murray Valley Ski Club, Great Alpine Rd? Tallangatta Ski Club, Mt Wills?

The Razorback hut near Mt.Stirling in ski season is colder than a tiny black heart. I have spent a weekend of camping in heavy snowfalls and XC skiing there last year in August. I will be snow camping at JB Hut early next week. I will post a trip report with photos. Meanwhile Here are some photos of both huts in snow ,
    via these weblinks:
    https://www.ski.com.au/xf/threads/jb-plain-to-paw-paw-plain-xc-ski-trip-30th-june-2019.85039/

    https://www.ski.com.au/xf/threads/m...snow-camp-and-xc-skiing-10th-12th-8-18.82262/

With this heavy snowfall coming Tallangatta ski club hut would be suitably wintery looking. It is easily accessed by a rough 2 WD track from the Omeo Highway at Christmas Creek Saddle. You can hire the whole hut by contacting the Tallangatta ski club.

Keppel's hut is 7 kms from the winter gate at Mt. Margaret Gap in the broader Lake Mtn. area.It has been rebuilt after the Marysville bushfires but it still looks like ye Olde hutte.

If you are just making a simple film and won't be carrying too much heavy gear in a day pack and are not bad at XC skiing then Tawonga Huts near Falls Creek could be suitable.

Lovick's hut in the broader Mt. Buller/ Howqua River/ Jamieson River area is popular with 4WD people when the road is open after Nov. /Cup day. In white season it involves a solid trip on skis or snow shoes to reach it from either Cairn Creek Track locked winter gate in the Upper Jamieson Valley or from The Bluff Hut.

There are huts everywhere in the Vic. Alps and some of them such as Tom's hut in the Mitta Mitta area are not overused. Rooftops' Maps seem to show every hut under the sun on their maps even if they are just a breeze away from falling down.

The Old Stone hut at Lake Catani 's camp ground is only 1.5 kms from the winter gate. This weekend there will be snow at Mt. Buffalo and the Lake Catani hut will be a ski in / ski out affair IMHO.
If you cannot ski then use snow snowshoes to explore the area so you don't leave footprints that are a nuisance for us XC skiers.

It is , one would guess, a relic from at least 50 years ago. Entry is free at Mt. Buffalo and the campsite is also free in winter but not in summer. In winter the hut at Lake Catani is very quiet and is seldom busy. In summer it is most popular.

Bradley's hut is on the Cabramurra road . It is a summer only access route.

Round Mtn. hut is not far from the trailhead so if the OP has much equipment to cart into the hut to make a film then it won't be too arduous .These are both in the Kosci. N.P., about one hour by car from Khancoban. That Is my pack hanging up to dry outside the hut.

Consider two locations if it'll work ... outside snow shots, interior shots.

Silver brumby hut at hotham would be the same. Id expect permission would be needed but decent access great location

Joyce brockoff is a modernist building from the 50s so i dont reckon that would work feom an aesthetics perspective even if it wasnt a cafe now.

Spargo's hut near Mt.Hotham / Mt.Loch is a true relic but winter access is by skis/snow shoes or authorized snow mobile only. The Silver Brumby hut was a film set originally before it was rebuilt to last, so using that hut for a film would be apposite.

Anyway back to the huts. I am a bit of hut nut and can offer further details about a number of other huts that could be suitable. Once the 4 x 4 tracks/ roads open in Nov. then more options will appear but without the snow.
NSW has some excellent mountain huts too. The Round Mountain hut in the Kosci. N.P. is close to the car park and is old, rustic and accessible in green season. It has a good view of Mt. Jagungal too.(The Big Bogong). The Road up there is closed in ski season.

We should remember that is a Melbourne based student film with very limited resources and a deadline that is probably in a few weeks. So while places like (the locked) Tallangatta Ski Club Hut on Mt Wills might be ideal, they probably don't have the time (or the petrol money) to spend a day driving there, nor the cash to hire it.

So perhaps the best for them would be Keppels Hut (Lake Mountain), Frys Hut (Mansfield) or if they want lots of snow, JB Hut (Mt Hotham)?

Not at this time of the year. In an earlier post Bogong mentioned that when the road opens after Cup weekend Guys Hut or Millers Hut would be suitable.

Nothing on Mt Skene since the Jamieson Ski Club hut burnt down. :(

Heading north east there are McMichaels and Kellys huts on the Snowy Plains near Mt Reynard and the winter road closure gate. (This is obviously a different Kellys Hut to the one on the Bogong High Plains)

What about the 3 old huts just North of Dargo village built by the Treasure family who drive beasties from pasture to pasture up there?.
The winter gate on the Dargo - Hotham road is further North of those huts and those huts may even get some snow this weekend too.
It was foggy and cold when my friend & I went up there in Feb . 2018.

You may be on the winner there.

Lake Catani Hut, built in 1938 .
    Mt.Buffalo.
    12/8/19
If the film making O.P wants snow in the film, then now is the time. The Hut was far from busy when we camped there this week for XC skiing. The Vehicular road/gate to the campsite will reopen on the November cup day weekend. Then the place will be full of car campers and the whole vibe will be totally different at that place. The Camp site road was good for a quick XC ski to warm up. There is a slight hill to ski down near the Lake side amenities block .
