"Hardware alley" in ChCh is the area about 2 streets south (towards the Port hills) of Cathedral square - I think it's Oxford Terrace, but that might be way out.

Anyway, there's Mainland Sports, Mountain Designs, Bivouac, Kathmandu and a few others within spitting distance of each other. I think Mainland does hire stuff.

This close to the weekend you could be pushing it uphill to find hire gear.

    Enjoy the flight.

You could also try McEwings Mtn Sports.

    Good for AT gear.

Ah, you should have given me a PM a week ago, I could have set you up with all the deals. Too late, son. I was in the hills all week, just back to town this evening.
Kieran is talking about the intersection of Colombo Street and Lichfield Street. But the "2 blocks South of the square" direction will get you there.
