Perhaps a qualified hydrologist will have more accurate figures than these. Mt Beauty Pondage capacity is a back of the envelope 2,500 ML and the release is 110 to 130ML/hour or about 40 cumecs. So it could be dead empty and in this flood event it would fill in 24 hours. Would this have made much difference to the flood damage shown in the pics?
Khancoban pondage was releasing 426 cumecs last night with minor flood level being at 113 cumecs. A sight to see no doubt at 10 times the Mt Beauty flow- but in a wider channel.
It's been a long time between drinks wrt Alpine/Murray floods. We wouldn't be on here unless we were excited about it but one mans flood damage is anothers irrigation allocation... W

I just rang my neighbour in Tawonga South and it seems that the rock retaining wall has done it's job! However we do have some water on the block as a fallen tree has caused a bit of a blockage in the creek. But no real damage done, could be a lot worse. My neighbour says that if the retaining wall hadn't been built to divert the creek, we would have both lost a LOT of soil.

mountain creek rd and damms rd are open so drove through today. the water is receding from tawonga caravan park, but it did come up a long way. dozens of caravans moved to higher ground. can't tell what the impact on cabins was.

water has receded at redbank. the back road is still closed, but i believe local traffic can get through

Anyone know how the Kiewa River at Kiewa/Tangam fared? They've got the new (ish) bridge there but that whole area floods back to the shop.

I think vicroads was showing the road from kvh to tangam as closed, but it isn't on the list any more. water has been receding pretty rapidly in the kiewa valley. no other knowledge sorry

Thanks, fingers crossed but they are the 1st house over the bridge from the Tawonga caravan park.. Last big floods it came to an inch from the back door and hope the council finally cleared the front drain after numerous calls weeks earlier

It may take sometime before the Kiewa Valley Highway is reopened. Currently detour is either via Yackandandah or Gundowring.

High probability that creek will be living up to its name.

From the info I have access is via Yack and Beechworth and then onto the Kiewa Valley Hwy.

Location looks like it is on Kiewa Valley Highway just north of Gundowring but south of Kergunyah? You can get to Mt Beauty from Melbs via Yack and Dederang, Going north Gundowring rd to Albury is open

From Vic roads

"Kiewa Valley Highway - closed near Dederang Gap (38.4km mark) due to flood damage to the road surface. Detour via Yackandandah until further notice"

I normally come on to the Kiewa Valley Highway way below Dederang gap...so am thinking I should be fine. It's just getting to and through Myrtleford is what worries me

I have had people arrive today from Melb and others went home yesterday. At the moment you don't go near Myrtleford, you go via Yackandandah and Beechworth.

Had a goot chat last night to Doug at Ray's Ski Hire in Mertylford. He said that they had narrowly avoided the floods, and while much of the car park was underwater, they had sandbagged the front door. They are about 800-1000m from the ovens river.

Hopefully the Myrtleford road will be clear by Friday as we were hoping to hire some snow shoes at Rays!

the kvh is cut north of dederang gap
last I heard GAR was closed each side of myrtleford
access to falls via beechworth-yackandandah-dederang-mt beauty
until further notice, the FC road is being closed every night from 6pm to 7:30am. Make sure you get organised to arrive in plenty of time, or book sub-alpine accommodation.

I'm fairly certain they (Ray's) wil still be open irrespective of the road being open or not but you can always call them (03) 5752 1306 and they help you out with what to do if you cant reach them.

Thanks Currawong. I just checked the Border Mail and it said that the shop had been sandbagged, but that it didn't flood. Also, that the road between Kiewa and Tangam was closed and that traffic was being diverted.

I can remember sandbaagging the Kiewa Store as a kid!

I also checked the alerts....and GAR closures around Myrtleford are no longer shown as Curra says... should be okay to approach from that side and head to Rays

That's good news, should save a bit of time too. Any suggestions for tea in Myrtleford now that the plump harvest has shut down? BTW, I spoke to a young lady at Mt Beauty C'van park today and she said they have lost about 7 metres of land into the Kiewa!

Can anyone confirm that it is possible to drive to Mt Beauty via Myrtleford, Bright and Tawonga gap? The Vicroads flood warnings don't really make it clear to a non local.

I understand that it is all ok, via snow rd or gar (but gar is closed on the wang side of Hume)

why go via Bright rather than Rosewhite gap BTW?

We have rellies in Harrietville so I guess I got used to approaching from that side. I think the Tawonga gap road is also a better road. Travel times also pretty close. I remember years ago driving via Happy Valley and the driver missing a bend at speed. We ended up some dirt track feeling lucky to be alive!
