That street is operating exactly as designed with the Q100 at kerb level for when the s/w is backed up which, includes both peak rain events and considering high tides for outfalls. If there was no water inside the houses, it worked. Nearly all new streets in melbournes west are the Q100 for conveyance and short term detention

No because the rain has been steady here this weekend. The day I took the pic it was torrential with lots of lightning too close for comfort!

Not far off the mark! We are only a 100 metres from swampy terrain, I think our house might be on reclaimed land. I think some of Altona is below sea level, the council has recently started to build higher walls along the beachfront.

This intersection is frequently flooded after a decent bit of rain. Can you please explain Q100 and s/w? My wife's parents have lived here for 50+ years and floods were very common esp 60's and 70's.

Q100: Stormwater runoff resulting from a 100 year ARI storm.
    ARI is avg recurrence interval.

Hobsons bay has a notoriously poor stormwater (s/w) system because its only just above sea level @weerab . A flat landscape close to the sea means pit inverts are very shallow, and pipes cannot be large and can have nearly no fall meaning little holding or conveyance capacity. High tides can mean some areas in HBCC will back up at Q5 or Q10 (same principle as Q100 but obviously a more common flood event) because any stormwater system is only as good as the outfall capacity, or it has nowhere to go. For example yarra or maribyrnong rivers are both tidal (up to dights falls for the yarra, up to keilor road for maribyrnong). In another council with flat land we had to install a 2ML holding tank and big ass pumps just for a rail underpass under rail, so the water could get pumped up to the nearby stormwater amd then down to the creek

Some heavy showers still lingering across Melbourne's eastern burbs this morning. Some of the rain overnight was quite heavy.

Looking at the rainfall numbers, it looked like two bands of showers - one hitting the inner western burbs, the other hitting the higher parts of the outer eastern burbs. Jacana picked up 30mm, Donna Buang picked up 24 (and 234 this week).

Not sure if I posted this previously, but IMO it was a good example of where the models agreed, and where there was disagreement on Thursday, and why 'senior forecasters' on the BoM shouldn't go shooting their mouths off declaring with absolute certainty what going to happen in Melbourne over the weekend.

So 75-200mm. No complaints from me. I got bang on 100mm (7km NNE of CBD). Good job BOM (shite job traditional media)...

What's the problem? If they hadn't warned of bad conditions and it turned out to be at the upper extreme of what they did forecast, you'd be whinging about that.
When a few years ago, shocking weather was forecast for the Sydney-Hobart yacht race, no one took much notice, and a number of sailors died as a result. Is that what you'd prefer?

Somehow, I think a lot of the anti-BOM stuff is coming from people who aren't happy with climate change. The event we had on the weekend may or may not have had something to do with climate change. Freak weather events have occurred since the dawn of time. No reason to get upset either way with the BOM.

This weather event reminds me of nearly 9 years ago. I began a thread stating that unprecedented weather conditions would impact Victoria (country Vic in particular) and suggesting that people get their children and animals to safety before the weekend. I quoted some experts in that particular field. For the next few days I copped a lot of shit from a small number of people here saying I was being alarmist etc etc. Then the fires hit - Feb 7, 2009. Sometimes to stress the worst that can happen is the best option.

Sorry. I mentioned it in passing as a number of people on media forums have used that to attack BOM and their forecast (which was surprisingly accurate). I thought that may be where @Rush was coming from, as I can't understand any other rationale for this statements.

You're not alone teckel. When Daniel Andrews came out last week and suggested there could be severe and dire impacts, I also thought of John Brumby doing similarly in those few days before Black Saturday.

It's interesting seeing some of the absurdity of the commentary and vitriol directed at the BOM regarding the warnings. It's quite rare IME to have seen multiple places in Victoria outside of the alpine regions tally over 100mm in a 24 hour period, especially so close to Melbourne. The fact that our catchments weren't saturated beforehand surely assisted in avoiding wide scale flooding IMO
