Why wasn't he picked up in the sweep by patrol at the end of the day ?.
Being staff was he riding after close of lifts before his shift ?
Sadly a few questions to be answerd. Doesn't change anything.
Just a sad day all round.

    :(

Our mountains are looking dangerous this year, two deaths and a few near misses already. Be careful people.

I dont think sweep carry thermal imaging gear, I have hidden from them in the past. If they dont see you, how can they know?

    Very sad.

Remember if you are sliding by yourself, be very careful, and thoughtful, about where you ski

(This is clearly not the time or the appropriate forum to do this and I Don't mean to probe telecrag - But what the hell are you doing hiding from the sweep!? You need to listen to your own advice - be careful and thoughtful. Have you considered if something was to go wrong and you were not accounted for by friends, a search would be conducted which would put others at risk!)

Thats all I was told. But I would expect it to be either north or south of there, in a lower traffic aria.

I'm guessing the guy was ...20ish ...and his passion got the better of him.
I've been so passionate to get out to places and nearly been in serious trouble.
I wonder which creek he was found in?

May he find his soul's home resting in God's bosom.

And there was an avalanche at Thredbo last Sunday? wow.
    http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/skier-lucky-to-be-alive-after-avalanche-at-thredbo-20140702-zstv1.html

Someone said this unofficial run known as "hipcheck" is in this area:
" As you go up Gunbarrel it is on the left after you pass over Dream run, but down deep!"

The traverse looks to be "Guthega Way"?
And DT = the Double Trouble run?

End up in the creek and the chances of being found on sweep is minimal!

Poor guy.... I hope it was swift. Would have been terrifying!

I remember when I first got trained in avalanche safety and the more I learned the more I realised I was lucky to be alive. We as Aussies mostly have NFI about avalanche safety, unless they have done some kind of specific training. Across these forums I see some pretty ignorant comments wrt avalanches. The conditions are ideal atm for avys, and more technically experienced riders will be chasing the steeps (>30 degrees) and deeps. Sudden snow loading (big dump across three days), buried layers (ice, grass, rock, depth hoar), wind loading, aspects etc all say stay the hell away from those slopes. But even the most experienced (and even those who should know better) riders are screaming "no friends on a powder day", and rushing to get first tracks without doing the most basic of risk assessments of the slope they intend to ride. Ditto for punching into tree wells, falling into creeks.

This really hit home for me on my first day of training. Without a comprehension of the hazards it is impossible to take into consideration risk. Feel so bad for the poor guy and his family.

Another person was also rescued on Mount Anton on the same night. Crazy times out there.

Do you know anymore Donza? I chated to a couple of blokes that headed out that way. Old mate boarded off the south side of the Crags and his mate was suppossed to film him from Awesome Spur. Pretty sure it wouldn't have been them though as they appeared to know what they were up to.
