On the weekend, I noticed that some of the potholes at Horse Hill Carpark were getting quite substantial in size. I was wondering two different things... If salting the roads more would assist with there being less snow on the roads and then people wouldn't be needing chains quite as often; and whether it was the cars that was doing the majority of the damage, or the shuttle buses that are running constantly?

It seems very dangerous, and almost like a mindfield!

salt could be contributor to the pothole formation

I don't think you can actually leave Horse hill (where you do the u-turn to head down the mountain) without going through at least one of the pot holes.

There is also a reasonably deep one on the way down the mountain, saw a 4wd pulled over changing a flat tyre just after the pot hole, i could only guess that he/she hit the hole.

I thought there were quite a few substantial potholes scattered along the entire Melb - Buller route.

the rmb are using a new "magic mix " to help melt the snow quicker on the roads. if this was affecting the road surely the whole road would have pot holes in it

depends on how uniform the underlying soil is, salinity is a major cause of potholes

the new 'magic mix' has only been used for a couple of weeks, its the same stuff as used
for the last couple of years into Hotham. Salt has not been used of many years. The pot
holes have been around for a long time. I will ask the question as to when these areas are
    due for maintenance.

It's amusing how someone trips over a bit of concrete on the sidewalk and sues so they repair every patch of concrete that's slightly out of level, but massive potholes in the road are OK.

The hotham stuff ends leaving film of crap on your car that sticks to the duco..creating a sandpaper like feel..the only way to get it off is to clay block the whole car.

At the same time I wouldnt be taking the Porsche/BMW/Merc to the snow, and I guess those that do can afford to have someone else clean all the gunk off for them. I've found at the end of the season i'll give the car a pressure wash, then warm carwash with a sponge, then pressure wash again and it gets most of the stuff off.

There are two big ones at HH carpark entrance, and a few smaller ones at the U-turn exit. They're right where you'd normally drive, but plenty of bitumen on the inside of both turns so they're easily avoided. You just do a tighter U-turn. I'd assumed they develop from general freeze-thaw cycles and earth movement (there's a minor landslide on the way up too).

I'd be more concerned hitting wildlife. If you were a roadkill scavenger you'd have enough food to last until next season, and then some. Was disappointed to see so much carnage.

Sounds as though if they were to get any bigger we might have solved the parking shortage problem!

IMO the gradient of those roads with the potholes is the cause of the potholes that if the road was flat would not be the case due to the shear force loads of the busses on the gradient. Likewise at the U turn spot for the same reasons.
The tyres just shear off the sealed top surface of the bitumen.
It probably needs paving like they have in the village to stop it falling appart on steep gradients.

On the way home on Sunday, we saw a car that hadn't been able to dodge one of the potholes, I'm not sure on the damage done but he was definitely replacing the tyre.

And you're right about the carnage, the only Aussie creature I seemed to not see was the echidna! I'm pretty sure the possum wasn't playing [IMG]

About the roads (thinking aloud), we need to coat them all in the hydrophobic spray (from above), so that snow/ice can't form onto them. Snow chains should then be required less meaning the friction (destruction) of the roads shouldn't be as severe, and all we have to work about if them building roads properly. Salt/special mix shouldn't have to be used (as much?), as the roads would be hydrophobic.

I actually can't remember a time when we didn't have to avoid potholes at Buller o_O
