Yeah but normally there's a bit of speckle at the rear. Lets hope those "low blobs" south of perth track east to the alps and get some of that NW infeed on the way.

If ACSES is right (and it's an outrider at present) the collective excitement will have washed away by Thursday next week.
Let's rejoice in the current snow but remember it's still very very early in the season and this might be a false start.

Yeah some really good rain across almost the entire State. Look at that bay effect though!

I had an appointment at 12 down at Middle Brighton, rained all the way walking over, and all the way walking back. Good steady rain.

Nah, no bay effect. Just more weather stations in that area.
If the weather was from the SW, perhaps it would be more applicable.

Warm bay waters meet cold SW wind (in Melbourne's case), and you get precipitation following.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake-effect_snow

I'm not totally sold that PPB is big enough to cause it, but it's an interesting thought.

Im surprised its not below zero @ Perisher Village. Normally when its 10-11 degrees in Canberra ( bleak winter like day here ) its guaranteed below 0 there. Thats what I use to determine whether a rush trip down is worth it for fresh snow with cold temps. Perhaps that scale only works in proper winter?

Getting off topic, I do think we get "coldies" forming off the bay though.

You get it from Mitcham/Ringwood heading out the Maroondah plenty. Often drizzly out there in the SW airstream while closer to the city remains dry.

What I was really referring to there is that the dark blue spots are more prevalent on the eastern side of the bay, compared to the western areas, which are affected by the rain shadow from the Otways.

except most of this rain has come from a more NW aspect I think you'll find, not the SW. perhaps rain shadow from the macedon ranges area?

Interesting. According to physics, 1 degree cooler per 100m higher when air is dry, 0.6 degrees when humid. So given its humid today the altitude effect should subtract 6-7 degrees relative to canberra? Soz for off topic.

Looks that way. It is a little odd - looking at the AWS readings there isn't that much of a difference, perhaps it's just how the snapshot of the 24 hours fell.

Weather has swung to the WSW since midday here in Melbourne, hence a showers have got a little heavier for now.
