GFS looks good for some 1800+ falls on the main range friday 02, trailing off the low.

nope, not convinced on this one. looks to be too warm for anything under 1800m, and when it does get cold enough it looks like there wont be much moisture around, and the pressure is too high.

when this front crossed around the coast of WA it picked up a lot of tropical moisture from the north which i think will keep the temps above what is needed for snowfall. 850hpa charts seem to agree with me also.

sorry guys, but i dont like the look of it, hope im wrong.

    BOM (NSW) is more optomistic

    OUTLOOKS:
Friday : Frequent showers falling as snow above 1500 metres.
Saturday : Showers, falling as snow above 1500 metres, easing.
Sunday : Mostly fine, partly cloudy.

    Comments:
A low pressure trough near the New South Wales coast is causing shower activity
over the coast with some showers possibly reaching the region tonight, falling
as snow about the peaks. Another trough of low pressure, currently over the
Bight, is forecast to reach the region on Thursday bringing showers and snow
above about 1600m and further significant snow falls on Friday. On Saturday the
showers and snow falls will ease as the day goes by, and should clear by Sunday.
A ridge of high pressure will then bring fine conditions early next week,
    however cold temperatures are expected.

Looks like it shaping up better than expected from BOM point of view
"Another trough of low pressure, currently over the Bight, is forecast to reach the region on Thursday bringing showers and snow above about 1600m and further significant snow falls on Friday"
There looks to be plenty of cold air on Saturday from GFS. 10 - 15 is my bet

Yeah, looking at GFS from this afternoon through to the 2nd it looks like a bit of precipitation about the hills. It seems a bit confused on temperature though it looks cold enough, but then again it doesn't quite... So perhaps just snow around the higher areas with some sleet/r*in about.

What about the ol theory of cold and raining in Adelaide means smoo in the alps within 2 days.

If smoo == snow, and you change 2 days to 1 day, then I'd suggest it can be useful. Certainly not a prerequisite for snow in the alps, nor is it a given if this happens, but a better indicator than for example similar weather in Albany!

On another note, I see the topic of this thread has already been changed once, but perhaps it should be extended to the 3rd as well? Looks like there could be a bit of precipitation around at least Saturday morning.

Let me guess, that obs thread is being filled with forecasts?

It looks good for some decent falls on higher ground ( >1800m) from the wee hours of tommorow morning, clearing by Saturday morning, but the chance of a few flurries again Saturday night.
