To be fair, I'm pretty sure we could describe a snowfall as an insignificant dusting and no-one here would bitch about that, therefore significant dusting should also be OK.

It goes along with the idiots who say fresh "powder" has fallen in the mountains like all the reporters tend to do. Powder? At barely under freezing? I don't think so. Worst lazy journalism ever. "A fresh dump of powder".............bah.

Why so much angst about ski resorts making a big deal about a little snow? Marketing companies are paid to do exactly that aimed squarely at the 99% of plebs who don't know what's going on, if you don't like it unsubscribe...
P.S I observe great autumn day in Sydney, cold wind, warm sun!!

Yes I agree. As predictable are the marketing blurbs - so is the outrage.

    They're hardly going to say...

Today's crappy snowfalls point to a dreadful season ahead of the usual slush, long queues and overpriced food we know so well from previous years. On behalf of all businesses, we advise that you save your money and go to Vail ...

Still snow on the ground at Hotham up high. I observe excitement on the mountain and optimism for a good season. I observe the beer tasted good today at the new brewery at Dinner plain and I observe that some forum posts aren't obs and very negative!!!

After all the talk in the predictions thread that's what I thought too. I guess they might fire up a few on Front Valley as a PR exercise. Always looks good on the cams.

Some significant amounts of water getting down Tassie rivers now.

Lots of the smaller or run of the river impoundments are now spilling - Lake Pieman has risen over 5m in the last fortnight, currently spilling, by 2m!!

Not just in the west either, looks like the Mersey and Derwent catchments are carrying plenty.

Pine Tier lagoon is spilling again, I think my breakdown paddle may have been dislodged from it's resting place upstream and be on it's way into a power station.

Impressive figures, and no sign of letting up over the next week. Think May 16 will go well over 1000mm and close to 1500mm totals for places in the West Coast Range. Remember being fairly flogged by some relentless frontal systems this time last year in Tas, when the fronts are sliding under the mainland during the transitional seasonal period, the island is often coping it. Looks like a lot of it's come down with the temps sitting well down in the single figures, that cold, extra wet rain, the very joy of bushwalking!!

A few years ago now, flew into the South West for the winter solstice during a few hour window in the weather. Only way we were getting out was on foot, once the window closed, it did not stop precipitating in some form for ten days straight. I acquired a non-freezing tissue injury from wading in cold water for so many days.

Ironically, plenty of locals sit on the sunny east coast, blissfully unaware of the level of wet and cold a few hours west.

Australia without Tassie would be a pretty boring place....

There were still a few reasonable falls of rain yesterday in the high country.
All up, I reckon the high country did extremely well from the system. These totals across the ranges tell the story:
    Mt Buffalo: 353
    THredbo: 222
    Hotham: 238
Falls Creek: 169; Rocky Valley: 249
    Harrietville: 129
    Buller: 204
    Whitlands: 203
Steamflow into Melbourne's dams has finally been brought back up to "above average" levels for the first time in seven weeks.

Where's that Rocky Valley measurement taken from I wonder? Assuming it's somewhere on or around the dam, that's a huge variation from the Falls AWS for such a close proximity.

Actually, scrap that. Surfs been epic in Vic with the constant fire up in the southern ocean.
