im no weather expert but annecdotally in my lifetime i have never seen such a predominance of easterly winds over the last 3 months, but in particular the last 2 weeks

Interesting after planning for many years , at the 11th hour the 3rd runway at Melbourne Airport switched directions.
Assume they were paying more attention to last 5 -10 years data not last 100?

SE and East winds are not that unusual in late spring, early December.
But I can't seem to recall anything like this in February.

I remember numerous christmas years at sperm whale head (when you could camp) and trailer sailering every corner of the gippsland lakes when youd have to hide boats up in picnic arm or one of the rivers from big easterlies. Agree not feb though...and also agree not 2 weeks continuous. When big droughts break, they break hard imo. My gut feel is look out labour day weekend or thereabouts in melb area.

Sorry CC, i'm going to whole heartedly disagree with you here. I think that saying comes from clueless schmucks like Paul Worstelling who couldnt figure how to fish our bays in and Easterly and therefore struggled. I have caught excellent bags of fish in wp in an Easterly. Granted it was not a howling Easterly but I wouldnt be fishing in a howling Westerly or Southerly either (I can fish a Northerly >20kts depending on tide where I like to fish). I also know where I would go to catch fish in ppb in an Easterly, and while they are not traditional fishing spots, they work in an Easterly. Blokes just need excuses as to why they didnt catch fish and remember, 90% of fishos catch 10% of the fish, so guess what the other 10% catch?

Fair enough. IMO there’s less places to hide in an easterly, catching is possible. Easterly wind generally rule out Bass Strait, although I remember one memorable trip off the nobbies.

You know I reckon I said that a few years back when the same thing happened. And because I have said it previously, I reckon it probably happens more often than people realise. Now that I live down on the peninsula Easterlies howl at me as they get funneled up from the latrobe valley. Dont believe me? Take a look at the winds for Rhyll and Moorabbin (Cerberus isnt good for wind indication as it is a little sheltered) and compare them to Scoresby. Huge differences recently in wind strength. Scoresby is sheltered by the Dandenongs, I am not.

tl;dr - yeah it's been Easterly a bit lately and it's not 'common' but it happens more than we think/remember.

Eastern entrance (Cleeland Bight) in an Easterly forget about it, same as Western entrance flood tide + Easterly. North Arm becomes slop but our from Corinella/Lang Lang and around the top of Tooradin are all very fishable.

Yeah I think the 'east' and 'least' has come from the fact that they rhyme and fishing in a gale is no fun ....unless you are crabbing in the bering sea perhaps

I recall 2 maybe 3 summers ago at balnarring / somers over NY we had a full week of 25knot easterlies

I do however agree that easterlies have been in short supply, as the years-long dry in gippsland, and lack of snow for ben lomond and rain in tassies NE will attest. It seems in particular, a lack of bombing east coast lows, winter or summer is part of this. Now the 'weather' is moving more to the indian ocean (and we arent just thinking 'pacific'), i believe this will improve.

Showers started here half hour ago. A storm crossing Geelong now and more along the west coast. Quite a warm night.

Yes understand the geographical contrasts we are at the western end of the Latrobe valley and I can attest to the wind funnelling up there from the east . Consistently 40-50+ kph for sustained periods where we are. I'm about to change the roofing screws for the gal roof to hurricane strength versions

Can hear the distant rumbles of the storm line coursing the bay currently here in Elwood.
Today should be interesting. Especially the arvo once the sun hits

Saw a few bolts jumping out of the cells in the West about 8 this morning while driving in on the Monash. Hoping for an interesting afternoon after this stuff clears off.

Some short sharp storms here in Port Melbourne. They aren’t hanging around long though.

Had a few rumbles here but it’s just slipping south of us so far. Dog down the road barks any time even a small storm is nearby. Poor things been going off this morning. Temp did briefly reach 27c here about an hour ago but back down to 22c again after the last little shower.
Could we be lucky enough to see anything like last Friday?

Yeh, that storm line is running north-south and is in line with Geelong moving east.
Should really fire up over the next hour or two.
    Getting very dark outside.

Models were showing lots of activity to around 4pm for the city, winding back a bit and then perhaps reforming late tonight.

Some really heavy, nice rain in the city now. Very dark outside - drop off 10c and this'd be the perfect winters day.
