Here's previous weeks' weather in Mena, AR.:

For the week of Nov. 8-14: Mena's Avg. Max.: 62.9F/17.1C; Avg. Min.: 40.2F/4.5C

Another warmer-than-normal week; which had a humid feel (and good amounts of cloudcover) on the 8th & 9th--warmth was ahead of a Pacific cold front (which passed through on the afternoon of the 10th). A Warm front gave more warmth (and spotty rainshowers) on the 13th; the more solid rainshield/thundershowers was not far to my N/NW/NE; the trailing Pacific cold front came through--mostly dry--on the afternoon of the 14th. We really could use more of a raindump here, as it's getting fairly dry. The windy conditions throughout the week have cause many more leaves to fall off the trees.
Overall Low-around 11:30PM-listed for the 12th (Morning Low was a balmy 65F/18.3C); Overall Low-around 11:45PM-listed for the 13th.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for continued somewhat-above-normal temperatures and really no good rainchances until the weekend. As long as the Jet Stream stays to our North, we'll continue to enjoy mild/warmer conditions here.

For the week of Nov. 15-21: Mena's Avg. Max.: 60.0F/15.5C; Avg. Min.: 37.8F/3.2C

Another very mild and mostly dry week. A dry Pacific cold front passed on the 15th (lowering the humidity levels on the following days) and the passage of another Pacific cold front (on the 21st) brought the light shower activity late-week. It's been so mild here lately that I saw a honeybee on the windshield/windscreen of my car on the 18th and I saw a dandelion blooming in my front yard on the 19th. Otherwise, the days featured mostly clear skies with crisp mornings and pleasantly warm afternoons. Overall Low-around 11:35PM-listed for the 15th (Morning Low was 47F/8.3C).
Forecast for upcoming week calls for overall seasonal temperatures with the best rainchances coming early-week & around the weekend.
This Thursday is the Thanksgiving Day holiday here in the US. I'm certainly Very Thankful (to the LORD) for many things; especially Thankful to post here on this Wonderful forum with all you Wonderful & Awesome folks.

For the week of Nov. 22-28: Mena's Avg. Max.: 57.4F/14.1C; Avg. Min.: 35.4F/1.8C

Had 3 Pacific cold fronts roll through in the week--on the 22nd, early AM on the 25th and a dry one on the 27th. Had a bit of excitement on the 24th, as the Tornado Sirens went off in town at 10:43PM, as a thunderstorm cell capable of producing a tornado was located not far to our SW (and moving East). I kept monitoring our local radar and the local scanner. Shortly after, a brief time of pretty gusty winds ensued. There were reports of a few trees toppled in town and a few more trees toppled in rural areas not far to our West (those trees took out a couple powerlines). Thankfully, that was really the extent of any damage, and--as the cell/stormline was moving quickly--the Tornado Warning for our area of Polk County was canceled at 10:55PM. Because of the recent unseasonable warmth, the set-up for severe weather was really Spring-like in looks. The storm-line really didn't look that impressive on doppler radar. Thankful it hit at night, which likely lessened the severity of the cells. We really don't get such powerful thunderstorms at this time of year (late-November) that often in my area.
The 22nd was a day of steadily falling temperatures: Overall High-12:01AM-is listed (Daytime High was 52F/11.1C at the 6:57AM sunrise) & Overall Low-around 11:30PM-is listed; The High on the 25th was at 12:01AM & around 3PM & the Overall Low was around 11:30PM.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for colder temperatures & possible AM snowshowers for Thursday morning. The abnormal & prolonged warm conditions have spoiled us a bit.

For the week of Nov. 29-Dec. 5: Mena's Avg. Max.: 54.8F/12.6C; Avg. Min.: 33.3F/0.7C

This past week was cooler overall with a couple more good raindumps. Vortex of Low-Pressure passing to our South (Pacific cold front) caused the showers on the 29th & another Pacific cold front brought the cold rain mid-week. Abundant sunshine (and calm winds) on the 4th & 5th caused the afternoons to feel somewhat warmer.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for a bit of a warming trend before good showerchances and another cooldown by the weekend.

For the week of Dec. 6-12: Mena's Avg. Max.: 52.3F/11.2C; Avg. Min.: 31.0F/-1.1C

A dry Pacific cold front passed through on the 6th & another Pacific cold frontal passage caused the shower activity in the late-week. Humidity levels dropped off early week, lending to some nice daily temperature spreads. Not a great deal of cloudcover until the lateweek period. Felt much cooler on the 12th; especially with a cool, E/NE breeze.
Overall Low--abt. 11:15PM--listed for the 6th (the Morning Low was 43F/6.1C); Overall Low--abt. 11:30PM--listed for the 11th (the Morning Low was 53F/11.6C).
Forecast for coming week calls for good shower chances--with a possible mix of sleet & snow flurries--early week and temperatures then rebounding to around seasonal levels. Looks like the cooler weather is slowly-but-surely starting to settle in.

For the week of Dec. 13-19: Mena's Avg. Max.: 50.9F/10.5C; Avg. Min.: 29.6F/-1.3C

This last full week of Autumn featured a very chilly week, indeed. The vortex of Low-Pressure (Pacific cold front) passing over my area caused the showers on the 13th; the rain ended as a time of snow flurries (which melted on contact with the ground); the nearby mountains picked up from 1-3" snow and freezing fog caused a glaze on the trees up there. Hopefully this--snowfall before Winter starts--is a good sign that my area may see at least a few good snowdumps this Winter. (Winter officially starts here in the NH on Monday the 21st.) A dry Pacific cold front passed on the 15th--a very cold day, with chilly NW breezes & another Pacific cold front caused the light rain on the 19th. It was sunny and felt warmer (with little wind) on the 17th.
Overall Low--around 11PM--listed for the 19th.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for early-week warmth, with shower chances and cooler weather by mid-week.
I'd like to wish each of you a Very Merry & Blessed Christmas! Looks like yet another "non-White" Christmas for my area this year. It's always interesting to see how close the lying snow gets to my area on Christmas day.

For the week of Dec. 20-26: Mena's Avg. Max.: 50.1F/10.0C; Avg. Min.: 29.3F/-1.5C

This past week had a warm start and cooler finish. Winter officially arrived here in the US/NH on the 21st (I'm glad that the daylight times will now start to become longer). A dry Canadian cold front came through in the evening of the 23rd; the accompanying cold N/NW/WNW breezes lingered through the 24th. The 24th was a cold day, made worse by the gusty & cold winds, which gave Wind Chill values well below freezing for much of the day. Otherwise, the days were mostly sunny, with fair daily temperature spreads.

Friday, December 25, 2020: Merry Christmas! Conditions at 12:01AM at Mena's Intermountain Municipal Airport: Clear--no clouds below 12,000FT; Temp.: 32F/0C; Dew Point: 17F/-8C; Visibility: 10 miles/16.1 kilometers; Wind: 310 degrees (NW) at 7MPH/11.2KPH; (Wind Chill: 25F/-3.8C); Barometer 30.13"/1,020.3hPa

For some reason, the 48 US State High Maximum & Low Minimum Temperatures for Dec. 25th are not listed.

This was another "non-White" Christmas for my area; as per the US Snow Map, the closest lying snow (on Dec. 25th) to my area was in extreme SW Iowa. Forecast for upcoming week calls for fairly seasonal temperatures and by midweek, the shower chances increase, temperatures decrease and we could see wintry precipitation in the AM hours of Thursday morning. Hope Everyone had a Very Merry & Blessed Christmas & I Wish All A Very Happy, Blessed & Prosperous New Year!

For the week of Dec. 27-Jan. 2: Mena's Avg. Max.: 49.3F/9.6C; Avg. Min.: 28.1F/-2.1C

This past week--again--featured a warm start with a very chilly finish and a good & prolonged raindump. Rain--even heard a few thunder rumbles on the 31st, with the temperature around 37F/2.2C--was due to the vortex of Low-Pressure passing to our South (a large rainshield on the north quadrant of the circulation), late-week. Light snow was not far away during the morning of the 1st & morning of the 2nd (light amounts of snow on the nearby mountains); otherwise, the late-week rains felt very cold & especially so, with a chilly NE/NNE wind. It looks like 2020 will end as one of the (officially) wettest-ever years in Mena's history (rain records back to Nov. 1890). The early-week warmth & sunshine felt very good, indeed.
Overall Low-around 11PM-listed for the 27th (Morning Low was 46F/7.7C); Overall High-around 1AM-and Overall Low-around 10:15PM-listed for the 30th (temperatures slowly fell all day; Morning Low was 43F/6.1C & the Daytime High was 51F/10.5C at the 7:23AM sunrise); Overall High-12:01AM-listed for the 31st (Daytime High was 37F/2.7C at the 7:22AM sunrise); Overall Low-around 10:45PM-listed for the 1st.

48 US State High Max.: 87F/30.5C--Clermont, Florida
48 US State Low Min.: -22F/-30.0C--Peter Sinks, Utah

For the week of Jan. 3-9: Mena's Avg. Max.: 49.0F/9.4C; Avg. Min.: 27.6F/-2.4C

Another week with a warm start and a colder finish. The hefty raintotal was from the vortex of a Low-Pressure passing to our South (a fairly large rainshield around the Northern circulation of the Low). Really felt Wintry with the chilly rains and a cool E/NE breeze. Snow was not far away, as the nearby mountains received a few inches of the white stuff. It was cold, but at least sunny the final 2 days of the week.
Overall Low--around 11:30PM--listed for the 8th (the Morning Low was 34F/1.1C).
Forecast for upcoming week calls for (overall) close-to-normal temperatures, a slight cooldown by midweek, with very poor shower chances.

For the week of Jan. 10-16: Mena's Avg. Max.: 49.2F/9.5C; Avg. Min.: 27.4F/-2.5C

This past week--the first completely dry week of 2021--featured typically cool to warmish early-Winter temperatures. A dry Pacific cold front passed through on the 15th--bringing only high cloudcover, but fairly windy conditions (At 11AM on the 15th, the Mena Airport reported a temperature of 44F/6.6C and West winds at 25MPH/40.2KPH [gusting to 31MPH/49.9KPH]; such a long period of gusty winds may be common in other places [like parts of the US Great Plains, etc.,]), but my area is not really all that windy. So glad we don't have such excessively windy conditions here that often. The strong winds abated around nightfall.
Overall--around 11:15PM--listed for the 11th.
Forecast for coming week calls for somewhat above-normal temperatures (minimums more above normal than maximums) and fairly good shower chances, beginning around midweek.
Tomorrow--Monday--is the Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday here in the US.

For the week of Jan. 17-23: Mena's Avg. Max.: 49.2F/9.5C; Avg. Min.: 27.1F/-2.7C

A coolish and somewhat--generally--cloudy/mostly cloudy week. A dry Pacific cold front passed through on the 19th. The light shower activity following was due to the vortex of Low-Pressure passing to our South. All in all, the Winter thus far (just over a month into official Winter season) has been fairly mild. Otherwise, a fairly unremarkable week.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for a warm start (poss. severe weather early week), followed by a cool-down and recovering temperatures afterwards.

Another typical Winter week with variable temperatures. The passage of a couple Pacific cold fronts--on the 25th & 30th--brought the rainfall. Even had thundershowers on the 25th--was good to hear thunder rumbles in the middle of Winter.

For the week of Jan. 31-Feb. 6: Mena's Avg. Max.: 50.7F/10.3C; Avg. Min.: 28.0F/-2.2C

Typical cool Winter week, with a few warmish & mostly sunny days for good measure. Had fairly thick fog until around Noontime on the 4th due to a Warm Front and the afternoon passage of a Pacific cold front. Had a rain/snow mix on the 6th, due to a Canadian cold front (snowflakes melted on contact with the ground here). Nearby higher elevations & the nearby mountains had a couple inches of accumulating snow. It's always interesting to see these Canadian cold fronts, as the colder air oozes southwards like syrup and I like to track the slow-but-steady southward progress of the colder air on the hourly isotherm maps of the US on coolwx.com.
Surprisingly--temperatures only near 55F/12.7C--I did see a fly on the 3rd; it wasn't moving very fast & we usually don't see such until a while later. I also saw a few (American) robins on the 5th--they usually migrate to warmer areas and we don't usually see them around for another few weeks or so.
Overall High-12:01AM & Overall Low-around 11:30PM-listed for the 31st; Overall Low-around 11:25PM-listed for the 4th (the Morning Low was 48F/8.8C); the Low on the 6th was around 1:30PM (during the heaviest of the rain/snow).
Forecast for upcoming week calls for fair shower chances early-week, followed by colder temperatures & fair chances to see some snow, late-week & early next week. Bring On The Snow!

Hello Folks:
Well some grim news to report: An icestorm hit the DFW area overnight (Wed.-Thur.) and early this morning, there was an icy pileup on I-35W in Fort Worth, TX. At least 65+ vehicles were involved and a total of 5 fatalities. I saw--on the Weather Channel--footage of this pileup in progress, and it was horrible footage to see (as a number of big-rigs were involved as well). Most Thankfully, the freezing rain mostly missed my area. My thoughts & prayers are with all those impacted.

YouTube footage (shot by driver in opposite lane) of the pileup as it happened. WARNING: This footage is terrible & hard to watch, as big-rigs slam into cars.

Hello Folks:
The reason the folks in the above video I posted were going so fast down I-35W is due to the fact that the folks driving hadn't encountered any freezing rain/black ice to the north of there (and were driving at normal speed); and this patch of "black ice" only formed around 5 minutes before the pileup (this scenario was explained on the Weather Channel). There were at least 133 vehicles involved.

That *was* hard to watch.

I’m guessing that by the time the pile up becomes visible it’s too late to brake any because you’re already on the black ice.

Most all those vehicles looked like they made no effort to brake - which can’t possibly be the case.

That was just scary. The speed there on the I-35 is 70mph /110kph.
My GF lives 250km south of there in Austin.... she had 6-7mm of ice on bushes and trees. Could get worse, as the overnight temperatures in Austin look like hitting -16C on Monday night.
High pressure over Oklahoma is directing cold air 2500km down from Canada

It’s a solid winter over there. I heard Oklahoma river in OKC has frozen over, which may be a first. And the locals may have to wait a week before it warms up enough just to get back up to freezing point....insane. They will be looking forward to tornado season.

Hello Folks:
Many Thanks for your interest & input.
Yes, this looks to be a historic cold wave & I'm sure a Plethora of cold temperature records (Date records for Lowest Maximums & Minimums) will be smashed over the coming days.
My town of Mena is forecasted to have a low of -2F/-18.8C on Monday night; if so, it would be the coldest temperature here since we bottomed out at -7F/-21.6C on Dec. 24, 1989. Mena has had only 3 mornings of below 0F/below -17.7C lows since 1989. It'll DEF be a shock to the system, as Mena's lowest temperature in 2020 was only 19F/-7.2C and 19F/-7.2C has been the lowest temperature here thus far in 2021.
The long multi-day stretch of sub-freezing temperatures--which we don't have often here--will cause me to leave all my faucets (inside & outside) dripping (to prevent the pipes from freezing & bursting), which is also something that's done not very often here. There has been an unusually long stretch of solid cloudcover (over a week now) here & I'm more-than-ready to see sunshine.
Will be interesting to see what happens.

Hello Big T & Greetings to you: That is actually the North Canadian River. A 7-mile/11-kilometer portion of the river flowing through OKC was named the Oklahoma River in 2004. That section of the river is not all that wide and deep. I've not been able to find whether the river had frozen over in OKC before. Have A Good One!

Hello Richard & Greetings To You: As I stated earlier, these motorists encountered no "black ice" to their north & this patch of ice only formed shortly before the pileup. Also, applying brakes on ice is just about the worst thing one can do--doing such can not only cause the vehicle (big rig/car) to lose control, but also cause the vehicle to accelerate in speed.
Also, the mindset of people in DFW/Texas to drive fast everywhere they go, is likely another factor. So, even though the roads were clear in the areas they were driving before the "black ice" formed, they were not driving as cautiously as they should have (esp. on an elevated section of the Interstate).

Hello Folks:
Just to elaborate a bit more on the deadly DFW pileup. Those lanes are the express (toll) lanes part of I-35; and as such are owned by a private company, and TXDot (Texas Dept. of Transportation) did not treat these lanes (chemical to slow the formation of ice), because those lanes are owned by a private company who owns the toll express lanes. Sounds like some negligence somewhere.

For the week of Feb. 7-13: Mena's Avg. Max.: 52.6F/11.4C; Avg. Min.: 29.5F/-1.3C

Well, "Old Man Winter" is really putting the hammer down on my area & quite a bit of the US, lately. If the frigid temperatures weren't enough here, we've had solid cloudcover since the 6th (we did see very brief peeks of sunshine near sunset on the 13th, before the clouds thickened). Such a long stretch of multi-day solid cloudiness is not very common here. Although nothing really fell from the sky, there was a bit of fog on a few of the mornings. Today (Sunday) we've seen a bit of snow (around an inch or so thus far, with more to come) and temperatures around 20F/-7C or a bit below & Wind Chills near 0F/-17C (we don't see such low Wind Chills here that often as our coldest temperatures are usually with calm winds). Below ZeroF Wind Chills are extending pretty far south in the US as this Arctic airmass expands. Even places like Houston, TX are in for an icestorm and some snowfall (as virtually all of Texas--even far south Texas and places such as Del Rio, Laredo & Brownsville are in a Winter Storm Warning). We here have been below freezing since around sunrise (just after 7AM) on the 10th and we will likely not get above freezing until sometime this coming Friday (according to our forecast by Intellicast).
Overall High-12:01AM-listed for the 9th; Overall High-12:01AM & Overall Low-around 7:30PM-listed for the 10th (as the temperature slowly fell all day); Overall High-12:01AM-(Daytime High was 28F/-2.2C around 9:30AM) & Overall Low-around 10PM-listed for the 11th.
I'm not sure of the most consecutive hours (or days) that Mena has stayed below freezing, but--what we've had thus far & what is forecasted--this would likely rank near the top.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for frigid arctic temperatures and good chances for snow early-week and mid-week and temperatures to finally get above freezing by Friday. Will be interesting to see all the records that'll get smashed in the coming days. Some good "hibernating" days for sure. It's times like this that I Really wish I was in Australia!

I bet you are getting sick of it. I heard a couple of things today. The entire states of OK and TX are under winter storm warnings, that's a first. And a cool one for okc, tomorrow's Max temp will break their low temp record for that day. Don't even need to mention what the low temp will do to that record..awesome stuff whilst looking on from afar. Wet.snow,,how far is mena from okc? Not that far I imagine....

Hello Big T (& All):
Many Thanks for that. Yes, some mind-blowing temperatures, indeed. For sure, this long stretch of cloudiness is something I really dislike (& can be somewhat depressive). The cool temperatures (not like the excessively frigid ones we have now) are OK with me, as long as we have good chances to see some snow (I don't really care for the really low Wind Chill readings)....But it's always interesting to experience record-breaking weather, first hand.
As to your question: The straight-line distance from Mena, AR to Oklahoma City, OK is right around 200 miles/320+ kilometers. (Interestingly, the elevation of Mena is 1,177FT/358.8M ASL & OKC's elevation is 1,201FT/366.1M ASL).

Some places in Texas have broken low temp records. DFW airport recorded a Max temp of -10c on Monday. It'll be interesting to see if it gets into negative Fahrenheit temps tonight (first time since 1989). Quite an event.

Yes, 1989 was the last large & deep cold snap for my area as well.
Had around 3.5" snow here today (Monday) for a total of around 4.5" for the event. Our low this morning was 0F/-17.7C and although we had sunny conditions by afternoon, our high was only around 10F/-12.2C--with Wind Chills near -10F/-23.3C. We are forecasted to dip below zeroF in the morning & another batch of snow is forecasted for Wednesday & we might get back above freezing by Friday.

Wet snow,,what's your favourite season / time of year over there in mena?
Greetings Big T & All: Well--for different reasons, I like each season...but if I had to pick one, I like Summer. Reason being, I'm fairly cold-natured & I like the warmth (but not the often high accompanying humidity) that Summer offers. I like getting outside & doing various yardwork in the warm sunshine (which makes my joints feel better & more limber).

I'd like to ask each of you: What is your favorite season & why. Thanks!

Many Thanks for sharing these interesting pics. Yes, I'm all too aware of what freezing rain & ice can do and if enough of it falls, you can get widespread damage of all kinds; not to mention travel delays & power outages.
I do hope (& pray) that your GF avoided any major damage or power outages. Best Wishes.

Hello Wonderful Friends:
Well, what a (Frigid) morning!
Mena bottomed out (officially) at -14F/-25.5C this (Tue.) morning. Mena's All-Time Lowest Minimum is -15F/-26.1C on Feb. 12, 1899--which is the last time we've been this cold. To give you an idea of how rare this is: Since 1891, Mena has only had 28 Mornings with Below ZeroF/below -17.7C minimums (Mena had no mornings of Below ZeroF minimums from all of 1990 through all of 2017).
Also, the Maximum yesterday (Mon.) in Mena was only 9F/-12.7C; the All-Time Record Low Maximum in Mena is 6F/-14.4C also on Feb. 12, 1899--which is the last time we've had a lower maximum.
Mena's Airport (Intermountain Municipal Airport)--reporting hourly, unofficial temperatures), reported Below Zero temperatures from 11PM on Feb. 15 through 7AM today (the 16th).
I won't know by what margin that Mena has smashed records lately, for a few days. But if you're going to break records, you might as well smash them!!!
Also this morning: Clarksville (Johnson County) bottomed out at -15F/-26.1C and both the towns of Gilbert (Newton County) and Nashville (Howard County) had minimums of -14F/-25.5C.

A bit like yourself, I like all seasons for varying reasons. Fav would be autumn as the heat of summer has gone, the sun is still warm but the breeze on your face is cool. The ocean is perfect temp for swimming , surfing and the landscape is lush . Enjoy winter as I do like a bit of cold, but our winter here is so mild. Spring for the usual storm season, and summer for lazing by the pool with a beer.

Thanks Much for that, Big T:
To elaborate on my likes for the other seasons: I like Spring, as everything comes back to life: the (non-evergreen) trees fill out with leaves, the grass turns green again & flowers/trees are in bloom everywhere and the songbirds return. The thing I detest about our Summer is being pestered by flies, ticks & (twin-engined) mosquitoes. I love our Autumn/Fall as the tree leaves are undergoing the color-change and are a beautiful display of different colors (a number of tour buses--full of "leaf-lookers" come through my area then); and the surrounding mountains are more beautiful than ever. I get a little depressed when it gets later into Autumn, as the warm days are numbered and the daylight times decline (but I'm happy that it's nearing Football/Gridiron season). I love Winter only for the prospect of a good snowdump (a number of weather-factors have to be just right for snowfall to happen in my area; so it's really a hit-or-miss prospect); but we've just as good a chance of seeing freezing rain--which I highly dislike.
Have A Good One!

Kind Wishes--Take Care--Stay Safe--GOD Bless~~~Wet Snow

Does she have power?
I understand a lot of the coal and gas plants have frozen up and there's problems with the load sharing equipment due to the cold.

I have a good friend who lives in a Dallas suburb and he said that there are "rolling blackouts" in the DFW metroplex. A percentage of their electricity comes from wind turbines, most of which have frozen-up due to the cold & icy conditions. Some folks have been without power so long that (Weather Channel footage shot by a motorist) some folks are in their cars with the heaters on, trying to keep warm. Sounds pretty bad in places.
