but you can ski an awful lot of time at a resort before you even know it all...

I have a buddy used to work at Breck for a long time... he is always showing us new lines there.... I have a date to ski with him just after I arrive... and I know he will show us more good places...

I agree with all that LT..I just use skiing as an excuse to travel...I'm not big on frescos and museums.
I often wonder what the Northern Hemisphere would look like with grass and flowers and leaves on the trees.

    2004 overnight in the hut/lodge
    Big snow
    Great Weather
In essence an area about the size of Ohau accessible off the top of the nutcracker...with 10 people on the field.
As with everything...timing is the key.
If you can do it...do it.

paedde - is the Canyons now known as something else, perhaps Park City West?

I have always wanted to ski there

Paedde needs to ski Oz. That northern hemisphere snow is great for beginners, but only a fully grown skier can make Oz conditions look good.

I’m just waiting for the start of the endless debate on how to count resorts. I might push it sometimes but then again others could be taken as two or more. E.g. Sun Alpina Hakuba you can buy one ticket only for Sun Alpina or a combined one for 3 resorts, or ski only one at the time. There are many more especially in Europe and also in the US like Aspen….

Don't think I am "ticker" - have not skiied in enough areas to be defined as one :)
If I find I like a place, I will stick with it for a while (ie. Whistler for the season, ditto for Breck, etc).......much easier to find "good spots" for those fresh tracks.....

I mentioned the same issue in my earlier post. Basically I think it is almost impossible to make clear distinctions so I just gave up on the idea.

    A few examples :

Perisher & Guthega were seperate when I skied them. Now it is all Perisher Blue.

Niseko - in the 90's Hirafu had two lift systems, plus Higashiyama & Annupuri were all seperate, Hanazono didn't exist. Now it's all covered by one ticket.

    Aspen - 4 different mountains.

    Whistler / Blackcomb

Porties du Soliel region - a dozen or so villages over two countries with associated ski areas all interlinked under one lift pass.

Chamonix valley - multiple ski areas.

    Arlberg ski region

Ski Amade region over 3 Austrian provinces.

The Dolomiti region covers a huge area with many towns and ski areas that aren't linked very well at all, so you need a car to get around, but you can get a ski pass to cover all of them.

Davos, Zermatt & plenty others - towns with a number of distinct ski areas.

Then heliskiing - from Wanaka for example you can fly into a number of different mountain ranges on any one day - Harris, Buchanans, McKerrors, Minarets, Tyndall glacier..

So trying to count becomes a futile exercise and waste of time. Just enjoy the skiing and the memories.

I agree, I've just counted them as major 'resort areas', eg Perisher/Guthega/Smiggins were separate areas when I first skied them, same with Beaver Creek and Arrowhead, Aspen is one resort - although I've never skied Buttermilk, and Chamonix is at least 5 separate ski areas AFAIK.

Some of them are great places, but for me what is there can be found elsewhere, and better. If I ever went back to Canada it would be to the smaller interior BC resorts. Although, I might be tempted back to Breck, but only to ski the new chair.

Sort of, but it goes quite a bit higher than the old T-bar. Same area, but you can ski a lot more of it without hiking, from the new chair. Like the top of North Bowl, and the Lake Chutes.

I remember Park West (didn't go there the two times I went to Park City) before there was the Canyons. You passed it before getting to Park City. Park West was redeveloped, and became The Canyons.

After Paedde's and Heinz list (and few others [IMG] ) it is sort of hard to put modest list up, but oh well, many years to come yet!

Australia: NSW (I'd love to go to Victorian Alps, but it's easy to drive down to Perisher, Thredbo and save the money for N. hemisphere winter trips... I will go soon though!)

NZ: Mt. Hutt ( very short and hasty trip, but it was great!)

    Europe:

    Switzerland- St. Moritz

    Austria- St.Anton

Slovenia- somewhere [IMG] cannot remeber the
name - it was some years ago..

    France- Chamonix (short trip though)

    Slovakia- Nizka & Vysoka Tatra

    Canada: Whistler&Blackomb

    Japan: Hakuba area

( and we also climbed -or attempted to- mountain in central Anatolia in Turkey and were sliding down in the snow on the way back- would that count? [IMG] )

There were cheap airfares not long ago... $1200 or so...

Europe and Japan - I'm jealous now!

I am continually looking for new resorts to go to as well as revisiting my favourites, and I don't consider myself a ticker.

As well as the obvious new ski terrain, a new resort can bring a new great city to fly in to, cute town to stay in, sensational scenery you haven't seen before, quality microbrew you haven't tasted before, culture you haven't experienced etc...

I'm skiing Turoa & Whakapapa in September for the first time. With all the bad weather they get, I'm going for 10 days & not prebooking anything so that I can ski on the good days & on the others see some of the surrounding areas including the Hawkes Bay wine area. Skiing new areas is a great way for travellers to see areas of the world they haven't seen before.

To me a ticker infers the person is materialistic, more interested in "keeping up with the Jones' " than actually skiing the new area.

I have three reasons to travel:
    -Skiing
    -Diving
    -None of the above

    -Sking is obvious,
-diving I'm as white as a arctic circle dude. so wetsuits rule and these days I love a great beach-off to Spadan and Layang in April
-The third, I love to travel and see stuff.

I will never ever match Heinz and Paedee, but meanwhile I will go to belize, the Karakoram, see the Gorilla's and a GP in Monaco-for starters.

Paedde, I'm confused. You made it to freakin snowdomes in Germany, Holland & Belgium.

But you haven't skied the Chamonix resorts or Val D'Isere or 3 Valleys??? Even though they are only a two hour drive from where you live, and in most people's global Top 10??

Do you dislike France, or did these just not make the Top 125 resorts you want to ski?

Add Zao, Shizukuishi, Iwate Kogen, Appi Kogen and some other place to my list.

On the subject of ticking - I prefer to call it field research for the benefit of the ski.com.au community. A bit of a chore, but someone has to do it.

Impressed that snopixie has skiied Manganui and go native gets massive cred for Tongariro and Nguaruhoe , not least for spelling them correctly.
    Volcano cam
Surprising how many people have only done one NZ or Japanese island.
All shows how many snow addicts lurk about though. Surfers and mountain climbers suffer
    similar travelling addictions/afflictions I suppose.
    Is there a cure?
Nobody has done Tukino? (also on Ruapehu)..keep meaning to get there. Apparently the rope tows are friendly!
(Solemn ski.com oath:"This year I will go there and post some pics.")

Ha, So someone else has tackled the mighty steeps of Olympic Park in Calgary. [IMG]

My excuse was I got a free outing there. I revisited a family I stayed with for the 1988 games and their kids had a school outing there. I was able to tag along as a 'stand in parent'.
