I received an email from Mountain Designs today.

"We’ve been off on our own adventure but the spirit of ’75 is reborn. Staying true to our original quality & functionality, we’re almost ready to share where we’ve been.

    New range coming soon,
    Team Mountain Designs"

Lets see if they can stay true to these words and continue to make quality clothes and gear.

Must have taken "Spotlight" longer than expected to sure up Chinese manufacturing at the right price and then new locations/leases at again the right price?

I was thinking the same. It's a long time for a brand to be out of the market place. I think MD was Kathmandu's biggest competitor and with out them around, it seems like Kathmandu's prices have gone up and sales are less often.

Be interesting to see if they re-brand or just use all the old shop fittings in storage?
Was the logo the same on the email?

Mmmmmm, maybe negotiating with Aldi for a new range? LOL
    or
hellova lotta space in those spotlight stores (quilting section must be almost gone as most quilters can't see anymore). LOL
P.S. Full luv to the quilters! My mother in law has won prizes for quilting excellence! LOL
    True!
Sth American made quilts winning prizes in USA! Legend!!!
Many of the fabrics came from here (sent to her as a present) as it's just too expensive to buy there due to import taxes.

    Yes!
I forgot that Spotlight owns them as well..................makes perfect sense.
    HOMEBRAND.........no middle man.
I know of a "high profile" brand who has not liked Anaconda's discounting of their brand (thus lowering their product value) and they expect to no longer supply them, so maybe that void would be filled?

There are many suppliers who won't deal with Anaconda or the other big outdoors chains (BCF, Rays etc) for that very reason. The big chains also demand huge discounts from their suppliers, and then just absorb that into their margin, unless it's a loss leader, or a 'sale' item.

While nothing to do with Mountain Designs, check out Aussie Hero Quilts. They make quilts and laundry bags for deployed ADF members, families of deceased members and quilts for use by patients in the military hospitals in Kabul and Taji (Iraq). They also have started doing quilts for some emergency services personnel. I got sent one when I was in Kabul. They are really special for those of us who got one.

Just had a look at their range.

WTF, no decent mountain shell gear. That was some of their best product. I was a fan of the old Mountain Designs because they made really good quality gear. I've still got one of their fleece vests which is about 20 years old and still going strong. Their puffies were also super quality.

    We'll see how they go.

Well when Rick White was in charge of design that was true. The company went downhill fast when he died and MD started ignoring their core customers and chased the quick tourist/traveler dollars. I still have my big down parka, it's just that I seem to have grown a bit since I bought it

They did maintain it for a while after Rick passed away. That was actually their downfall or part of it as Kathmandu were on the rise and making cheaper gear that punters thought was the same quality, so market share started dropping and they jumped on the bandwagon with lower quality product. They also lost some focus trying to distribute other brands and a few other issues.
