That's a first world problem right there:

"I'm just not rich enough to be able to afford to ski overseas, but I am rich enough to pay mountain entry fees".

Well this is what we get when we let ALDI sell cheap ski gear...

People have a choice where they spend their money and as I have never ski'd/boarded here you could consider me a potential punter/customer on Buller.
well guess what, first impression is **** YOU BULLER. and I'm sure that ain't what any business would want to hear from potential customers before they have even set foot on the mountain.
Unless I get up there and it blows me away, (which it won't) I am going to come back down the mountain and say "i had a good day's boarding but I'm not coming back and I'm going to reccomend people go elsewhere if they're looking for a destination.

Buller is not the sort of mountain that welcomes people who have to count their loose change. It's just not the right vibe.

I'd happily pay $40 to not step out of the car into shin deep mud at the Treble Cone carpark.

Unless I'm Norman-no-mates, that Buller tax is $10 each. I remember having to pay $25 pp just to leave NZ after a ski trip in departure tax!

Try Thredbo National Parks pass at $25/day or $260/year.
    Perisher skitube, $60 return??
Charlottes Pass over snow, $40 each +$10/bag??

Maybe you've chosen the wrong pastime? Try squash, no weather variability or unknown costs.

I reckon the 40 bucks a day shocks every single person from another skiing country. I don't enjoy paying it.
Hell, if my taxes are going to pay for a bunch of Shiite I don't need like mega tunnels, wars in iraq etc they might as well subsidise my riding.

To the OP, in some ways, if you're going up to Buller for a week, it's easier to park in Mansfield(or Mirimbah) and catch the bus up. No entry fee, no parking fees. $56-$62 return.

Be a solution thinker, not a problem thinker.

This thread is gold, thx for the lols.

I'll be in Melbourne on the 15th and will likely be looking for a ride up to Buller for the weekend. Happy to split costs, hell I'll even buy your cheap ass lunch (a small fortune) and a beer, if it helps you to stop being so miserable.....which may be a difficult task once you look up accommodation costs

riff-raff out? have you checked out the toboggan area/Bourke St lately? I don't think this is working!

Firmly in the "it's a rort" camp here as stated - it's not just a rort to foreigners but locals too.

Never mind the BS about what it pays for, when the Gov't made National Park entry free, they should've included the Alpine resorts.

I keep copping it (@ hotham not buller$hit) as I want to ski. I minimise the damage by carpooling and splitting costs with mates. As Aussies are generally stand-offish carpooling with strangers is yet to take up here so it's difficult to do if your mates aren't around when you want to go to the hill. I won't pay ~ $180 in fuel and gate entry combined to go up by myself nowadays - conditions here generally aren't good enough to justify. Lift tix are bought selectively - of 7 days on mtn this year, I've bought 2 lift tickets.

There is definitely still an entry fee on the bus. I think it is $18 per bus passenger included in your ticket price. I looked at the bus from Mirimbah for a day trip but it is more than driving up solo! But yes would make sense going up for a week.
