So there's around 5000 beds at Falls? Plus day trippers, people staying at Mt Beauty.... A town smaller than that would have permanent a police force

But this will lead to artificially lowered crime statistics which will make old people feel safer.

    Good for votes.

what I've heard - may or may not be true
    • they will staff the alpine police stations some of the time (this might mean only weekends)
    • the reason is that the 2-up policy means that that they need more officers to cover the same shifts
whatever the reason, it is ludicrous to rely on police coming from off-mountain if there is a problem. mt beauty police station is often unmanned and getting a response from wangaratta has been very frustrating for some people. even with the best of intentions, there is no guarantee that police can actually get up the mountain if there is a big tree down or rockfall. and don't rely on choppers in alpine weather either.

don't know if this is police mgt playing funny buggers to embarrass the government or if the government has had a hand in the lunacy. either way, the minister needs to get it sorted out pronto

attached is a copy of a letter to the minister co-signed by the RMB CEOs from Falls, Hotham & Buller

Yeah, a great spot for stumbling home from the Genny, hearing all about how good DJ eddy was when everyone gets kicked out at 1am, getting covered in dust from the road, having a million day trippers outside your front door all winter and cars going past all day and night.

    Not such a great buy.

I have a couple of photos and a short video of one of the Mt Beauty policemen, Jason I think, on a callout a couple of years ago. Someone called the police because a pony had escaped from a paddock! The pony was tracked down and returned to his owner. My wife also reported to the police officer that she had seen a limping sheepdog go past and he said he would keep an eye open for it. A typical day in Mt Beauty perhaps, it was like an episode of " A country Practice". Jason liked Mt Beauty so much, he bought a house. Hope he's not on ski.com!

Police are needed mainly as the agency co-ordinating rescues. Crime on the mountains is very low, even if you factor in a few people who've had snow gear stolen. This despite there being a number of liquor licenced premises. Not sure why they're needed in that region for medical and paramedic support its not afaik a risky place to work in those jobs unlike in city areas where drugs are extensively available and used.

Theft of an old bicycle is a crime wave in mt beauty. It a joke when they started up neighborhood watch because we have one of the lowest crime rates in the state.

We had some serious crimes: a murder, a bashing as part of a spate of burglaries, some arson, and some big drug crop busts, but these are very infrequent. We also get vandalism, usually associated with weekends when there are a lot of visitors in town.

Mt Beauty however is not Falls Creek. Falls Creek needs a winter police presence more than we do in the valley

Drunk/iced up idiots is the main reason I'd want a permanent police presence at Buller, on top of that equipment theft and also drink driving are 2 other strong reasons.

Plus just the deterrent factor of a visible presence.

I think Jindy has more 'drunk and iced-up idiot' issues than the Vic resorts combined.

Yes Jindabyne has that knuckle dragger party culture somehow more than the other (Vic) resorts where it's a small minority. As for drugs, there's a minority who want to get out of it and may see drug use as cheaper and/or more efficient based on the costs of going out to drink. We do have high liquor taxes compared to overseas.

But the doctors up the mountains said they won't accept patients after 5pm if the Police go. Bad for injured skiers and others

Not sure I'm a fan of this idea.

Have seen a ton of drug use in the victorian snow fields.
Not to mention the odd fight too. Keep 2 police there. It's needed.
If there's no police and people know it, its going to become open season. Time to invest in a better board lock i think.

yes surely common sense will prevail here, how can towns of around 5-10000 be without police who would be 1 hour away ,
Not only that , its the specialist skills that are required that go with it , including vehicles , search and rescue , cold climate , etc .
    This is crazy

They are not licenced crowd controllers nor are they a sworn officer of the law.
So they cannot lay hands on.

The cops stationed at Falls don't do that as far as I know. The cops at Mt beauty and from wang do.

I can promise you Patrollers want the Police there as much as (and probably more than) the rest of you.
A few quotes here relate to allegedly low crime rates (NOT true) and low drug use (Def. not true) in the resorts.
But cast your views 'inside' resort operations and think of these additional points:

    • 1) Its typical for at least 2 groups DAILY to 'lose' a number of members due to poor communications/planning/etc. This comes to Ski Patrol and if the police were not there to check the car parks, pubs, etc. this would escalate to became a huge drain on resort manpower. Patrols and RMB's don't have the resources to deal with these problems.
    • When all the above fails and we have a real missing-person, under legislation it is VicPol who must be the lead agency..It may be true that Patrollers may 'lead' the terrain search, but the Police can call on significant additional resources like Helicopters (infrared search), Police S&R, etc, etc. As you all know, deaths due to being lost are not uncommon, and could significantly increase if we lose the immediate police presence.
    • Actual physical violence/threats (on-snow and after-hours) are more common than most of you think, and without the Police, there is NO authority who can (or wants to) intervene.
    • Motor vehicle vandalism and criminal property damage is again much more prevalent than widely perceived - the police play a major role in apprehension, prevention, getting insurance claims, etc.
If you wish to believe that Patrollers (and even RMB staff) are on some kind of 'power trip', then nothing will change that, but it's not generally true in my 26 years (and 36 seasons) experience. Indeed without Police support our roles will be much harder.

Notwithstanding all of the above, I'd LOVE to drive that cannon!!!

So set up a community police in the resort. Staff it with local volunteers and offer serving cops a free season pass in exchange for wearing the jacket and carrying a radio when skiing on days off. The great majority of stuff police do in a ski resort is community related rather than criminal. You have trained SES for backcountry search. Canadian resorts like Big White with 20,000 beds on hill don't bother with RCMP detachment at the mountain, just a storefront office for volunteers to man that also becomes a base of operations when officers come up to answer an incident call. I don't think there's anything wrong with sorting the calls and having the cops only deal with genuine police matters.

Not that hard, you just need to buddy up with ski patrol at a resort with an avalanche control program. A season or two and you should be doing ridealongs with them on pow days. Got to do it a few times back in the early 90s, blowing up snow is a lot of fun.

mmm. Jindabyne policing consists of road side drug testing in the congested centre of town, adding an hour or so to the trip to the snow resorts. Famous fark ups in that regard.

Maybe displaced Vic cops could apply for a northern transfer for the Winter, holed up at the Lake Jindy Hotel fine accomms and get on to the snow fields and bust those nasty young people consuming questionable substances at will. :)

ABC radio this morning said that it has been agreed to provide same on mountain staffing as last season. Actual station hours yet to be agreed. I take this as meaning they will be avail 24/7 for emergencies but station hours may be shorter.

A sentiment I usually agree with.

But on mountain staffing, at least at FC, has nothing to do with rbt and rarely to do with other roadside checks.

Read the title and imagined some big mechanical arm (with chook feeding action) extending from the Vic Mountains to police stations down on the lowlands.
