    Hi guys,

I'm originally a kiwi, but haven't been there since I was a kid. I'm 30 now (too old for working visas and mountains have hired) and my career hasn't really flourished for a variety of reasons and realised skiing is really important to me. Don't want kids etc, but got a dog so I can be reasonably selfish.

I'd really like to live in Jackson Hole, Revelstoke or Chamonix but there is no chance of living earning half decent $$ - wish I was a doctor or engineer.... So New Zealand it is :( .... Like Wanaka more than Queenstown. Find the on piste in NZ a bit boring but only been to TC and I think MT. But the ski touring is awesome...

Anyway, trained as a lawyer at uni, recently got a decent job paying 80k in Melb doing 9-5 which I lost which sucks. Too old to be a lifty/guide/ski patrol etc so going to look at NZ Govt, either council or federal jobs . I heard the money is absolutely terrible compared to Aus.... Just want to save a bit and go overseas skiing for three weeks... Cycling is my other passion.

    Any tips ?

PS I'd rather die than live in Auckland btw - horrible place. No public transport, people are bike unfriendly.

Move this to Conversation perhaps? Mods?

NZ is awesome in Wanaka or Queenstown. The jobs tend to be lower paying if factoring exchange rates.

Probably best in NZ sub forum.
Wanaka / Queenstown - great places to visit but expensive places to live, so you will want to expand the choices
Several NZ posters who will have some good advice on relative merits on NZ towns in the region.

Depends if your serious about getting into the industry. Do you have enough money to buy a house when you get here. If your paying rent you'll be pushing you know what uphill forever.

Are you kidding ! Wanaka probably the most expensive place in NZ. Don't think so. My uncle has a house there though.... :)
Never got that rent money is dead money when you can invest in high quality shares....

I live in Auckland because there are way more and higher paying jobs than anywhere else, especially in my profession. Ridiculous house price/rents don't affect me because I already own. I live 15 mins from the airport and I can fly into Queenstown in less than $300 return in 1.5 hrs (most of the time). You could probably do similar from Wellington. You could drive from Christchurch, plus Canterbury has is own ski fields. Another advantage of Auckland is all the international flights leave from here (for your japow ski trips).

If I wasn't in Auckland I would probably go for Christchurch given there are still a lot of jobs plus you could do weekend trips skiing in Canturbury and easy access to Southern lakes area for longer trips.

Have you seen the rental prices in Queenstown and Wanaka? people are paying $300+ per week for a room in a share house if they can find one. I am in Cromwell and if you can find one the rentals start at $400 for a three bedroom but people are offering $100 to $200 extra to try and get something.
Wages are slightly less and cost of living especially in Central Otago is much higher. Like a lot of NZ you have t wait for someone to die to get a good job as people hang on to the good ones. There are quite a few opportunities for trades here and residential building project managers and quantity surveyors other than that it's mostly minimum wage stuff.
I would suggest coming over for a few weeks, look at job opportunities, try to rent a house and then make the call.

Wanaka is pretty much the most expensive place you could live in NZ beside Franz Josef. Petrol is insane, Food is worse. Rents are slightly better than QT. Jobs are a more common in QT, Houses are not. wages are not at all high.

Endless streams of drunken aussie revelers in court though so if you wanted to be a criminal defence lawyer youd do alright in QT.

You could live cheaper in Manukau if needing to rent in Auckland area. Manukau also offers fast access to the airport.

What area of law do you specialise in? A lot of work in qtown, but you'd do better financially in Dunedin or Invercargill.

Yeah, do not want to live in Auckland - might as well work in Melbourne at make way more....

Ah Red Switch - The law I specialise in is commercial and litigation (not property :( ), but I don't care what law I do if I can stay in Queenstown or Wanaka.. Criminal defence or property, would be interesting to learn new things ...Don't like Dunedin too much...

But Christchurch ? It seems ok with good MTBing ? But I don't like skiing Mt Hutt that much... 1st world problems.

    So it's looking
    1. Wanaka
    2. Queenstown
    3. Christchurch -

Just dreaming of good skiing and MTB less than 30 mins away.

Easily achievable if you don't stop for kids, traffic lights or any other sort of obstruction ! Glorious !

It does seem curious to be providing advice as who to use to facilitate a relocation in response to a 4 year old query.
