Went up yesterday, not quite sure what to expect. Very pleasantly surprised by snow conditions as well as weather. Mountain staff wanted to check my chains in the car park, an indication of some of the issues they have had this year. The 3 main lifts were running, full cover apart from a couple of rocks and patches at the top of Maltese. Gauge on Summit run showed 65-70cm. V good side country through the trees on skiers right top of Maltese. Almost no-one about, despite Wicked Wednesday, so I pretty much had Champagne to myself after lunch. It did soften up early but Qst 92s coped with the conditions nicely. I took the xc trail from summit look-out to 5 ways junction, then beyond. Full cover untouched apart from some boot tracks right up the middle (who'd have thought ?) A few patches were appearing along the summit tow path in the afternoon and the melt water was gurgling away. Faint echoes of a fat lady singing through the snow gums but great spring skiing, sunscreen required. Make the most of it, folks.
I too did hear a faint sound of a fat lady singing out on the Baw Baw Plateau on Tuesday this week. It must have been my imagination, since no fat lady was to be seen. There are many bald patches appearing in many places out there and the sound of running water flowing under the snow pack could be heard in many places.
