Went up yesterday, not quite sure what to expect. Very pleasantly surprised by snow conditions as well as weather. Mountain staff wanted to check my chains in the car park, an indication of some of the issues they have had this year. The 3 main lifts were running, full cover apart from a couple of rocks and patches at the top of Maltese. Gauge on Summit run showed 65-70cm. V good side country through the trees on skiers right top of Maltese. Almost no-one about, despite Wicked Wednesday, so I pretty much had Champagne to myself after lunch. It did soften up early but Qst 92s coped with the conditions nicely. I took the xc trail from summit look-out to 5 ways junction, then beyond. Full cover untouched apart from some boot tracks right up the middle (who'd have thought ?) A few patches were appearing along the summit tow path in the afternoon and the melt water was gurgling away. Faint echoes of a fat lady singing through the snow gums but great spring skiing, sunscreen required. Make the most of it, folks.

I too did hear a faint sound of a fat lady singing out on the Baw Baw Plateau on Tuesday this week. It must have been my imagination, since no fat lady was to be seen. There are many bald patches appearing in many places out there and the sound of running water flowing under the snow pack could be heard in many places.

"Diesel engines control engine speed and power output by throttling the amount of fuel injected into the engine. A diesel has no air throttle. Because it has no air throttle, a diesel engine offers virtually no engine braking when the driver lifts off the accelerator pedal."
Engine braking is then produced by turbo vanes. Even a second hand turbo is gonna hurt. Ouch !
Engine braking is much better with Diesel .

Turbo, yes. Spinning at 100,000 rpm. Variable pitch blades makes them more fragile. Use with due regard to this.
Disobeyed my own edict : "Never be in a hurry to drive down a mountain" due to icefall.
$4000 for repair by dealer.
$400 for second hand turbo (includes exhaust manifold), fit it myself. (big job).
Be warned.

BOM are also on board for this late season snowfall .
The resort shuts its shop on Sunday 6/10/19. So any rock hopping up there will be free if one goes on Wed. next week, but the lifts will be shut so herringboning back up the slopes will be necessary or take kicker skins as an add on to pattern based skis.
It looks tempting for one last rock hopper slide on Wed. 9/10/19.

For Baw Baw regulars: What is road access like during green season when it snows? Is it graded to keep it open? What about carrying chains?

I can see from the cams that the roads in the village itself are open, people are driving through the snow.

Below freezing tonight and tomorrow night so better not to arrive in the dark.
2WD with chains and care OK from the entry about 10 am.
Snow from 800 meters so on South Face Road more snow could make it slow.
But I could be wrong...
Not bad for a zero base :)

I am tossing up whether to go up there tomorrow with the rock hoppers or not. I have lost my manic single purpose ski season momentum...… but I still love XC skiing and would like another day on planks this year .

We went and XC skied at Baw Baw on 9/10/19 in the hunt for white October. It was a real bonus finale to the 2019 Nordic Ski season.
I shall return and ski some of the downhill runs on my NNN BC gear in 2020, with a cheap lift ticket on a Wednesday,Plus do some more B.C. XC ski touring on the BB plateaux.

Look how far my old classic rock hoppers were stuck in the snow at lunchtime. We three forum members were the only skiers on the hill. It was rather good I must say. I could have and should have skied on my good wide Back Country XC skis. It was hard to turn in my old rock hoppers on that fresh ungroomed spring snow.

Hi
I am watching the automated modelling. The possibility of another rock hopper XC ski day in Spring at Lake Mtn. or Baw Baw on Friday next week is not out of the question.
Both locations are looking at possibly 10cms plus of snow on Thursday 17/10/19 and that will be followed by a below zero temperatures night and a cold morning after .

Forecast is "very windy" for tomorrow - Saturday. 8-20mm forecast with a top of 1 degree could mean more snow. Like the more snow bit but not the very windy bit.

It looks rock hopper XC skiable at Baw Baw right now.
http://www.janebunn.net/mt-baw-baw

It looks tempting :). I would take the chainsaw in the boot with the safety gear just in case I get a tree down on the road en route. However the forecast looks like rain from 10 am tomorrow onwards at BB and above zero temperatures. Both make for poor snow retention.
http://www.bom.gov.au/vic/forecasts/mountbawbaw.shtml
The "more snow" is tempting. The "very windy" is a turn off. It could be a coin toss whether to go up for the day .

@Mister Tee on XC Skis, are you up there at the moment (from reading your post) and do you know if the road is open? Considering bringing my nephew up who just arrived from the UK, they have never skied before but what a chance of out of season skiing: that would make May-Nov skiing. Bliss.

Sensational day at Baw Baw today. It was sooo worth it, better cover than some parts of the ski season. It was really superb and felt like autumn snow and it was snowing lightly the whole time we were there. Road was open and the staff were really good.

Do you think it might last for a couple of days?
Its so hard to say, if it rains tomorrow and the temps go up like Mister T is saying then it might not work out, but you just dont know. There is a reasonable lot of cover, but my weather app which is often right says rain from midday for a few hours and then snow again, so who really knows. It also depends what you are doing. I had a lot of balling today on my skis, but there was so much more cover than I expected but then I have skied on 6cm before in desperation, so not everyones cup of tea. There was a lot of falling over with my nephews and they did not really make it through to ground. My rule is if there is snow on villlage it is usually doable, but if it buckets then it could get washed away quick.

I left my glide wax in the car. It would have been really handy to recoat my skis today so that the snow would not stick to the tips and tails.I did not fear the fall because it was deep enough to cushion any crash , be it a rump brake, a face plant or a combination of both with legs flying everywhere ;-P. The modelling for BB according to Ms. Bunn's computer says Sunday will be wet and warmer. A bad combination. If the snow was groomed that would pack it down but that will NOT happen. It needs grooming already . It has been footprinted to death. The BB plateau out near Freeman's Flat and Thompson's run would 've been good to ski on today too , in the Back Country. As @Peagreenboat has observed today was the day to be there. I have been watching out for this day for a week or two on the weather forum and I was glad to get my fresh tracks in Nov. , without the entry fee too.

The BB snow camera still looks white for all of you who missed the fresh powder snow boat yesterday. There will be wet slush with footprints to ski on today.@beefa skiing told me via a forum PM that he and his friend arrived yesterday at BB before the access road was cleared and they skied down the approach road for some way!!.

Throwing it down at Mt. Baw Baw : big ,fat , dry flakes of snow. Sat. morning ,Nov. 9th 2019. The ski run notice board near the 'Skiosk' said "No snow" for all the trails. That was a laugh!.
It was very good to ski on with almost complete, deep cover.
It was "better than some days in winter with a good base"
as one lass who works there said to me, as I skied out from the car park to the XC ski trails.

A ski in December! Some will say it's not really Summer but it's a first for me. Rain on the way up but just cloud and wind at car park. 5cm or so in the Village, 10-12 up near the summit. Went straight up under summit T-bar, checked the cairn, then left to 5 ways junction. Full cover apart from a couple of drainage and melt points. Out around McMillan's the trail was sheltered from the fierce wind and the snow quality was best. Tea at Bloomfield's picnic table, then back up to Champagne for some turns which proceeded better than expected in shallow, soft snow. Lunch at the forgotten hut. Back up near the summit, sure enough a bunch of Indian guys came stomping along the middle of the trail. What can you say? It's December, goodwill to men and all that. Speaking thereof, Christmas greetings to forum members.

I am jealous. I went to Mt. Stirling and it was marginal rock hopper stuff. Not really skiable . I scratched my skis on barely hidden rocks and it was not safe to descend, turn or snow plough stop at all. It rained a lot too. It also became a right mess after the horse riding people came right up the middle of the track!

Sorry, T, wrong call. Stirling often gets that marginal Westerly Mt. Buller weather. And it's a long way to the top, where snow is often better, but really exposed to weather. BB can do well from a Southerly blast but December skiing was an unexpected bonus. Might cross paths next year.

The first of many FOMO pictures to come from Baw Baw in 2020 during the no fun allowed non ski season that is approaching.

Ahh yes, I am very disappointed to be missing out on the fun that is 500-1,000 dead per day, with 20% of the infected being the medical personnel attempting to save the lives of the ignorant and the innocent alike.

Woe is me, won't someone take up arms against this injustice that is being inflicted upon us by our overbearing police state???

I understand the sentiments you are expressing albeit with sarcasm and a degree of facetiousness. I do not wish to have anybody succumb to this contagious illness .
What will be interesting is whether such draconian powers will be repealed or not after the vaccine is becomes available . After 9/11 the Lib Labs waived through laws that are diametrically antithetical to the basic notion of habeus corpus.
Those laws are still there on the Federal statute books.
You can still be locked up on the suspicion of intending to do something bad for up to three months and not be told what it is you have done wrong , have no contact with anyone , no lawyer or family may be informed of your location and you cannot have the matter heard before a court of your peers i.e a jury where the alleged crime can be proved with evidence before an impartial judge.
There must be a balance in everything, the middle way grasshopper.
