Mt Beauty -> Falls Creek Rd Closures - How Likely?

Heading up to Falls this Thursday 19/08 evening. Probably getting to Falls pretty late ~ 10.30 pm.

A little concerned about the possibility of the road from Mt Beauty being closed given the possibility of some large snowfalls as forecast for that evening.

Does anyone have any knowledge/experience around what it takes for a road closure to occur? Might need to start thinking about some plan B options like alternative overnight accommodation

    Thanks

it is extremely rare for the road to be closed due to snow or wind. it is much more sheltered than the hotham rd

it is more likely to be closed for landslips or trees down across the road, but still not that common

throw a sleeping bag and extra warm clothes in just in case, but IMHO booking alternative accommodaton would be overkill.

I have not experienced or heard of closure of the Mt Beauty to Falls Creek road due to heavy snow in 24 years of skiing - but I'm not a local who drive up that road everyday. Have driven up in during some heavy snow falls and even spun on the road, but not closure. Now, the Harrietville-Hotham road is another matter :)

I can only recall the road being closed after heavy rain causing landslips and the burnt trees to fall. should be quite safe.

IIRC the road was closed due to snow after a massive dump some years ago (the one with the fantastic photo of powder skiing on ruined castle - maybe 2004???)

Not aware of the road being closed due to snow in 44 years of skiing it except during 1981 for a short period. Has been closed with landslips, trees and prangs though. You'll be OK.

Rain is the biggest issue a couple of years ago in September they had a huge amount of rain and wind and the road was closed.
I remember reading that people couldn't get off the mountain. When they re opened the road they were only letting people down the mountain in daylight in conveys with a police escort.

Yeah I was there then (added: it was about 4 years ago). 100-150mm fell in 24 hours.

The surface water and debris clogged the culverts and pushed trees and other debris onto the road.

Over 24 hours one convoy was escorted off the mountain.

Then there was only one circuitous route back to the Hume as the rivers flooded and closed most roads wiping away one bridge as well.

I would add that given the height of the rivers recently, another decent downpour of rain may produce similar difficulty getting out of Mt Beauty.

But re the OP, being stuck at Falls or Mt B. may not be a punishment. Slush can always be skied; mulled wine can always be sipped.

Landslip this morning closed the road. Hope it's cleared by tomorrow for the Hoppet.

Extract from email just in from FCRM

Please be advised BHP is currently closed between Falls Creek and Mount Beauty due to a landslip below the West Kiewa bridge (orange bridge).

VicRoads and FCRM are on site and are working to clear the road as quickly possible.

It is likely the road will be closed for some hours.

The word is that four hours is likely. Saw a picture with one rock the size of a small car.

Slip occurred north of bogong village according to vic roads. Falls creek tweeted that it should be closed for a couple of hours

Advice is that it is on that windy but flat section just after Bogong Village and before you head down to the orange bridge.

Around 11 am Friday 16 August when we were leaving FC there were road works (with 1 lane blocked off) going on around this area.

Is it a notorious area for slides?

    Not in the same place.

The area that has slipped has had a bit of mud running off it for the past couple of weeks but nothing significant. Today's slip has a couple of trees and one or two big rocks in it. It is pretty inconvenient but they won't be letting anybody through till it is safe.

Yeah I think that's what happened initially, but in order to clear it away they've had to close the road

No updates on fb for 3 hours

Vic roads site no update since 11.30am

A little frustrating, even if they still ain't sure, surely after 4.5 hours there has been some progress and they can narrow their estimate slightly to tonight or not

Perhaps they wonder if the road is simply too unsafe to reopen for the foreseeable future, but if that's the case, tell us that. What frustrates ppl the most is silence for many many hours

IF they get around it will be only one lane, my guess is they will start taking people up and down in small groups under police escort
I would say first priority will be getting people off the mountain the day trippers and those who have left there accommodation.

I guess the problem will be getting large machinery there who knows how long that will take.
Also these days they won't do anything until an engineer has looked at it and has said it is safe or not. Being a Friday they all went to the pub for lunch and turned there mobiles off.

    Folks,
There were a number of reasons for the delays in getting updates out to the public. It had nothing to do with machinery arriving on site or engineers assessing the slip.
The main reason for the delay was the continued instability of the site and two trees that were only hanging in there by a couple of roots. These trees procluded any machinery from entering the site safely to start clearing as all parties (Vicroads, Vic Pol and FCRM) agreed that it would be unsafe to do so.
In additon to the trees there was a power pole guy wire right at the top of the of the slip area. if the trees had come down it could very well have taken out the power lines below.
These trees were eventually felled very late in the afternoon after having the power disconnected and a safe plan of attack formulated.
In the interest of public safety the call was made approx 4 pm to shut the road for the night and let crews work at the slip without the pressures of traffic passing below.
Vicroads crew are currently removing all of the loose material from the slip site and are confident of having atleast one lane open by 7 am tomorrow (Saturday) morning controlled by traffic lights.
Let me just add that the large boulder depicted in the photo above is now one of about 20 that have since been pulled out of the slip site.
I'd estimate that about 1000 - 1500 m2 of material will be removed from the site in order to make it good.
I understand that this has caused a huge amount of disruption to those trying to get up or get off the hill today, but it was the right call to make!
RMB will continue to liase with Vicroads and VicPol to ensure that the road is safe to traverse tomorrow.
There will be no further updates on the Vicroads website tonight. The road will not be opened any early than 7.00 am tomorrow. There are manned road closures in place at Mt Beauty and Falls Creek to stop the general public from entering the road tonight. Please do not attempt to traverse this road. You will be turned away!
    Regards
    SP

I got stuck on the top side. Road was open single lane by 7am. Plaudits to the workers and authorities for sorting a big problem in good time.

Thanks to Howmans Gap Alpine Centre for their cheerful hospitality to rock refugees.

Morning all (well what's left of it!),

As mentioned above the road was reopened to a single lane by 7 am. The Vicroads crew finished pulling all of the loose material out about 1 am this morning. The next several hours were spent cleaning up the site to allow one lane of traffic to traverse the site.
I believe that the same crew will return on Monday to continue with the benching and clean up of the site. It is estimated that this could take upto 5 days to complete.

I too must pass a huge thanks on to all those involved with the restoration of the road, but also to the general public for understanding that these things do happen from time to time and when they do occur, nine times out of 10 the communities surrounding the incident rally to the cause and ensure that everyone is catered for to the best of their abilities. I don't recalling hearing of more that one of two grumps from peeps trying to get info or to somewhere last night.
It was a great effort by everyone both on and off the hill!
I'll post more updates as they come to hand...

    Cheers
    SP

Yeah, peeps were patient as they (we) waited at various places on the mountain.

IME the info flows were good. Sure, early estimates were optimistic but you can't know what wreckage means til you get into it.

The bottom line for me is that the Hoppet could proceed and that's a credit to all concerned.

(Sorry about link problem, will fix later)

Hoppet race start time were put back an hourand the event went really well under blue skies. There are still racers on the course, but all the placegetters where well and truly home before the fog started to roll in. Legkhov won in about 1.5 hours, amazing pace and more than 5 minutes clear.
