Thought I'd post this today, going fishing on Sunday. 1/ Mt Bogong today. Main summit on the left visible, West Peak in the middle seems higher but it's not. Losing snow quickly. 2/ Mt Bogong one week ago. Clearly a lot more snow, down to low levels.
Yeah, I was considering sneaking up next week with low expectations. This was FT from Hotham last week.
Was up there yesterday. Inconsistent, crusty on top, lots of bare patches. Came in from the east and did not go to the summit. There may be a few lines but thin in places.
Mt Bogong, 31 May 2020, up in the clouds. Can't see the summit or West Peak. Bad weather on the way. A little bit of snow due tomorrow.
I'll try and put one up every Sunday afternoon during the season. The scenery is constantly changing during Winter, sometimes cloudy but when it clears up after a heavy snowfall it's stunning. In Summer it's generally bushfire smoke.
6C in Tawonga South at the moment according to my thingy. Been raining most of the day. There's snow in the Alps but I can't see Mt Bogong at all. I got a glimpse of snow earlier until it clouded in. There's fresh snow up there guaranteed. Be interested to see how much. Fire's going. Got to sleep, been watching too much SpaceX stuff lately.
Mt Bogong, Wednesday 3 June 2020. Snow leftover from Monday. West Peak and main summit clearly visible. I estimate 15cm average, not enough to get the downhill skis out. Nice and sunny in the Alps today, no wind, currently 12C in Tawonga South.
Here's what i looked like on thursday 4th June up top. Breakable crust with 15-25cm base average where you would want to ski. filling in nicely just awaiting another dump or two. There was a fella cutting some laps in Cairn gully making the best of the crust, I was just doing a food drop and getting the legs in shape after a foot fracture.
Mt Bogong, Sunday 7 June 2020. West Peak and the main summit visible. 11C in the valley, no wind. It's freezing at night so the snow might hang around a little bit longer. No snow in the forecast period.
Few pics from the weekend. I'd say about 10-20 cm of crusty snow but very thin in places. Not great skiing conditions but there were a couple of guys giving it a go. Cairn gully More cairn gully Looking up Eskdale spur
Mt Bogong. Wednesday 10 June 2020. Clouds moving in, still snow up there but melting fast. Dodgey weather on the way. Can't see the summit or West Peak. A little bit of snow on Sunday by the looks of it. The local kookaburras are carrying on like headless chooks today!
You can see the summit on the left and West Peak in the middle now. Snow is melting quicker than I thought.
Mt Bogong. Sunday 14 June 2020 12.15 pm. Can't see a thing, there's a mountain up there somewhere. Been raining all night, currently 9C and windy in the Alps. Bugger all new snow at Falls Creek and Mt Hotham. No rain bearing systems on the radar for up here. Kicking back in front of the fire.
Mt Bogong. 17 June 2020, 9.30 am. No snow, got washed away in last weekend's rain. I haven't been able to see it for about a week. Now covered in clouds, can't see any part of it. See what Sunday brings.
Mt Bogong. 21 June 2020, at 12.05 pm. The highest mountain in Victoria somewhere in the clouds. Intermittent rain now, 8C, no wind. Snowing off and on at Falls Creek and Mt Hotham. Still feels pretty warm.
Mt Bogong. Wednesday, 24 June 2020 at 2.15 pm. Peaking its head out of the clouds. Quite mild, 13C, no wind. The result of last weekend's snowfall, which wasn't much. Not much snow expected in the forecast period.
Mt Bogong. Sunday 28 June 2020 at 1.00 pm. 11C in the Kiewa Valley, no wind. Not much snow up there. Falls Creek and Mt Hotham have bugger all snow too. They're just trying to make as much as they can. They're expected to open on 6 July. Let's hope the real stuff comes later in the week.
Mt Bogong. In the clouds. Wednesday 1 July 2020 at 12.50 pm. 14C in the Kiewa Valley. Bad weather (snow) on the way. Starting tomorrow the rain then the snow comes. Forecast to be 6C on Friday and that means snow.
Mt Bogong. Saturday 4 July 2020 at 10.15 am. After the storm. 5C in the Kiewa Valley. Snow down to low levels. Hotham claiming 37cm and Falls Creek 35cm.
Mt Bogong. Tuesday 7 July 2020 at 11.30 am. Currently 11C in the Kiewa Valley, 3.2C at Falls Creek. The meltdown has begun. All the snow from the weekend has melted off the trees, snowline receding. The main summit on the left is clearly visible. West Peak in the middle, it's actually lower than the main summit.
Mt Bogong. Saturday 11 July 2020 at 11.00 am. Currently 11C in the Kiewa Valley. The lifts mightn't be running for us downhill skiers but we're not missing much. Still snow on the main summit on the left and West Peak in the middle but it's melting quickly. Very flat light.
Mt Bogong. Tuesday 14 July 2020 at 11.50 am. Still snow up there. 12C in the Kiewa Valley but very windy. Just dropped off home for lunch, a good time to get a pic.
Mt Bogong. Saturday 18 July 2020 at 1.15 pm. 12C in the Kiewa Valley. We can't go skiing at Falls Creek or Mt Hotham but the snow is still there. More coming tomorrow. Main summit, Mt Bogong on the left, West Peak in the middle Taken from my backyard.
Mt Fainter. Mt Bogong. Tuesday 21 July 2020 at 12.45 pm. 12C in the Kiewa Valley, no wind, quite a mild day. Not much snow left on Mt Fainter and Mt Bogong looks bulletproof. The snow is receding.
I was planning to do a big BC ski trip out to Mt.Fainter this year but it looks like the plague and the snow shortage have shut that option down.
Don't bother. About to only snow is in the resort. With the usual suspects Main Street, Drovers and Wombats. Summit is unskiable so it The Maze. Bugger all left on Ruined Castle or Scotts too.
That is your preference but I can live without ski resort infrastructure per se i.e ski lifts etc. quite happily but without enough snow any kind of skiing is not possible. The Nordic ski athletes in the Winter Olympics do not seem to use ski lifts and they are amazing Nordic skate skiers. @BilbyBill posted this photo today 21.7.20 from Falls Creek . That looks like something I would happily XC ski on.
Corduroy or nothing he says? Do you also drive to the tan because walking Brighton beach gets boring...?
The alpine skiers are the best in the world. They use chairlifts. Mikaela Shiffrin uses a chairlift. She is a top slalom skier....and rather cute
I live in Tawonga South, 30 minutes from Falls Creek, and 1 1/2 hours to Mt Hotham. I never go to Melbourne.
Went up to Bogong on the weekend via the Eskdale Spur. Snow was icy, thin and generally unpleasant, however Cleve Cole was a very welcome overnight stop. Apart from a few smaller trees down, the track was clear. Photo taken on the ridge line between Hell Gap and the decent to Cleve Cole.
I think you meant to type the DESCENT to CC hut which is a decent descent on skis, but a bit hairy if it is icy.
I went up and skied a bunch of laps on Bogong for the day on Wednesday and had a blast. Good snow in the gullies with sth aspects. See my over excited clip of the last run of the day. It's thin but with cold temps and windloading I was happy. The ridgelines are a mess of rime and satstrugi but drop in and it was delicious.
