Thanks. We have achieved a fair bit over the months and things are looking promising.

Snowmaking is sorted out but depends on manufacturer prices, lifts need a full service and new grips for 44 chairs and need 40 to 50 poma bars.

Good work. You'd do well to also promote XC/touring - some very beautiful tours up on that plateau.

A hut out on the plateau may also generate extra walking and skiing visitation. Designed appropriately it can encourage camping as well as serve as a useful refuge.

In our expression of interest we mentioned that we would like to groom nordic trails as well, to keep all skiing activities under the same umbrella.

Really excellent news and a great effort. On a good day the XC at Buffalo can be delightful and the downhill great for families and beginners.

There are many reasons behind my choosing to give this project a go and one of them is the challenge. With persistence, research, knowledge and taking a 'it can be done' attitude, we can bring this once thriving little mountain back to its glory.

So many people who would love to ski/board can't afford to take their first step to the major resorts as it is outside their budget and if we can get them to have a taste of it, then they will continue to come and move onto the bigger resorts. A win win for all.

Focusing on school groups, families and other demographics, Buffalo has the real-estate (area) covered in snow, lifts available and by keeping tickets to almost half price of that of the majors, people will come to ski/board, toboggan and enjoy the area for what it has to offer.

Currently we have 2 major snowmaking companies interested in providing equipment (Technoalpin and SMI) and lifting is organised to be repaired through an engineering company.

Our first port of call is to get Parks to agree to us conducting further tests of the lifts as well as agree to a lease arrangement. Work safe Victoria will be asked to come and make an initial assessment of the lifts then we can fire them up. Our initial inspections of the lifts are that they are still in working order, other than a grease here and there, checking sheaves and safety circuits and start them spinning.

Once we know they all move, then we can get the engineers report for final determination and costs to get them up and running. Both chair lifts require new grips (44 all up) and new seats and back rests. None of the lifts were touched in the fires, only the grips and seats that were stored over summer.

The current snowmaking infrastructure is still in the ground with 10 hydrants and power outlets, all will need testing to ensure safety and no water leaks. Water is available, more than what we need initially.

Buildings for the first year will need to be portable to which we can hire and all revenue will be put towards a permanent structure.

Power will be generated on site to which we can hire the equipment or buy the power as there are many options available.

Sewage has been organised to either be taken away or processed on site through environmentally certified treatment with low water use toilets.

Our visitor numbers are predicted on current and past data to which will see it viable. There is no park entry fee and instead a percentage of turnover goes to parks for rent and environmental projects that we have put forward.

Mount Buffalo is higher than Baw Baw, Selwyn, Lake Mountain and gets very cold temperatures for snowmaking, well over 600 hours per year (May - Mid August). The mountain faces south, south west and can hold snow quite well.

Funding is possible through Government grants to which we have ticked all the right boxes for funding as it will create tourism, jobs, business growth etc. We will also be relying on a crowdfunding campaign as well as pre-sold season passed. None of this will go ahead unless we have a lease and all other certification passed.

There are a few nay sayers out there that say it can't be done and probably don't want it to happen, but with the area occupying only 0.5% of the park, snowmaking assisting the facility properly this time like all the other resorts here in Australia, temperatures available to make snow, still receives natural snow like the other lower resorts like Baw Baw, Selwyn, Lake Mountain etc of lower altitude, it can be done and be viable.

The biggest problem Buffalo had in the past was outdated snowmaking infrastructure and thus why there are already snowmaking master plans drawn up in the mid 2000's, prior to the fires.

We ask that you get behind us, help promote us, come visit us as this is a once in a life time opportunity to be involved in something quite special.

    Cheers
    Ben

    Re portable buildings.

Will you be able to get them up the road, given its gradient and winding character.

Nothing like the Baw Baw road, and trucks get up there!

There are 4 hairpin corners that I am concerned about but having a truck licence myself and that they would be carted on a semi trailer, a pilot car is required for the drive up. Just need to go out wide and cut across.

The other alternative is for a marquee (large) that you see at events and festivals. Snow loading / roof pitch is being looked at but we are also looking at keeping the building heated 24/7 by using the hot air produced by the generator radiators blowing into ducting to keep the building warm and any snow that falls on the roof will melt. It will also help on heating costs as we are using the heat from power generation, rather than gas fired blowers.

Good job all round Ben et al. Now you just have to not let the over the top bureaucrats in Melbourne, the Alpine Shire or the extremist f-wit greenies slow you down. Totally agree with your approach on making it accessible by affordable pricing. To get that to happen Parks cannot gouge and ridiculous planning constraints must not be imposed. Also no RFS burning the joint down! Do you need a funding whip around or can you get support?

  19. Mt Buffalo

    Mt Buffalo Guest

The Alpine Shire has been fantastic as we have had a meeting already with them and have their full support. Parks Victoria have been great so far but this isn't an overnight decision. Parks being the custodian of Buffalo have to perform their checks and ask for appropriate information, to which we have provided. To be fair to them they are doing what they can. It will be great to work with them to accommodate requirements for both of us.

Our first thing is to ensure the environment, ensuring all codes are followed and for it to be eco-friendly which isn't that hard to do. There is a masterplan for Mt Buffalo http://parkweb.vic.gov.au/__data/as...unt-Buffalo-National-Park-Management-Plan.pdf available to the public. It allows previsions within the lease to conduct skiing operations.

There are many precedents set for an operation like this in a national park. 1) It has already operated previously, 2) NSW national parks host 4 resorts already and all work in and with national parks.

Currently I am putting together a promotional video and editing it as we speak and will be released in the coming weeks or months as long as we get a yes, then we can ask for support financially. Maybe a co-operative with ski.com.au for promotion etc... ;) in exchange for free season passes Ian? ;)

    NEED YOUR HELP!

Im currently putting together a promotion video for our campaign for reopening Mt Buffalo and require your help.

We need faces and voices! Grab your mobile out, film in HD or best quality in a horizontal position (no vertical) email them to media@mtbuffalo.com

All you need to say is "BRING BACK THE BUFF!" in either groups, individuals, something quirky but can't be more than 5 seconds.

Those that make the cut will be able to receive a free day ticket if we reopen, (yes it's a gamble) so make sure you include your name, age, phone number and email address. Those that are in groups must be identified from left to right to obtain a free lift ticket, should we reopen. Remember, those that make the promo will receive the tickets.

Entries close at midnight Wednesday the 7th of October!
    Cheers
    Ben

Wow, one notification in the last 5 years about an industry specific thing that provides a green 1 notification that you can look at and ignore. It isn't like you don't get dozens of system generated notifications as it is every day about people quoting you etc.

Season pass was to block banner advertising, which it does. Nothing was ever promised about community service notifications. If it distresses you that much then I will refund your $22 and you can return to a normal member.

Maybe you are referring to the overlay notice I realised I had hit the wrong button and took down after about 20s.

I then replaced with the correct option which was a global notification - which appears in the top right with all your other notifications as if someone had quoted your post or replied to a thread you watch. A little green 1 notifier that highlighted the thread and appeared as follows:

Bring Back the Buf is a campaign to help get Mt Buffalo back up and running. More details can be found in this thread, please help. Bring Back the Buf

In an identical way to the little green 1 that when I clicked on it said:
JoeKing quoted your post in the thread Buffalo Update.

The overlay notice that sits at the bottom of every page is only used for major global announcements, like forum going down or change of terms and conditions etc.

Yep. Overlay, as described, is what I saw. All good.
