Just been to falls creek today, good cover out past Rocky knob and I was told by other skiers, all the way to Wallaces and Cope Huts.

Today,June 25th 2016 was a superb fresh powder snow day.We snow shoed from Cresta Valley to the Horn summit and back. The weather was mostly clear and sunny except at the summit of The Horn. There was no view to be enjoyed at the very icy summit of The Horn. The Horn rd was already groomed when we got there this morning. The cover was deep and complete. The snow ploughs had cleared the road and chains were mandatory for nearly all vehicles .The gorge and the chalet also looked like a winter postcard. The Buff in perfect winter conditions has it's own voodoo and mystique.
My only gripe is/was that
People who wear street shoes and make boot prints on the groomed trails are not getting the thumbs up from me and there were quite a few doing just that today.

I was hoping to camp at Lake Catani in a couple of weeks time, but Parks Vic have stopped winter camping there. It is a great location for introducing people to snow camping and snow shoeing.

I rang the Mt Buffalo ranger. You can hike into the Lake Cattani camp ground and snow camp there. No fees or booking are required. There is a shelter/ hut but buying firewood from the Ranger seemed like a remote possibility. There is a pit loo there that is open too. All other facilities are shut until the Green season starts again . Two of my crew snow camped at the Horn picnic ground. I piked out of that and went back to my friend's house in Myrtleford.

Thanks for the update Mr T. I received an email from parks saying it was closed but it just didn't seem right. I camped there two years ago with no issue. I take firewood in with me. They did have a shed with firewood that you could buy.

However I could be wrong about whether the best powder snow dump yet at Mt Buffalo has come and gone. This new snowfall is looking good but sadly I am stuck in Melb.
I will ask my old XC ski friend in Myrtleford for a proper Muppet news flash about snow on THE BUFF.

That day last month at The Buff ( Mt. Buffalo ) was a- fecking- mazing. You don't get that mix of oodles of fresh dry powder snow and sunshine that often up there. It meant that the finger over the lens had to be used to take pictures so that the personal memories remained clearer and more real that any photos could ever be.

Hi all,
Heading up to Bright 26-29th of May. I've limited experience of snow, wife has never seen the stuff apart from brushing my jacket off from an unexpected flurry at Mt Wellington.

We'd like to at least see, or even better touch, some snow this coming weekend. I realise there is no snow for skiing, not interested in that. Just a wheelbarrow full of snow would do :D

Are any of the resorts within reach of Bright likely to have snow that we can actually touch, or see from less than miles away?

None anywhere at the moment, so it will totally depend on the weather. Hotham or Falls Creek far more likely than Buffalo. There maybe a small amount of man-made snow at the 2 big ones (Hotham & Falls).

Snow lying on the ground for any length of time - unlikely
Light snow falling and sitting for a short time - maybe but you would need to be lucky with timing. More likely at falls or hotham than buffalo. Keep your eyes on the forecast for falls and hotham. The hotham road on a snowy day is not much fun for novices (but glorious on a nice day). Take chains (especially to hotham) even though you are not required to by law until the season opens. Probably won't need to fit them but best have them just in case

Does anyone know what is happening on Mt Buffalo re facilities, restoration etc? Has it all fallen in a heap again or is it doing anything? Curra, Weerab, Tee, Tecks...what info do you have?

Nothing is the short answer, seriously nothing. Various proposals have gone nowhere

There was a mob doing work on the place a year or so back as I recall. I assume VicGov is a useless as it is corrupt and will not attend to the place.....while it falls down. Complete waste.

I reckon there is more chance of Port Phillip icing over than there is any chance of there ever being any ski lifts ever running on Buffalo ever again.

They might restore or expand or knock down the Lodge, but all these options are equally arbitrary - none of these will mean anything meaningful to existing stakeholders- a restored Lodge would be a museum, an expanded Lodge would be an upmarket operation pricing most out of the market, and a knocked-down lodge would be the same as what we have now. Buffalo's future is biking and day tripping leveraged out of the increased marketing presence of Bright in the biking/glamping world. Trail-running and guided outdoor adventure operations have a future up there, but only so far as they can integrate with the vibe happening out of Bright.

The VNPA opposes a new plan to turn the Chalet and its surrounding area into a lego land resort for cashed up bogans. It is a national park FFS!

Surely there's a small middle ground between the extremes of rotating McDonalds on the
Horn and total sign less wilderness. I mean for 70 years we coped two small ski centres , 1 chalet and a more recent lodge /motel. Now it's all or nothing? Really??
PS: sorry , i don't know much about the 'fancy' developments - other than the lift proposal and the more recent Gondola stuff.

That sounds far too much like a practical proposal and common sense - not a snowball's!!

Agree there is a middle ground. Insane not to maintain the resources. At the very least it would provide the RFS with something to burn down.....again.

So for the first time, well... ever... im actually interested in the possibilty of snow at Buffalo from the 08th till the 13th July. We staying in Porepunkah and looking at perhaps taking the kids up for some snow play. Questions..
Is the an entry fee? The area around the old ski lifts, is this the best snow play area? Any other useful tips? If there happens to be a low level dump do they clear the road? Thanks.

There is no gate entry fee at Mt .Buffalo.
You must carry wheel chains and fit them where and when instructed to do so.
Cresta valley( the old ski lift area) offers good snow play for those who are not on some kind of ski/ snow board/ snow shoe mission .
Dingo dell might be better for your needs, it has a cafe of sorts and a better slope for toboggan use.Others enjoy the cricket pitch for snow ball fights etc. However the summit area of The Horn usually has the best snow cover and views if you pick the right day shortly after a big dump of snow. Last year in late June we timed our winter trip to perfection and arrived at Cresta in the morning from Myrtleford to see clear skies and 30 cms of fresh powder snow , with snow cover quite low down the mountain too.
The road is cleared by a snow plough /VIC ROADS, if there is a big dump of snow but the road ices over esp. on the bend that drops down from the Catherdral to Cresta so having wheel chains are a must .The photo is yours truly at Mt. Buffalo on June 25th 2016.
