I am too stingy to buy a ski helmet and if I crash into a tree or rock and bash my head then I could be permanently damaged. Others would argue that it is indeed verily too late and that such an accident could only improve matters for the better in terms of my head and its contents.
Way to go. I cut the ear flaps off ski helmets anyway.
Need to fill the top vents with Silastic to avoid water on the brain, however.

Does anyone have an update for the snow this weekend? Will there be enough cover for xc or tobogganing?

I think you should take the canoe and paddle your way to serenity on Lake Catani. Until we get a 20 cm snow fall at Cresta with snow appearing at Rollason's Falls picnic ground I would suggest Mt. Buffalo is a dead loss in terms of snow. I went last Sat. June 1st and XC skied a bit on my XC rock hoppers around Cresta and I hopped a lot of grass and rocks. It was a nice day in a beautiful place but not what I had hoped for.

The Café at Dingo Dell was open last Sat. but other than that it was not really much of a ski day .There has been not enough snow falling since to make it worth the drive. I love XC skiing at Mt. Buffalo but I am also wary of its shortcomings. It must be fresh and deep in terms of snow cover to make it worth it. We shall wait and watch.....grasshopper.

The new infrastructure at Lake Mt was a bit of a surprise for Team Bears but we don’t oppose the modern new buildings at Gerratys Carpark..we saw folk enjoying their coffee in the warm as we looked fir the dunny. With the wet blowy conditions often encountered up there it looks the goods for the poor frozen kids.

Has Mt Buffalo got the like of the Lake Mt set up?I reckon I could sit in the warm and drink hot chocolate all day if the weather was crap?

Yes, Dingo Dell Café is the place to sit and warm up, almost dry out , use a toilet and rest with a hot cuppa and a snack after being drenched by R**n on sodden and slushy snow after XC skiing down The Horn Road. I have done just that last season in 2018.

Just for the hell of it, the matter of facilities on Buffalo is a bit of a sore point in jot just our family but many from my XC & tele ski gang, who started skiing mid/late 80s. We used Cresta as a learning ground before advancing to the bigger, higher cost fields.

Sure there's still xc and very basic facilities now but nothing even remotely like Lake Mtn - I suppose in part because there's lots of good tax payers from Melbourne to see and use it!

But at Cresta - the state Govt. collected the insurance post Fire (as I understand) and then failed to replace the main building. My take on this is that the Govt. undervalues Regional facilities like Buffalo/Cresta - and the people who use them.

Now we can argue forever about was little was done /or not to save the place during the fires and even whether it was worth maintaining or upgrading the 5 lifts at Cresta afterwards. But the lack of a decent base at Cresta is an indictment on Victoria and should be corrected a ASAP - IMO.

Now full disclosure - I haven't skied Buffalo - to my disappointment - since my 10 year old was born - as I joined an on mtn ski club, where it was easier to place him in crèche and get in a lift day.
So I guess there could now be a shiny new pavilion in situ which no one has reported here. But I doubt it.

In the meatime, a note to self: must ski the Horn again soon. Take the lad and impress him with the whole place. Rant over Steve.

Places such as Mt. Buffalo have enough facilities for the avid low budget XC skier to ensure a number of visits each ski season.
The Hut and Pit loo at Lake Catani campground remains open all winter so snow camping there is feasible.

You just have to cart firewood in from your car boot at the locked gate i.e 1.5 km. Perhaps towing a sled laden with cut wood could work ?.
When The Buff has enough snow it is superb for day touring on BC skis. With sufficient low level heavy cover and early start , a trip out to Mt .McLeod and back on BC XC skis would be memorable. You'd need skins and a lot of fitness. I would like to try that one year while I still have the energy and enthusiasm.
The Mt. Buffalo ski school operates every July and August from a base at Dingo Dell and offers guided tours and affordable Nordic ski lessons .More details can be found on the WWW.

Might want to pack a snorkel as well. 17 on Saturday in Melbourne makes me doubt it will happen at Buff.
It is an automated forecast which is changing each day. I will watch it and see what it suggests in a day or two. The Cold front that is coming may change somewhat in its behaviour based on the modelling. Melbourne usually has different weather to Mt. Buffalo , Myrtleford and Bright.

12-13 in Melbourne. Get those temps and that is all you need to know. Anything higher than that and it’s increasingly marginal. Especially at lower elevations.

Generally I agree with you but the fool and the optimist are often seen together in public.

The revised automated forecast is looking increasingly more like water skiing and less like snow skiing. One must be certain about the merit of the journey before launching the mission!

The non automated but highly accurate “table” is suggesting that sunbaking may be the activity atm!

In fact the snow gauging station may well be utilised fir conventional activities until further notice.
Perhaps we can enjoy pics of bbqs and drinking activities for the month?

Goodness knows how those NSW dudes are going with the Spencer’s Ck snow depth graphical analysis?

The automated modelling is swinging back and forth between sun baking, submarine service and almost half decent rock hopping on skis for Sunday at Cresta. I am still watching JB Hut -Paw Paw Plain forecast at 1650 M. elevation near Hotham for a possible XC ski on Sunday. I will know by Friday whether to pack the car or not.

Team Bears trying not to over think the graphical analysis provided by Spencer’s Ck Gauge!

Approx 25cm accumulation...sounds like the depth of Team Bears minus their commander standing on each other’s shoulders!

These are worrying times we must say!

Both Forecasters are now on board for some snow falling at the Buff on Thursday next week for the following 4 days. If we are lucky then some of the Resevoir road, Wild Dog Plain and the Mt. McLeod track could become skiable.MAYBE Plan your ski sickies and make a plan to snow camp at the Lake Catani hut if that grabs you. However we shall watch and wait and see what happens …….. grasshopper.

Raining today at Cresta car park.Rain has decimated the cover.Snow cam says it all. Will need it to get colder to bring freezing level down.
That is woeful news comrade , however there could still be some fresh snow that falls and sticks between now and Monday lunchtime , which is when I plan to rock hop up there.

Drove up today hoping the rain would fall as snow, unfortunately not. It was blowing a gale and what snow was there was very soft and slushy (Cresta).
From the looks of the webcam Dingo Dell is back to grass after today's rain.

Hi.
A snap decision based on amazing deep powder snow at Mt. Buffalo has been made !!! .

My friend and I are going snow camping at Lake Catani hut at Mt. Buffalo tomorrow for 2 nights. She will be on snow shoes and I will be on BC XC skis. The entire mountain at Mt. Buffalo is rarely skiable like it is now, it costs nothing ski and camp there, and the trails may have been groomed, whereas JB Hut and its surrounds are skiable every winter.
