I feel sick. Close mate of mine as well. Fair chance I might have been with them if I was at Buller this weekend.

Just reading news about this. Awful to read about anyone from the "Mt Buller family". I hope he'll be okay. All the best for a speedy recovery for your mate @CarveMan and @luvthabumps.

BTW is was on Chute 1. It was very difficult to get across to 000 the correct location.
They also don't have the ski patrol number, or a phone book to look it up or internet access
to search for it :( I had to go through this twice with them.

Fark @djam didn't know you were there as well. Spoke to CS - he said it was a terrible fall to witness.

Not a lot we can do now except keep him in our thoughts. As @skixracer said not only is he an amazing skier but he is an inspirational guy and a very well known and respected Buller guy.

I've just had a debrief - I don't think it's appropriate to give out too many details in the thread, the media will be all over it and I don't want to be misquoted I'm some way, especially if it will upset his family.

All I am hoping is that he is OK.

On Saturday the 20th of September, the ski patrol received a call I made via 000 that there had been
a serious fall in chute 1. It wasn't long before another guy I'd just spoken to, at the top, had made his
way down to the location and was able to relay messages via the other person in our group of 3. So
that I could pass the information onto the 000 operator. While still on that call I could see the first
Patroller making his way down the rock face to the same location. It took a while, as it is very step
and he is in ski boots. Before long he was with Al. I did not see much more as I was helping out the
other Patrollers that had arrived at the top.

On Sunday, about 24 hours after the fall, I walked in from the bottom. As I wanted to have a better
understanding of what I'd viewed from around 200 meters above, the day before. It was extremely
difficult to even get to the location. I wasn't carrying a pack with medical supplies, nor an oxygen
bottle, or an even a heavy Cascade. For a while, the day before, there was a plan to winch the basket
directly up to the helicopter. This is very understandable, as the only way out on the ground, was back
down the steep valley around 100 metres, part covered in firm snow and bushes. But for reasons I
don't know, the ground path is what was taken.

The ski patrol men and woman preformed the whole operation in the most professional way possible,
over the 3.5 hours it took, to stabilise Al, move him into the casscade, lower him down to the cat track,
walk along a narrow path to the waiting snow mobile. He was then taken back up the closed off Family
run and across to the waiting helicopter next to Boggy drive.

At the same time, another crew of 3 was rescuing, the other skier who had been waiting 60 meters or
so down the chute. Followed by his skis and poles and finally Al's skis and poles, this time walking out
the bottom. In the middle of this, a lady from the lift company brought water, as it was thirsty work
climbing down and back up several times. Steep enough to be climbing up on his hands and feet.

I was thanked many times over the weekend by the ski patrol and would like to return the thank you.

*** WELL DONE AND THANK YOU MOUNT BULLER SKI PATROL ***

I have to agree Ski Patrol have done a great job this year. This is the second seriously injured rescue out of the Chutes that Iam aware of both times ski patrol did a superb job.

It's a shame that as guests/community there isn't away they can be thanked/rewarded more publicly for the work they do!

I would love to see a fund raiser eg raffle to raise money for them for things that would assist in making the job easier.

I donated a six pack for the ski hire techy when I put a decent base shot in his brand new demo skis so a slab for patrol would be going rate

When I broke a wrist at Falls Creek years ago, the ski patroller who took me to the medical centre, was a girl. When we returned to Falls a few weeks later I took a big basket of 'girlie' products that she would have found hard to obtain up there.

I "donated" 3 cases of beer to the local CFA to burn off a heap of dead blackberry canes. Unfortunately the fire just charred the damned things and I had to pull them out by hand.

Anyway, it was a good cause and the guys got some extra practice.

Just a quick update on Al - after a week of good progress and successful surgeries to all his extremities, he has begun to regain consciousness.

Still a long road ahead of him but this is very positive news given the prognosis from the medical professionals on the scene on Saturday.

Keep the well wishes and the positive vibes coming.

well that's it, 2014 winter done and dusted.

Plenty of lifts running today, blue skies and windy from around midday on. Unfortunately the
snow was soft, even first thing :( but I still had a few hours of fun. Followed by my first MTB
ride post Winter, a quick lap down Gang Gangs and back up the road, as the Split Rock
return had too much snow still on it. (south facing). I need to take a rake out to Gang Gangs
    yet.

All in all, a good year, some awesome skiing on the back of the two earlier great falls.

We all come here for fun, and most the time Buller delivers. One family earlier this year
came here for some snow fun, only to have it end in tragedy, when their young son died
playing just outside their accommodation. I can't for one minute understand how that
would effect me. One can only hope his family and friends can recover from losing a
    young child.

The snow has lots of dangers that are not widely known in a country which for the most
part is without snow. If you have friends at or coming to the snow, try to pass on your
knowledge of things to look out for. How to drive in the snow, even clothing to wear etc.

RIP, young child, you will not be forgotten

    Well said.

It's been a few weeks since I was last up, but the early-mid part of the season delivered in spades.

Any season that allows you to casually ride the Tirol T for weeks on end gets a massive tick from me! 2014 saw plenty of quality skiing and socialising with all of the usual suspects, and lots of new faces. Good times.

Now - bring on Summer and a few MTB weekends.

Thanks for updating @CarveMan. I've been thinking of him each day and had been hoping for positive news. Great to hear!

Sounds like he's putting as much determination and effort into his recovery as he's put into his skiing. Excellent work, Alistair!

Love eating the berries, but the shrubs are the cockroaches of the plant world, ie, would still be in perfect nick after nuking them.

djam, only a few days after that tragedy, I caught a taxi which happened to be driven by a close friend of the family. I was told some family history, and for their own personal reasons their littlest boy was possibly treasured for even more reasons than most; he was truly a gift.

The effect on the parents and siblings was significant, and one that will always impact them. I sat in the back totally heartbroken. I won't ever forget this little boy, or his family.

I've gotta say, not that I would ever wish the snow away, but it's quite novel to be at work on a Monday morning and not be exhausted!!!

A great season was enjoyed by all - we had some fantastic conditions and the mountain over-delivered on my personal requirement of 8 weekends with solid off-piste skiing available.

I went through my scans on the Buller Holidays app - 26 days, and I rode Bull Run Chair over 60 times. That's a win.

The weather really co-operated on the weekends too - by Australian standards it was pretty bloody good and there were no weekend days that were write-offs due to wind hold etc.

All in all it was a fantastic winter.

I'll lock this thread later today - we can then retire to the banter thread or someone can start a Summer Development thread if there's anything worth talking about. The lift company has a reliable track record of re-investment following profitable winters so hopefully this year is no exception.

I'm really looking forward to seeing some snowmaking expansion in the near future.
