Time to kick off the annual reports thread - had a couple of 'ground coolers' already.

Aim of this thread is to be a one-stop shop for all things revolving around the conditions on the mountain. If someone can click on the last page of this thread and get a good handle on what things are like on the hill then we are winning.

As usual the usual loose and breezy style will probably be the way to go, but real OT stuff needs to go in the banter thread.

Have a great 2015 winter everyone!

Yeah pretty much. I've got some different accommodation arrangements this year so I might head off to some other resorts as well this year. I've only skied NSW in spring so it might be a good chance to head there during winter. CG is overseas during August for work & will miss 2 weekends so I might caravan it up with @Donza then.

I may be heading up, depends if i can find cheap accommodation for 3-4 blokes, and if there is anything to slide on, happy to even just slide on burke street and drink a heap of beers.

I just had my heaters serviced and I did ask them to leave all the power on so the cam would be live but it doesn't seem that this is the case. I've got a sparky going in to fix some dimmers so maybe then. Will need to tie back those damn fairy lights that Mrs LTB wrapped around the balcony again to get them out of frame.

Will be up for Opening weekend and then not until School Hols

FFS, can't someone up there let us all know what's happening!

Apart from someone's post in Weather, saying that Buller's myfacespacebookthing reported it was snowing at 9pm, there's been nothing. Any accumulation?

I know it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, because whatever anyone gets out of this system, it'll all be gone next week. Still, it's nice to know.

Last night they tested out the new snow makers on Bourke street, seems like they work pretty well. Hopefully the temperature will drop substantially and stay that way until October.

Without wanting to reignite the debate on the new 80 zone, I sampled it for the first time Friday/Sunday and here's some feedback:

On the way up, with the benefit of an empty road, it was nothing more than an annoyance, and as the figures suggest, added 2-3 mins to the trip.

For the return trip yesterday there was a fair bit of traffic about. I decided to set cruise spot on 80 as a test. Within 1km I had about 6 cars banked up close behind me, a couple of which were constantly 'edging' for a heroic overtake opportunity. A few in the first thread predicted this would happen.

No police/cameras were in the area on either day.

I think as drivers we are conditioned to embrace lower speeds through towns, but the notion of slowing for an extended open highway period feels foreign. Fingers crossed we don't see frustration-related incidents along this stretch in the meantime.

In other road news, the right turn at the far end of Mansfield (at Caltex) has become a large roundabout.

Decided going to head up opening weekend and stay Sat & Sunday night.

Anyone got any recommendations of cheap accommodation for 3-4 guys in their 30's?

You could have a look on Stayz or maybe give High Country Reservations a call. It's a busy weekend but it's unlikely everything would be booked out

buller Central is where the old YHA was and I think part of their deal was that they had to offer cheaper accom so you could try them as well. How cheap it really is I'm not sure

started snowing around 18:30, after sleet and rain all day, everything is nice and
white now :) Looking at the forecast, it is looking like this could be the start.

I imagine the guns will do there thing to make sure.

Looking at snowmaking for the next few nights, I'd be super surprised if there isn't Bourke St and then whatever other blue run they are prioritising, most likely LBS looking at the cams.

LBS to bottom load would be the go. If they can get that up and running and make a good base on it then it'll run the whole season. LBS to mid-load isnt really worth it.

Now there is snowmaking to the bottom they really try to get it open to the bottom - mid load is a really rough takeoff and they have to run the chair slower. It's actually a quicker trip from the bottom at full speed.

Also by law they need to staff the bottom station when it's loading at mid load....of which there is a funny story involving a liftie and some reading materials that often occupy lift huts....

yep, I reckon looking at those cams we could be a goer on LBS and Bourke St. I wonder if they could get Shakey up as well?

Have someone going into my place this arvo to try and get the VS cam going. Will power everything off and on and hopefully it will reset. PP is on the lookout as soon as the images start flowing through. No idea of ETA though.

I reckon they could open Bourke St tomorrow if they really wanted to.

In years gone by they have opened up on the Friday for a 'staff preview day' - ie send all the rookie employees out on their boards to pack it in so they don't damage the groomers.

well, we know one good thing about Buller - they will pump those guns 24/7 if it means they can get some lifts turning and get some $$ rolling in from ticket sales this weekend. Good on 'em.

I'll have to find some bindings for those skis you've got set aside for India. I'm pretty sure we've got plenty of skis with good binding lying around. I'll bring them in next week some time with a boot.

Its odd that it dropped out because it's hard wired now to the router indoors not WiFi anymore.
Possible ISP issue like last year.
After it re-powered first images should come in within about 10 mins.
Is it possible for them to try to log into your network to see if internet is up if images don't flow ?

APIRA cam uses same script and ftp folder and login as VS cam and its working so that end of it is ok.

It looked like they were still blowing a little while ago. Unless it was just the unlikely event of fog. ;)

They are literally just flying in and out as a favour to me so unlikely. Worst case scenario we will have to wait until the weekend.

Funny thing is it ran fine for about 4 days after mx turned the power on then just locked up??
