Northern slopes, pretty much cactus. Shaky Knees ok first up but thining and slushy in the afternoon. Summit slide is dead, if you take cat track from Burnt Hut, some walking required to reach Grimus chair. On the other side: Men's Downhill patchy, ok for rock hoppers, better heading directly under Southside chair and taking cat track to lift. Summit ok to skier's left, howqua extension hanging in there, but doesn't have too much more to give. LBS closed In use by interschools. Wombat quite nice, but very crowded.
More of the same today. Summit was the pick of the runs, but plenty of caster sugar at the summit chair load! Wombat was ok too, but just mayhem with all the usual LBS traffic also heading down there.
Pretty warm today and most runs were very soft by the end of the day. It was great this morning with lifts opening at 7 for the interschools, there was almost no one skiing at that time and I had some great runs down summit , wombat and Howqua. Today, most open runs were fine but without some fresh snow soon, a lot of runs like mens downhill, howqua and Burnt hut will close.
I thought yesterday morning was great skiing and pretty rock solid away from the sun. North side struggles in the sun - (what's new) but I reckon there's still enough around for a few fun weeks of skiing. I've only got 2 weekends and both are filled with comps. #dreamingofalaska
Bullerites - if I get the $79 permit to take my car up and do drop off at the lodge, are there free shuttles back up to the village from the overnight carparks? There's very little difference in price between the car permit and oversnow(tarmac) taxi, so I'm wondering if the permit will give me more or less hassle.
If they park you close to the day carpark, then just use the free shuttle bus from there. May be more of any issue if they park you further down the mountain, but I think that's unlikely.
Any predictions for Interschools week? Are we going to be able to use a lift pass or will we have to walk to the runs like last time at Buller?
I'm not prepurchasing this time after being ripped off last time. From what I've heard the SX and moguls courses are accessable by foot.
Will be doing the same. Most of those with local knowledge in 2013 simply walked to the courses from the shuttle bus stop at the Arlberg.
Unfortunately most of us had no local knowledge, and we couldn't get refunds despite some of the courses being only accessible by foot. To add to the hurt, Buller sold tickets to the general public that weekend at a lower price than our "discounted" pre purchased tickets.
Absolutely Skichic! Still got a bad taste from that experience and I am mighty worried that they will happily pull the same trick. I am very keen to know what the snow coverage is like so that we are not forced into spending large sums unnecessarily, thus avoiding feeling so down about the experience.
Those without "local knowledge" were left feeling rather poorly treated (I am trying not to swear). Or is that the idea?
Can someone tell me can i access the moguls course without a ticket. I have pre-purchased a ticket for a myself as a team manager of 1! I have until tomorrow to organise. If i can walk i will cancel my ticket....
wolly, inadequate tautologies are inadequate! And insufficient. And too scarce, for those unfamiliar with the territory, and those people who don't know the runs. Yes, @skichic @CIRCA1962 @winter, if moguls are on Chamois, you can definitely walk. It's only maybe 100 metres on the road from the village. I have no idea whether these events are held on Bourke St, but if so, you could also walk there. There is a road running along both sides of Bourke St. Again, it's only 100 - 200 metres, but uphill. Sadly, at this rate, all the footwear you'll need are thongs!
National Interschools at Buller in September seem such a shame when there is good snow at other Victorian resorts. Loads of people I know are not going to bother this year if it appears to be as bad as 2013.
Buller has been very unlucky with natural snowfalls this season. As a Hotham based skiing family we have already done 3 trips to Buller this season with 2 more to go...SSA nationals this weekend and interschool's the following .They are very good at cornering the events market but with their marginal snow cover this really doesn't make sense to me to hold so many events there. POLITICS !!!
They can walk to the course either way snow or not, it s a short walk up a cleared street from the village. No need for lift tickets if they're not skiing themselves.
Haha. Rushed post. Anyone up there able to say how conditions are? Wife is still basically beginner. Likes family run and such- are those runs still in ok nick or are they done? cheers
I skied yesterday, great day sun was shining, virtual no wind. for a beginner spring is a great time to go skiing. enjoy the sunshine and improve your skills, and enjoy the fantastic scenery.
Is there a direct walking path from the CSIR carpark to the end of Goal Post Road ? I have noticed there is walkway that follows the road, but is there also a path that goes straight up the hill. The distance seems to be only a couple of hundred metres at the most ??
Not sure. I do see a lot of people walking on the side of the road, so I'm assuming nothing straightforward. I'm guessing it is possible, but it's still a bit of a slog, especially in winter.
Lost Grimus today. Can someone report on the state of Howqua extension, chute cross cut etc? Many thanks
Apart from South Side (Men's Downhill), we're back to snow making areas pretty much. Thank god for the snow makers and the cold temps. Monday into Tue may bring something - but after 8 weather systems in a row that have under delivered / missed entirely, don't expect too much. Bring on the new snow making in 2016.
When I was there last weekend, crosscut was closed, chute was open half way with excellent cover becuase of the snowmaking, and howqua extension was great but the cover was becoming thin and after the recent weather they had, it may be a bit patchy.
Really impressive mogul course the mountain put together on Chamois shown on their Instagram page. Well done Bulls!
Great day of ABOM training on Chamois today. If you are on the mountain tomorrow I'd seriously recommend heading over to Chamois in the afternoon to see some of the best mogul skiers in the world tearing it up. Men's World #1 and a most of the Canadian team, a bunch of US, French and Japanese guys as well as all the top Aussie guys except for Matty Graham. Quite a few of the tops girls as well. The big dogs were smoking it up today - back full, cork 1080's and super fast skiing. Some pics here if you have FB https://www.facebook.com/matt.fitto...41836.734031101&type=3&ref=notif¬if_t=like
Day 2 of SSA u14,u16 national championships at Lt buller spur. excellent course and conditions and top competition.
Good job Mother Nature, excellent and well done. Top stuff. @wolly, I imagine you'll enjoy being greeted by this in the morning. It will no doubt be a welcome sight, because seeing freshies first thing in the morning is always lovely. It will probably be a pleasant surprise come dawn. Perhaps you can take a break and sit by the fire pit in the village, and rest awhile and keep warm by the burning flames. Maybe while you're having a leisurely moment and keeping toasty, you can enjoy a deliciously sweet, creamy layered slice of torte, that's rich and decadent. I hope it's sweet and yummy. As would be the fresh snowfall. Good job @DbSki, too.
Good morning. Its before the afternoon. Mt buller is white. Covered in fresh snow. Still falling from the sky. Above my head. Minus 3 degrees. Its cold. The flame is not burning. No flammable gas and air is ignited. Its foggy. Low cloud. Very quiet. Not many people around. Might go to school to get taught. Oopps the cake shop!!
