The place is likely to half empty tomorrow night, and possibly the weekend with Melbourne playing in a final.
Beautiful sunny morning! Looking forward to tiny ice gristle gliding in the morning followed by a slush fund afternoon!
Got a bit distracted by a cute little girl this morning, heading out shortly, not sure which skis to take! Might chuck on the GS skis as it did get cold after the wet.
Sitting on Grimus as I type. It’s actually pretty nice up here. Soft turns especially up high. Nth side is getting soft now, time to head over the south. Taken photos as usual will post later
Easy drive up. Looked like 5cm overnight from the cars around, slushy about. Going to go skiing soon.
Getting low tide on Nth Side Still plenty of coverage Admiring my figure 8’s under Grimus Having a moment on Wombat
Pretty much what @CarveMan said. There is a shittone of snow especially on the sth side and higher elevations. North side won’t last much longer except the top parts. Aka Grimus and such
Yup we will lose the lower northside (cowcamp/dam run/village), lower wombat bowl, lower fed maybe but the rest will be sweet.
How busy has it been up on the hill on Saturdays this year? I've had the fortune of only making midweek trips this weekend, but since I've got a season pass now it'd be rude not to use it.
Less busier than previous years. Doubt you will encounter many crowds tomorrow if you avoid the usual spots.
It's been busy but the crowd is spread out so no biggie, only real lines I've been in are at Grimus mid-Morning and Howqua. But it really falls away each week now, ghost town today.
Late start, but it was very sweet. Sweet enough I decided to do this Was not that sweet, but first time this year. But then the sweetness came back! Overall lots of snow, no one out and about and sun came out to play for the most part.
One of the best days skiing. Loads of sunshine and no slush in the afternoon which is what I expected. The strange thing was that before lunch I went down a few runs (wombat, family) and encountered patches of 'slow snow'. You know, the bits that put on the brakes. Going down the same spots after lunch and it had gone! And no queues whatsoever! The only thing I wondered was why they were running lifts on slowish when there was no wind?
Were they? Didn't really notice slow lifts from where I skied. Yes, that was the most unexpected thing all day.
So weird, we were out taking a walk and you could see it out over the Bluff, there was this awesome sunset rainbow over the Howqua Valley and then the snow just pushed across.
Just back from a great day at Buller It was like there were 3 distinct phases of snow conditions 1) from early morning till around 11 - nice fresh snow on a very firm base 2) 11 ish to around 2pm - getting wet as the temp rose and/or the sun getting onto it - made for sticky conditions at times with disconcerting changes in speed as you went from one area to another 3) after 2pm as the temp dropped/sun went away, more crunchy, less wet snow Also well done to the lifties onSummit chair for angling the entry queue onto flat terrain. Last weekend when I was there it was carnage in the queue as it had a downhill slope and plenty of punters couldn’t handle the slope, resulting in plenty of crashes in the queue
No queues where I went. All the silly folk went to the wombat chair whereas the best option was down to the federation chair. All the newbies went to the summit slide chair when us seasoned folk took the empty queue at boggy creek t-bar. Seasoned? The last time I was able to catch the boggy creek t-bar was over 30 years ago. It was just off that t-bar where I broke my leg in 1972. Aaaah memories...
However, Buller management of shuttles should be sacked. Our friends arrived around 9pm last night and had to wait an hour for the taxi. Their excuse was that they didnt expect so many people in September. And the village free shuttle...dont get me started. The culture is obviously profit before service cause they know we have no other choice.
Yep I only had ques twice, once because I had to go pick up a season pass and had to head down Bourke st, then again at wombat because I can in from Thulkes, but next loop around I came down Robins and it was cleared, mostly skied straight on all day.
Sadly its been raining here the last couple of hours :-( Very overcast. Wonder what that will do to the groomed runs?
I dunno, playing with Little Miss Fartypants and looking at the grey outside is working for me. I might go for a chookfoot in a bit.
What I would do to ski wet slush in the rain in April and May, you are right all skiing is good skiing. I saw lots of weird shit yesterday but the weirdest was a guy on Tele gear with a black crow camox freebird on the left foot and some type of twin tip older ski on the right foot but both the same bindings.
I was up Saturday as a friend talked me into a late day trip. I couldn't believe how great conditions were. It was very sunny when we parked and I worried about the warmth but it clouded over & the snow softened a little but not even close to slushy. As usual, avoided Bourke St and never more than a minute or two wait for any lift including Wombat, but my friend said there had been a few delays during the day on Wombat. No-one skiing Fanny's or Wombat bowl even though conditions ideal. All in all an incredible day for September 8th.
We didn’t last long today. Been back in Elwood on the couch with a beer for a while now. Still plenty of snow, but Nt side has only a warm day or 2 left
