sorry, are you saying that if they had "good" snow cams, it would encourage day trippers but they want overnight visitors? (clearly that aint working at Buller)

Or crap cams encourage day trippers (but they don't stay though)??

I'm struggling to comprehend either option o_O

I think he (assuming that is his real name) is saying the first. But it is interesting that this is his one and only post. Seems weird...

Team Bears say to have the train wreck you need to have a train first !
At least Thredbo have such a Train even if loco is small.....
But I don’t think we are contemplating a train wreck just yet...
Sure conditions have been less than ideal....but there is tonight...and every bodies hanging on a large dump... The seasons not done till the fat controller sings!

Mmmm... Is it going to be worth making a day trip to Buller tomorrow? Will we get enough snow today/tonight and whats the chance of windhold too? Hard to decide.

It’s pretty obvious that conditions are far from ideal at Bulla at the moment....
Without a large snowfall over the next week...there will indoubtably be a train wreck of a season for Mt Bulla!:emoji_fireworks::emoji_fire_engine:

It was set up and pointed toward the top of Blue Bullet I suspect to allow people to see the progress of new BB build.
However now that is done they may shift the view because any cam facing in that direction and exposed is going to get blasted with ice like the summit cam does.

The summit cam would be better facing in another direction because it is as equally useless during snow falls with winds.
Its a pity the cam at Koflers is not running anymore as that is more covered and provides as good a view of the summit and if it was running then the current summit cam could be pointed toward the Fed valley instead to reduce the chance of it getting iced up.

Finally Buller looks like a ski resort this morning. Snow on trees and snowing lightly.

The cams 'should' be a great asset to both the resort and the industry - there's few things that scream 'ski me' like a well positioned & maintained snow cam.

But for some reason (cost/disinterest/other?) the number and quality (exc. live and 360 deg) has dropped - ESP. Vic - not just Buller!)

As for Buller's 'Summit icicle cam' - it's wasted where it is. I'm sour staff know their mean winter wind/snowfall direction and in time, reposition so that viewers can actually see something. It really isn't /shouldn't be rocket science.

For summit, it may mean they need to mount a cam in the lee of the top liftee shelter and it's likely that location is problematic? So perhaps the future Grimus quad (soon?) could include a mounting position for 1-2 well positioned snow cams - placed to capture some of Buller's skiing??

Short of that, perhaps heat/demise a west facing window in the Holden chair top station and point a cam at the summit slopes? There has to be a way?

Report 2 - ice/snow making patches, 20min lift line, and wind blown whiteout. Shakey living up to Buller standards.

Pretty sure I've been told that the hardware of the Buller cams are capable of more, but the upload bandwidth available off the hill can't handle live streaming etc.

Looks like I might finally get my boots wet this week!
Time to see how much I've forgotten since Japan...

Hopefully they can get Howqua/Kofflers or Summit open by Friday.

The housings are heated however there is limits on how well it can deal with ice as it is designed to anti fog not melt ice.
Turning the heat up could result in damage to the lens as the heater is right under the lens at the front of the housing near the glass.
You can get housings with an external blower and heater but they would not last long up there and the external blower would probably get iced up.
In the past staff have used a hair dryer on a pole to clear the Bk St cam image but I cant see them doing that for the Bluff and Summit cams too although being the Summit cam is attached to the top station of Kofler T it would not be hard to leave a dryer on a pole up there for the operator to clear the cam on days it is iced up.

As for live view, a stationary cam with live view is of little use for the bandwidth it requires, the Dome cameras with Pan and Tilt are (I'm informed by Richard here) are even more prone to icing and fogging than the still cam housings.

Wombat run, Skyline were pretty good this afternoon. The rest a bit meh.

Guns were going strong at the bottom of Summit so next some more interesting terrain may open.

Wind hold. It was blowing a gale today and painful with the fine ice hitting you in the face on Mercedes.

They started up koflers t bar to make up for Wombat being closed, family run (to halfway) and the chute open. Bit icy with wind blown snow on top

Koflers t-bar opened today but the skiing there was meh. They were digging out Summit chair loading station so here's hoping.

    Currently showing hard, big flakes.

It's snowing heavily now. Not as dry as Saturday, but it's not anything close to sleet as of yet. Temps should be dropping overnight.

Quiet night skiing situation tonight, signalling the end of the school holidays and the mountain is quiet at last.

This is the semi whiteout view from koflers t bar of summit chair. A judiciously placed snow making machine combined with skidoo and a freshly cleaned window suggests summit is not far off
