Gee the Peninsula aint great for northern resorts Verm’. Maybe worth heading to Hotham via Omeo- less city congestion & stress? Better snow. But a bit longer drive. Nicer drivers?

Mt.Stirling 's snow cameras are still showing green season scenes. The Mt. Buller snow cams look GOOD, fresh snow cover!!

Buller is my home mountain, so i'll always be heading there. I do go to Hotham for BC via Omeo, but it's still 4.5ish hours, although a much nicer and easier drive.

Dont you start us on 'better snow'.

The Stirling cams are still showing a date from back in April, so no surprise there. Would be nice to see a current image tho!

An updated pic from the Bluff Spur Hut cam shows that at least two people ARE skiing it

EDIT: Changed pic so it's frozen in time rather than the live cam image

I think its just a matter of which resort will announce first they are opening early.

It will be Buller because they are close enough to Melbourne to attract SDS affected day trippers. That will get footage of lots of skiers on Bourke Street on the telly, which is free prime time advertising on all networks. Other resorts would only get a few locals.

I reckon early opening appeals more to ski resort marketing departments who are keen to boost bookings for the coming winter than it does to their accounting departments. So because of the spin doctors, Buller will open first, even if other resorts have more snow.

Buller has half a chance of selling enough tickets to cover the cost as well, it would probably cost Falls/Hotham money despite the PR free kick.

Buller/ Stirling resort/s can't open early just yet!. I have yet to do my supply drop at Mt. No. 3 Refuge Hut No. 3 and cut up a ship load of wood for the hut!

I think there is a good chance Wombat will be open for QBW.

Think you mighta missed your chance there pal.

Just FYI in future don't plan on being able to do anything in the mountains in May. It's why when we renovated our place last year we put an Easter deadline to finish it. Having a baby was also part of that!

the news tip is based on:
how much we have so far
how much it looks like we will get between now and Friday/Saturday
How much can be made in the same period
how long it takes to switch the machine (resort) on
    and history.

If we have a good ski-able base and it is looking that way, I'd say it's a sure bet, even if just Sat-Sun.

PS people will arrive even if the resort is not running lifts.

Jesus on a bike... Jane Bunn reckons Mt. Stirling will get up to half a metre of snow over the coming 10 days!. This Wed. is looking like enough will fall to set up a base for basic grooming on the XC ski trails on the upper mountain.

Don't particularly want to start a new thread just for a small question, but how busy is Buller normally for opening weekend? Is it as packed as a normal early August Saturday? And how much of the mountain do we think will be open?

I just said there was a good chance for Wombat for QBW. But that depends on lots of things going our way. We definitely have Bourke Street guaranteed for QBW though. You’d hope they could get Baldy/Skyline together too, hopefully more.

If there isn’t much open, it’s going to be busy on the (open) slopes.
If there is a fair bit open, it’s probably going to be less crowded than a typical August weekend, but it will still be fairly busy.
Worthy of note, Much of the hill is just up there for the party.

normally before the squads and teams are running, it's pretty good, not busy, so pre school holidays.
But depends to some degree on how much mountain is open as well.

Has the Village snow cam on the Chapel moved. It looks like it has been panned to the right. Does anyone know why?

You can now see more towards Black Mountain. The trees dont hide as much. Looks like the camera has physically moved towards The Avenue- Stirling rd

great initiative from Buller today re the new tyre inspection rule for picking up Village Access / Onsite permits. Multiple car dealerships in Melb where you can get your vehicle inspected. Sooo much better than having to stop at Mirimbah on the first trip up. Will be heading in to see @snowtyres first thing tomorrow morning

Re Village access tyres, either M+S, Snow tyres or All Terrain.

The Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management have arranged with the following businesses in Melbourne to check tyre compliance.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESSES

    Roof Carrier Systems, Melbourne
    Brighton BMW

    Mornington BMW
    Brighton Jaguar LandRover

    Brighton Jaguar Landrover
    Essendon VW

    Volvo Cars South Yarra
    Volvo Cars Doncaster

    Volvo Cars Camberwell

Alternatively tyre checks are still being conducted at Alpine Central, RMB Administration, Mt Buller during hours 10am - 3pm midweek and weekends.
