    Not good IMO

    Based on betting odds
We can only expect a maximum number of days of snows each year, or at least we know if isn't going to snow every day of the year even if we don't know how many there will be we at least know that..
We also know that on any one snowing day it wont snow more then a metre of snow in at least in one life time.

Based on that, best case even if we get the maximum number of days of snows each year and we can not expect anymore
Then any of those days that fall outside of the skiing season are potentially subtracted from our usable days of it snowing in a year, robbing us of potential snows days in winter.

This snow is all part of the 2019 season though, next year is a new year and odds are it won't snow until June, with a slight off chance of May :D

Dustings don't count....they're ground chilling events and aren't part of the annual snow days tally.

I normally welcome infrastructure work like this but I have slightly mixed feelings because this work has hastened the end of one of Buller's oldest lifts, Boggy Creek T-bar which was also one of the few surviving lifts built by McCallum, an Australian company that built a decent number of T-bars and chairlifts in the 1960s and 70s.

no wind here is keeping that near fire, (Rocky Nob, about 10km away) small, they have a
good number of aircraft on it.

As of today, the Stirling area is closed, this is for safety as the wind had gone
around to the north. Buller itself remains open. This includes Epic as it passes
    through the Stirling area.

Had a guy through here yesterday. He'd been planning to holiday in E Gippsland, but changed his plans to camp up near Eildon. He wanted a map of Stirling so he could visit Craigs Hut. I sold it to him, but warned him to check weather & fire conditions before he went.

it was changed to close all trails here in later message, the bike shop has just shut
also. For the most part, Buller is closed until further notice.

Glad we got off the mountain Tuesday. Hope its all for nothing but they do get to cut one or two 'fire breaks' in this time of danger...

What is Buller’s fire plan? Do they line up the snow machines along the ridge below the lodges and just blast them?

They did that in 2006, there's a great photo somewhere of the snow makers on Chamois blasting out water to stop the fires.

    from bullers fb

This update provides some local information regarding Mt Buller & Mt Stirling shared by Resort Management at 11am Sat 4 January. Please follow Vic Emergency to access rolling updates. Please note the resort is closed to visitors at this time and safety is the top priority.

There have been two fires burning south east of the resorts for several days. The closest one at Rocky Nob was declared contained last night, which was the greatest concern for the two resorts. The further one at Bluff Creek has not been contained and while unlikely, it could sweep over the ridge towards the resorts with the predicted wind change.

Water bombing recommenced for a couple of hours yesterday evening when the smoke cleared a little. A dozer line was put in to protect Bluff Hutt. The Police closed Mt Buller Road yesterday afternoon.

Buller Ski Lifts (BSL) has a team of 10 on mountain and has tested their generators and primed the snowguns so they can be activated if necessary. Two Water Operators are on mountain to deal with any water issues. The hydrants and Resort Management generators have been prepared.

The CFA has a team of 3 on-mountain, and some of the BSL staff are also CFA members. The resort management phone number has been redirected to a mobile and is being manned off-mountain for extended hours. There is a team member in the Control Centre at Mansfield.

A sweep was conducted at Mt Stirling this morning to check no-one remains there.

The attached pictures show a helicopter at work at 6pm last night, the village at 7:30 this morning and the view to the Bluff at 7:30 this morning.

The Mt Buller community thanks the small, dedicated team who remain and are preparing to protect the resort.

temperature down, humidity up, drizzle on and off is a nice change. The road
still remains closed to most at this stage. Exceptions for CFA and other fire
    fighting support crews.

Jokes aside we need to access the lodge this weekend to pick up ski gear for an overseas trip the following week. If it doesn’t open this weekend is there anyone senior we can speak to who might be able to accompany us to the lodge?

You might need to contact the RMB if the road closure is extended. But the current 7 day closing ends
on the 9th, 7 days from the 2nd. Residents are allowed to stay and protect, but if they leave they can't re
    enter either.

All those in the resort, have names and numbers recorded with the RMB/CFA/Ski Patrol so if there is
an escalation we can all be contacted. There are also regular meetings which detail the current situation.

Good to see the dam works continuing while everything else is getting shut down! Membrane coming along nicely

Time will tell how the Ski season will be affected but should be nice and full for the 2021 season!

Cheers MickM; yes I saw it last weekend. Was surprised just how big it - esp. so high up the hill.

Yes let’s hope it cuts the incidence of running out of water & maybe the rollout of snowmaking to new areas like Grimus etc...
