With a bit of work, you could probably get Koflers open based on that.

Wombat/LBS on the other hand, looks to be feeling the efforts of the snow makers.

Just need to get a groomer down there.

I would have tried to get it open tomorrow if I were them. Probably personnel issues.
It looks to be opening next Thurs/Fri/Sat from my perspective.

That is why Buller should be trying to open as much as possible next weekend. Sure skiing won’t be free, but the place will be filled with people.

Buller works best when people are moved away from Bourke Street/Baldy/LBS.

I can second that idea. We went up to the day car park, saw the queue to get the world's smallest bus up to the village, and promptly came back down... keep the powder dry for another day mate.

You couldn't get a better day to open the new lift. No wind, blue skies and mostly white, snap!

Fingers crossed the next few days build well on the base, which will guide what happens for
    opening weekend.

I know it's because of the groomers, but I far prefer the Euro approach where they tend to have the RFID scanners at the back of the queue & then skiers get themselves organised and get on the lift.

The gates are way back from the lift now with a large area in between them and
the lift, same for Merc, moved well back. So people stuck and the gate should not
    impact on loading anymore.

    Right...

    https://www.police.vic.gov.au/bulla-bound-speedsters?sfns=mo

Apart from the comment about spelling Buller "Bulla" - people going pretty quick there...

    "Saturday, 1 June 2019 19:36

Police from Mansfield Highway Patrol were left shaking their heads as five separate motorists lost their licences on their way to or from Mount Buller today.

Officers intercepted a BMW travelling on Mount Buller Road, Merrijig about 9.40am after it was detected travelling at 129km/h.

The male driver, a 19-year old Sandhurst man, received an on the spot fine for speeding and will lose his licence for three months.

Just over 10 minutes later police detected a Jeep travelling at 143km/h on the same stretch of road.

The 24-year-old Heidelberg West man at the wheel received an on the spot fine for speeding and will lose his licence for six months.

At 11.50am police detected a Volkswagen travelling at 136km/h, also in Merrijig but this time heading towards Melbourne.

A 27-year-old woman from Collingwood was fined on the spot for speeding and will lose her licence for six months.

About 12.20pm a Mount Buller bound Hyundai was detected travelling at 134km/h.

The male driver, a Hong Kong national driving on an international licence, was fined on the spot and is now unable to drive in Victoria for three months.

After a change of location, Highway Patrol officers detected a Toyota ute travelling at 144km/h, this time on the Midland Highway, Barjarg heading towards Mansfield about 2.20pm.

A 52-year-old Merrijig man was fined on the spot and will lose his licence for six months.

All of the above drivers were overtaking at the time they were detected speeding and assumed it was acceptable to speed when passing another vehicle.

About 20 minutes later a Silver ford station wagon with two people on board was detected on the same stretch of road travelling at 122km/h.

An attempt was made intercept the vehicle however it accelerated rapidly and sped off.

    Police did not pursue.

Not too bad. There was a little niggle but that is to be expected. Legs are a bit weak and I feel I don’t have a lot of power in them to turn. Ankle is pretty stiff as well and needs to strengthen up. It was ok, but I think I will struggle for a bit down anything steeper and in firmer snow.

pretty high speeds for overtaking, can only assume vehicles being overtaken were close to the speed limit or there was not much gap with oncoming traffic. Though the modern car gets up there pretty quick.

I am sure most people, including myself, go over the limit while overtaking. Timely reminder for the upcoming season.

I just hope police have the balls to book motorists doing way under the limit (60-70kmh, sightseers) which is just as bad IMO

Speeding to any degree on the Buller run is high risk stuff, safety issue aside.

I'll give it a brief nudge while overtaking on occasion, but always below the 'licence loss' trigger. I'll cop a few points/fine, but a licence is pretty handy to have and I can live without a court appearance thanks.

I don’t think that was centre to the point of the new lift being built. Certainly part of it, but not the most important factor.

It will probably help more when the season starts to open up the rest of the mountain.

Exactly. It was the fourth detachable grip chairlift built in the world. As such it was fairly experimental with lots of tech being tried out for the first time. Some years later when detachables became common, almost everything had been refined and improved or totally redesigned. So Blue Bullet 1 was an experiment, it was high maintenance and parts for it weren't available. When BB2 was demolished its parts could be used to keep BB1 going, but only for so long.

From a historic perspective, it was an interesting surviving relic. But from a mechanics perspective it must have become a nightmare. The capacity upgrade from a 4 seater to a 6-pack will certainly be useful to Buller, but that wasn't the main reason for building the new lift.

Reading between the lines that all of these were booked while overtaking, I wonder if the police were driving a vehicle strategically slowly to tempt people? Still not reason for the speeds shown here, but also unethical if it is the case

Hard to tell from yesterday as was the only lift running with so many people on one run.
Ask the same question in August.

As long as 6 are on each chair...not 3s and 4s.....can't see it not being beneficial

    Overtaking's done now.

I got 2 fines in a period from approx 6-8 years ago, both overtaking to/from Buller, I had only ever had one other fine way back when I was 18. One big one, 4 points and a month off. I never ever speed otherwise, especially through towns but my old car had plenty of poke and some big numbers could appear quick when overtaking and I found out the hard way that it's now fair game.

I'm gonna say from reading that report (between the lines) that most of those were probably overtaking down the hill from Buttercup Rd into Merrijig which is a massive no no for amyone who knows the Buller Rd.

Many years now probs 20 I was stuck in the Sunday evening conga line back to melbs. Nothing but tail lights kms after kms at about 80-90 per hour. Turns out some ******* doing 85 was stepping to 105 in the overtaking stretches and barely letting a couple past each time. When after about an hour of this it eventually came to my turn to 'go', apparently the radar read 130 .
I started explaining to the Sarge what had been happening and after a couple of seconds I realised how stoopid I was sounding

We ( family with 3 children) driving up to Mt Buller tomorow for 2 nights stay. First time n getting nervous. Never drive in snow before.
    1. How is road condition up to the mountain?
    2) Is it better for us to Park at the entry point n take the shuttle bus up?
    3) What to expect driving up the mountain)
    Apprecuate any feedbacks.
    Thank you

Over the years I found that overtaking a couple of cars here and there makes stuff all difference to the overall travel time. In the end you eventually get stuck somewhere and all that hard work and risk to overtake ain't worth it.

you should start a new thread for these questions.

If you have chains, and know how to fit them, you should be fine. There is
snow due over the next few days, so hard to know what the conditions will
    be.

To my knowledge, there isn't a shuttle bus up the mountain from the resort entry at the moment - this is only scheduled to be offered on weekends in peak season. You could look at the park and ride option from MMBL as an alternative.

Locals/Buller regulars know that Mansfield to Buller is the most heavily policed road in Vic...

However, luckily officer Leeroy was still munching donuts at about 8:15am... I did not see one police car on the way to Buller on Sat morning.

The lesson is for Buller day trips (as learnt by an earlier poster here) one must arrive early. At 8:45-9 there was only around one busload of queue at the day park.

I also bailed at about 2pm as I'd had enough of the lift queues... Also managed to avoid being pinged by the po po - let's just say that to get around a train of mongos doing 70-90 to Mansfield I easily exceeded the speeds described above...

Was a most enjoyable drive home, decided to go via Alexandra and the Black Spur home (yum).

Funnily enough when there's not much snow your good skis are fine as you're skiing on grassy summer groomed runs - it's when there's a medium amount that you hit rocks.

Depends if you are skiing just the open lifts or getting the skins out too.
