This is good news (natural & man made) after the recent dearth of whiteness.

Is the snow still falling this morning?
(It’s hard to tell from cams when it’s quite a light fall and falling on snow.)

So little moisture so far in Melbourne - not a good indicator for the Vic snowfalls when the system is so complex. Or for northerlies?

Interesting article on the AFR live blog.
One of the captions: 'Mount Buller ski lifts general manager is excited to open the season early, with free skiing for the first day of Winter'

    Am I missing something?

Am I too hopeful that more than Bourke st may open on Saturday?

As long as tomorrow's rain misses.

I think you'd have better luck selling jousting sticks or ergonomic chairs.

Yes the app needed a bit of love. Forgive any teething problems over the next week or so but it should be mostly up to scratch.

The serious snowmaking should be over the weekend itself.
So if anything opens, probably Sunday or Monday or Tuesday.

Snowmaking areas look a little lean. Is this due to weather conditions over the past few weeks, or COVID-related uncertainty with ski season planning?

Both, but Buller would have farmed the May snow and started making snow a lot earlier under normal circumstances.

Hell they would have absolutely opened for a week in early May, and with farming & the slushie machine perhaps opened for the weekends all through May

The sun I think. It was only 5-10cm of cover. I struggle to see anything more than the WROD until a few good nights of snowmaking.

some r*** but was warm on what was not a lot of mass, fresh fallen snow on no base. June
is always sketchy. There is a lot of water (extra 50Ml in the new dam) ready to convert into
snow at the first chance, soon

Potential for three big nights of snowmaking on Friday, Saturday, Sunday nights, after maybe a little snow/mix/rain on Thursday.

Let’s hope the moment the AWS sensors detect -2 C wet bulb they fire up?

I won’t be heading up but a lot of keen Schoolies will be eagerly awaiting the results of a few big nights.

Be curious to know as to what’s the approximate. % of automation on the mountain? Getting higher each year?

AFAIK all new fan guns have their own weather station, I think they have also added automation
to some of the old stuff. They still need people to check the guns are pointing the right way,
not iced up and otherwise working correctly. Buller could make a video(s) of a day in the life of
a snow maker, I'm sure it would get plenty of interest. Followed by many of the other tasks
    performed on the mountain.

Fascinating stuff for us snow AND weather geeks!

Is there a job of weather / climate consultant during the season, or does that default to manager of snowmaking?

Certainly need to have read a weather chart once or twice?

Good to hear of the automation - I reckon nothing is was more tragic in Oz than hearing that the guns sat unused overnight when temps dipped below -2 C for short spells. Hopefully that’s a thing of the past? Assuming it’s in the main May-Early Aug. SM period? Water available, etc...? ;)

Took the kids up for a few turns on the Bourke Street runway today. They had a blast. Well done Buller for making it happen.

That said, Saturday is going to be absolutely mental when all the kids squads start up.

I didn't get higher than heli flat, just watched daughter lapping on her snowboard. Hard to imagine baldy is more than a couple of cm deep though - unless they were using the guns last night. Bourke St had a few cm 'off piste' which is now rapidly melting.
