No snow, no skiing, so shall resort to being picky...

Dictionary says: Aside from being a town in India, the word "alot" does not exist.

Got the email for the QR system. Super easy, took 5 minutes and just needed names and numbers. Props to Buller for getting this together so quickly, will make so much easier.

It's open for TBR and MBRC to get up there for some kind of training, and staff movement, so why not let up people who already have tix on foot. Not selling sightseer tix though.

Important Notice regarding skiing, snowboarding and snowplay from Saturday 27 June

Due to very limited snow cover, skiing and snowboarding at Mt Buller is currently limited to Bourke Street. In accordance with the capacity constraints required within the Government’s Alpine Activities Guidelines for Coronavirus and the Mt Buller & Mt Stirling Integrated COVID Safe Plan, and in the interests of public safety, skiing and snowboarding will be restricted to Season Members and guests who have pre-purchased lift tickets until further notice. The sale of lift tickets has been suspended until conditions allow further terrain to open.

The ABOM Express chairlift will open on Saturday 27 June for access to the upper mountain for staff, Season Members and guests with lift tickets. This lift is open for foot passengers only, and not for skiing. No sightseeing lift tickets are available.

There is currently insufficient snow for tobogganing and snow play at Mt Buller and Mt Stirling. All available day visitor resort entry permits for Mt Buller have been sold, while a small number remain available at Mt Stirling. Entry to Mt Buller and Mt Stirling will be restricted to guests with a resort entry day permit, overnight permit, village permit or resort entry season pass.

We are monitoring the situation daily and look forward to some cold nights ahead for snowmaking, with the potential for decent snowfalls at the end of next week. We will open more terrain and lifts and make more lift tickets and resort entry permits available for sale as soon as it is safe to increase capacity.

The most comprehensive resource is bit.ly/buller2020faq which is updated regularly. If you haven’t done so we also recommend signing up to the snow reports via bit.ly/bullersignup

First time for the Standard snowguns!

Using it on Shakey, Burnt Hut and I can imagine Skyline and Baldy as well. In addition to an improved Bourke Street.

We are already seeing the full benefits of the new dam. In any other season, you’d never see snowmaking on burnt hut, summit or standard this early in the season!

Using snow making in these early parts is it purely to assist with ground cooling? Otherwise seems a lot of wasted energy that literally just melts away? I would have thought would be most effective after the first big dump of natural snow to help bed down the base.

I know it looks crazy but i also know that our resorts can get favoured runs in pretty good shape on snowmaking alone - and I'm glad that they do

There were a lot of doubters about the snowmaking on the sunny side of the mountain but it's since been well proven.

Same at falls. Snowmaking on wombats was a huge change. It's challenging to keep it all season but usually once it's open it stays open till the end.

Now if we could just get them to do it on international ...

Long ago there was snowmaking under eagle chair which have a nice alternative in a bad season

Got to say... well done today. Few hiccups here and there; some fun trying to work out QR code, people getting onto chairs, etc - but all staff were pleasant and had a smile.

There was enough snow for the kids to have some fun and kick the season off.

Went up for our first day of the season today! Had a chat to the staff at Mirimbah and apparently they cut off day resort entry passes at 113 cars for today. People were still showing up at Mirimbah without pre-booking, despite all the emails, web notices and electronic signs o_O Needless to say, they were sent away!

Horse Hill car park was the quietest I’ve ever seen when we arrived just after 9am. It looked like there were more staff than punters! Could see the snow guns still going strong on Shakey.

No problems with the car park bus. No standing passengers this year and hand sanitiser at the doors. Guest services was saying they’ll really be pushing Northside Express as soon as it opens.

The village looks good with the sealed area in front of Kooroora and the extra seating. It’s hard to believe it was the first weekend of the school holidays!! They have done well with the social distancing signs and floor markings everywhere.

They’ve done a great job with snowmaking on Bourke Street considering the circumstances. Lots of happy faces. Snow quality was as you’d expect with snowmaking, with it being pretty firm at the bottom of Bourke Street. Everyone doing a good job with social distancing from what I saw. The queue got a fair bit up the lower part of Bourke Street at one point. Lots of squad kids. Went for half a dozen runs then got over it. There was zero queue for the lift at around midday though. The last couple of runs I just skied straight on to the lift basically. Private lessons for beginners running on Bourke Street carpet. Overall, I think they were really sensible with resort numbers today. Oh and the slushie machines were going hard!

Went back to the car to drop off the gear and then back to the Village and up ABOM Express, which was sightseeing only. Walked up to the summit. Some training happening on areas that were set up next to the summit fence.

The dam is really impressive. One of the lifties was telling me “the boss” is stoked because it’s basically “unlimited snowmaking” as long as it’s cold enough!

Late lunch at ABOM. The pizza this year is fantastic. Coffee at Birdcage and was also great. Everywhere was doing an awesome job with the COVID set up. It was good to see staff really enforcing hand sanitiser use when going into the restaurants. They were also very thorough with cleaning everywhere. Hats off to them for embracing the new policies.

Really happy to be up there and able to ski, even with the various limiting factors!! It will be great when the season starter snow arrives!! I’ve attached some pictures for anyone’s interest.

Overheard a few of the staff saying that Standard is getting smashed with snowmaking tonight. Presumably it sticks better on Standard than on Shaky due to a lot of it being more shaded - except that one corner that always melts where it forks to Lydias of course.

Thanks Ju Le - a comprehensive report & photos.

I note the village square looking much tidier but desperately needs an infusion of new snowgums near the fire pit - they’ve lost so many in the last decade or two. (Any chance Dave?)

The dam is really impressive. But the hill is going to need infinite snowmaking if Huey stays on strike. At least there’s some cold nights this week!

No worries! I haven’t been at Buller for long enough to see changes with the snowgums, but it would definitely be great to have some more greenery around the village square. The seating area is great (also useful for this year in particular) and much better than the mud pit that was there last year! But it is very bare indeed! I think I was just amazed at how quiet it was for school holidays... those pictures of village square that I posted were at lunch time!

And yes, the cold nights will be great. I see they’ve already kicked things off for tonight!

Shhhhh. That's been our strategy for eons.
Top of it looked pretty well hit from IG this morning. No doubt they are certainly trying hard for it, harder than LBS, which is certainly interesting.

Far less snowmaking required to get it running - effectively the same amount of water as it needs just to get the links to and from LBS. Standard/Skyline and Shakey are now the next priorities after Bourke St and then LBS / Summit after that.

Currently having a picnic in the day car park. Thanks covid. Anyhow here's the aftermath of the snow making seen from our car park. Have to say it's a lot thinner further up near the top of BB1 but plenty of progress being made. Lots laid down around skyline too.

Not that I know of but it seems to be happening pretty quickly, that said the volumes at the top are greater so the rate that the depth increases will slow.

You can see the inflow on the bottom right of the cam pic.

Kooroora precinct looking great - it all makes sense with the stonework and residential levels sorted.

Square definitely needs moar gum and moar fairy lights though. Pls see any number of northern hemi resorts for inspiration.

Yeah when I left they were only beginning the stone facades and pulling down the scaffolding, could see it progressing but stil needed work, good to see it complete.

I’m not sure about the pinch point out the back where there isn’t any footpath on The Avenue. Taxis will definitely have to find it within themselves to follow the 20km/h winter speed limit around there.

Indeed. When I was up a few weeks back it did feel rather 'busy' as we drove through - and that was daylight with only a few workers idling about.

Taxis have been by far the main offenders.

I like the 20 limit for winter, I reckon it’s a great idea, that said I’m pretty law abiding with my village permit, just to and from the apartment, no extra curricular trips like many do.

    Got up to Buller mid-afternoon.
A last hour first ski for the season. As mentioned, Bourke Street is decent for the conditions that they have been given with no real natural snow. Skyline and Shakey are works in progress.

Stunning sunset tonight from the hill.
