Don't get me started on fairy lights! I reckon we've spent a bucket load of $$ trying to get a quality set of lights on our balcony to add something to the Square. We have had a few conversations with prominent BSL family members of our social group about getting all the trees wrapped in lights like they would do in Nth Hemi. Still seems to be a relatively simple project that needs more attention

I don’t mind a few fairy lights - sucks the tourists in. But I like the snowgums moar. They soften the brick and concrete. But they're gradually dieing out and not being replaced. It’s a shame as I feel the RM have done a lot of good stuff to lift the village in recent years.

Looking at Thredbo’s summer works, it’s not impossible to replace trees and shrubs - at least for a fairly small area. And well below the tree line too. Perhaps the RM could run garner views re this particular aspect when they next Survey visitors?

Absolutely. Surely a better use of funds than more statues. If they strategically lit a few key trees here and there around the village it would really transform the experience.

I'd gladly consult on any such project - Clark Griswold taught me everything I know about exterior illumination.

Been watching an instructor with a couple of (late teen/early twenties?) students on the Bourke Street streaming cam. Him trying to teach them to skate. He glides from where they are, off about 15m or so, then turns around to watch them "do the same". They dutifully WALK across to him. Turn around, repeat. Hilarious.

Some good whales building up on Shaky now

Family Run has a smattering of snowmaking

Skyline and the top of Standard look fairly well baked compared to elsewhere as well. Looks like they've given up on LBS for now to focus on other areas. Beautiful weather again. Fascinating hiking around the mountain without snow - although I'd rather it was waist deep!

Right from the bedroom window this morning, just too good.

Decent skiing surface on Bourke Street, feels a bit like Spring.

    Time to go walk about.

    Great photos Jellybean!

Sorry if this has ever been asked, but what dictates the placement of a fan gun vs the stick ones found on shaky and a large amount of the resort?

What Buller needs is a decent bar now the hoo hah is dead. Something like the old Buller Bar.

Walked into the Kooroora last year and walked out just as fast. Absolutely zero atmosphere.

I dont think it's dead honestly. The vibe is definitely different, but it felt the same by 3am as it always did. Miss the pool tables though.

It also has the capacity of a shipping container which is shite

I only went into the top bar not the downstairs (wasn't open). It was seriously stale.

Yeah fair, downstairs is very awkward until like 11. It's nice when upstairs stays open for a bit and you can go between the two though.

Cold, cloudy and windy up here right now. Staying inside for now.

Couldn't upload these yesterday, so here's some imagery from yesterday's walk in sunnier times.

Starting on Canyon Trail, with a little snow on it in the shade.

The Standard snowmaking effort (but don't try and walk on it )

A trip to a bit of Buller history.

Federation Bowl looking nice with the layer of frost.

Then climbed Lt Buller, views to the south from the top.

Some secret LBS snowmaking not seen on the cam, even more around the corner. Makes sense as this is a problem spot.

Wonder if anyone can guess where this is?

    The Summit:

As mentioned, Family Run and Summit Blue both with a bit of natural and some snowmaking snow as well.

The typical down the lift-line photo, with a Koflers that is set not to run this season given the treatment.

Then down the mountain we go, Baldy would certainly need some decent snow if it was to open.

Skyline looking pretty decent, the top is a bit more bare, but 20cm and a bit more snowmaking would definitely help to open.

It's four walls, alcohol and loud noises so the 18yo kiddies are set, but the old pub also attracted older generations for reasons of nostalgia and the relatively laid back 'pub' vibe. It fulfils a purpose, but they had an opportunity to create something with a killer 'ski town' vibe and sadly didn't.

    A solution does exist:

    LOL ROFL

And yes the 18yos who don’t know any different are fine in there, but there’s a whole other generation who see it as no more appealing than a concrete public toilet.

Speaking of surrounding yourself in wood, I’d love to clad our apartment ceiling with wood as per @luvthabumps place.

That said there is hope for the upstairs part, last year it was pretty raw so hopefully with another summer of refurbishment opportunities that can be the ‘pub’.

I still lament the old layout, ie you’re never going to get a live band in there, I’ve been to some pretty memorable shows over the years.

A couple of years back they had a great schedule of live acts, albeit midweek to pump the quieter/uni nights.

Solo acoustic stuff is fine for atmosphere, but it would be cool to have some legit 'shows' return to the Buller mix.

I missed the 80s heyday when pretty much every top Aussie band came to the Arlberg, but there were some legit shows in the late 90s / early 00s at the hoo ha that I just can’t see happening again.

    Very possible!!

But something tells me that we’re not seeing anything relative to the scale of Hunters & Collectors, Crowded House (who filmed a clip up there), Hoodoo Gurus, Midnight Oil, Cold Chisel etc.

Yeah should have transplanted the floors.
I feel like the plan was to have the same vibe upstairs and then funnel those so orientated downstairs. But as a few have mentioned, upstairs was disappointing last season. Who knows, could even be that half the place was a worksite. Now it's looking proper, might be a bit more of a ~vibe~

    *this season doesn't count

I wish. Only for the next two weeks.

Hit the sweet lunchtime quiet period, got some very decent skiing in, even though it's a little windy and mostly cloudy.

If you walked that yesterday morning I must have just missed you as we walked practically the same route. I was surprised how much vegetation there was on the upper part of zig zag, you never realise when it's under snow. And sheesh, Fed and Wombat bowls have some biiig boulders lying around!

Not that you want to in late June, bit it’s good to get around and see the place out of season, spending almost 2 months up there in summer with the eMTB as the ultimate mountain exploring tool was such a treat.

    Afternoon. Probabk
Hence why it takes so much snow to ski it.
They really need to do some pruning.
Honestly this doesn’t really seem much different than usual, maybe a little more snow for most seasons, but really just a tad sluggish of a start (and COVID messing up the snowmaking didn’t help).

And yes I envy the exploration capacity of the eMTB or any proper mountain bike really.

I must be the only one who loves downstairs. Seriously LOVE it. They've nailed a niche, haven't tried to be something for everyone, just honed in on PARTY and left the chilled out beers and social chit chat to other venues. But I seem to be in the minority on this forum. Maybe I'm out of touch (or maybe you lot are :D )

True that. I remember seeing Frenzal Rhomb at Hotham in the late 90s during the A Man’s Not A Camel era. That was about the ‘biggest’ band I’ve ever seen up in the mountains.

They should have saved the floorboards from the Kooroora and re used them. Would go a long way to adding some character. Next best thing would be to put some big rustic wooden tables in the rather than those cheap square things. And separate the areas a bit with some different treatments.

Bring back the concept of the members bar and have an area with some low couches. 200 identical chairs make an RSL work but don’t make a pub great.

re the comments above about the nightclub. It’s perfect for its target market. But separating the dance floor from the pub was a mistake because it contributed to a sense of vibrancy and made old people feel young again just to witness the debauchery meters away. Put a DJ upstairs on a little stage and let people let loose. Save the k hole for only the busiest nights and even then run both.

I’m not real in touch but other than flight facilities I feel like the snow is not so “cool” these days,
I’m not saying it’s not as popular or numbers are down but the mid 90’s seemed pretty wild.
Big bands and lots of events running regularly like the ch9 wild world of sports style stuff.
We have some huge names in the snow sports but not much happening to show it off.
